one clean blow with a hammer on the platter

But there is another platter.

Bulk eraser. Basically a big electromagnet.

then strike twice

alternatively, rub a large magnet over it multiple times.

this

I recommend shaped charges. High explosive solves all of your problems.

Toss it out the window of a 2-3 story high building onto pavement. The impact will shatter the glass platters laptop HDDs use and render them worthless. Pass a strong magnet over it after the deed and there's no way in hell any data can be retrieved off of it.

Microwave

Sorry but it isn't working. Platters all the way down.

Drop it into an active volcano

cat /dev/magnet > /dev/sda

One does not simply...

you open it up and take the platter out and melt it down

then go outside and slame it on concrete

Pretty sure modern drives use aluminium.

What about water?

Why would you want to physically erase water?

Open it, apply the torch until they're red, sledgehammer it, put it in the microwave 10 min max power, strong magnet, then dive it in a bucket full of cement, wait it to get hard and drop it into the ocean.

big drill at the bearing

A typical magnet won't do shit

Take it to the scrap yard and pay the guy to lift your little hd using his bigass electro magnet and then have him dump it in the crusher.

Magnets.
Big ones.

isn't it called a degausser?

I tried this and now I have to repair the sidewalk according to my wife.

I tried this but all the platters got mad and spit hot molten metal at my eye. Posting from the ER.

Mail the drive to yourself by UPS, they'll figure out some way to break it

Physical destruction is harder than you think; platters are tough, and can survive a lot of trauma with some data still intact.

I'd suggest triggering the internal "secure erase" function, overwrite the drive, set it to "password protected" mode, overwrite again, and do a final "secure erase".

Then follow the instructions in the video.

why not pass the magnet BEFORE throwing it out the window?

Open the hard drive to expose the platters, plug it in, and while its spinning smash it with a hammer

sandpaper

...

a spinning disk is less likely to shatter than a non spinning one. thats why angle grinder disks dont usually break

Go back in time and encrypt the drive before you start using it.
Then you just destroy all copies of the key.
As a bonus, you're left with a working hard drive.

Yeah thats true, therefore when it does break its more catastrophic

Help me out friends is DBAN botnet? I tried using it once and I saw "DoD" all over the menus, turned that shit off immediately.

good point. post some of the gore later

the DoD parts refer to a specific method the US Department of Defense used to use to nuke their no-longer-needed hard disks and magnetic media prior to disposal.

Nowadays though they degauss the drive then physically destroy it.

Are you a government agent?
