Literally no reason for side buttons. You have three available fingers when moving a mouse. This means you can operate three buttons without compromising movement.

Now holding a mouse with fingers isn't the same as moving it with fingers. Side buttons are good because you're not gonna press them while moving a mouse anyway.

The quality seems to be good but I just don't like the form factor, the scroll wheel is utter shit and the sniper button annoys me because I can feel it all the time touching my thumb.

Right index finger on left button, middle finger on right button, ring finger and pinky hold mouse from the right side.
Left hand either on left side on keyboard or in pants.
Side buttons help wonderfully with browsing the web, or when bound to undo redo improve productivity in some programs.
I wish I had mouse with programmable key under ring finger so I can use it and left side buttons as ctrl+tab / ctrl+shift+tab or something like that.

Compared to competitors (apart from MX mice) at the time, they were ergonomic, responsive and cheap.

Time have moved on since then (more buttons, better ergonomics, sensors and choice)

Still a good mouse (I still have a 2003 model 'in a drawer'), but prefer my G502 these days

Intellimouse almost made me a Quake pro, but i got sent to a tard home where i wasn't allowed a computer.
If you buy that mouse, you'll be the next cooller, also the usb connector will melt so buy a bunch of them.

Microsoft wasn't responsible for the mouse and keyboard design of years past, that was done by Kensington under contract. The original Intellimouse - and I do mean the original one from the 1990s with the ball in it, long before the first "laser" optical mouse was ever invented - was Kensington design, the original Intellitype keyboard with the split layout was Kensington design, and many many other devices including the Intellimouse Explorer (all 3 generations of it), the trackball Explorer and a whole bunch of other hardware too.

im honestly more concerned about what mouse feet theyll be using. the older ones were that great and always felt scratchy when moving it around on a mouse pad. it was a given that the mouse wheel was shit but everything else was great
