I started studying Computer Science. How do you guys manage your scripts, notes and so on. I'm not sure if I should get laptop for the programming classes and take notes on paper or if I should get something like a surface pro to do everything with it. What would you guys recommend?

Drop out and join a traveling circus.
Join your year's Facebook group. They might post better notes before finals week than you'll ever make.
Already did that.
Not compsci but I do a lot of scientific programming.
Had a Surface until recently, was great for maths and physics classes. Recently switched back to a regular laptop + paper notes.
I do comp notes just in a text editor, often will write little snippets of code as part of notes so it's helpful to be able to just C&P those into actual coding assignments. I use Dropbox to sync folders (Google Drive doesn't have Linux support which is my daily driver, but anything that syncs your folders via the cloud is nice).
Although I'm not sure how different comp sci is from scientific computing, I mostly do lots of scripting and data processing not consumer facing programming.
But Dropbox is super nice because you can navigate "the cloud" basically via a standard terminal.
depends entirely on how your lectures are structured and what works best for you.
paper notes work well for me. I spend most of the class listening anyway. What i love about CS is how everything is already online. Have my laptop in my bag just in case i need it. Obviously use the laptop during the labs.
Most of the people who bring comps to class just look at facebook the whole time anyway.
I make my own notes a week or two before the exam. Makes review less boring, and then I have a nice set of notes to study from. As I make the notes, I do practice problems for each section to make sure I understand everything. Then I usually make another set of condensed notes, cutting out anything I'm confident I know well. Then I can focus on just studying those essentials for the last few days.
Writing notes in class ended up being a waste. It made it harder to follow the lecture, and I'd never read them anyways because my handwriting is shit, and the notes are based off the prof's thinking, rather than my own.
T420 with Ubuntu
You don't need notes unless you're a brainlet. Just do a little extra work before your exams and you'll be golden
Write your notes by hand. In your freshman year you will most definitely not really need a laptop at all times, but will for homework and to work on your own projects. All in all, get a Thinkpad of some sort, install Arch Linux on it (anything less and you're a pleb) and you're all set.
Studying notes made by other people, the best way to fail...
I m also studying Computer science, I just buy a T440 in September, perfect. You don't need to get a super light laptop, prefer to have a good keyboard. I m sure you have a good Sup Forums backpack.
Try Zim Desktop Wiki, it's a perfect way to organize your notes and it's also open source
>Most of the people who bring comps to class just look at facebook the whole time anyway.
Please don't be one of these faggots. You are not only wasting your time, but you are also distracting everybody who sits behind you
>2017
>Still recommending Thinkpad and not Latitude/Precision
I would get it, worst come worst you can still use a notebook and it works as a laptop too
I study mechatronics engineering and having a pretty decent laptop is mandatory because portable computing power.
Taking notes in class is a meme. I just bring one a4-sized notepad with ringbraids to school in which i only write down random thoughts/remarks which pop up during class or random practice assignments.
I do make a shitton of notes while studying because it helps me to structure the new theory whilst also making sure I remember most of it. For this I use standard a4 notepads, I use one for every 'class' I have.
I also have a dedicated 'practice assignment' notepad for every class.
The digital stuff I manage by putting in a big folder named 'school' which has subfolders for each class and projects.
>dont type notes its bad mkay
>notes
Just look at previous years' tests and learn how to do all the problems. The stuff won't change year to year.
Man I done law school and ending engineering.
I mostly use a notebook to write content during classes as a menemonic tool. Writing down shit allow me to stamp thinking into memory, I can discard it afterwards.
You aren't allowed to take notes to exam so better make your mind ready.
>I started studying Computer Science
I am so sorry.
Notes on paper, lots of apps will transliterate them to text by taking a photo with your phone camera.
I like to take notes on paper, then write them up into a private wiki article. When I add them to the wiki I tidy up/expand on the notes I wrote by hand.
DELL SHILL GET OUT
They're both fine though if you wanted a new model the 2017 dells are probably better than the 2017 thinkpads.
You can still use Google Drive with the ocamlfuse thing some guy on GitHub did.
the only point to buying a thinkpad is buying an old model used
>scripts
Anything I use more than twice is in ~/bin with a mnemonic name.
>notes
I find that writing down quick pointers during class to material I should look over later is more useful than trying to transcribe lectures, so pen and paper for me there.
>so on
I'll admit up front that I'm an old curmudgeon, but don't worry about the mechanics of your note taking. Instead, worry about taking good notes. There is no substitute for reading ahead, listening in lecture, and asking intelligent questions, user.
...
When I was doing CS I took notes on paper, used the books out of the library and did my assignments on the lab computers.
I don't manage them because I delete them when I'm done.

>surface pro to do everything with it
I'd recommend getting a tablet, resist the urge to install games on it and mindlessly surf websites. Browse r/nosurf to get a handle on how to control your internet addiction. Spend time reading your books without your laptop right in front of you and remove all your distractions. Study hard and remember math is power.
Almost never took notes, but did it on a piece of paper when I needed to. Personally I learn the most through practice so I rarely even go back to read my notes.
My setup for high school:
>laptop for compsci classes
>code in private gh repo
>notes in simplenote.com (using vim plugin)
>ebooks/other files in mega.co.nz
>homework/assignments synced from google classroom to trello
>scripts in public gh for sharing
comfiest setup 10/10.
I use Microsoft OneNote at work quite handy for storing notes
how is this even a question
org-mode
buy a thinkpad and wait for other memed guys to notice you
also make a new user with a proper WM, don't leave your default tiling manager with anime girl as background or you are going to have a hard time explaining why you are using a laptop with loli as background during an exam
