>after years of suffering limited by that shit, finally can afford to upgrade to 32GB of RAM
>as soon as I hit 27GB of usage, Windows starts threatening ME and saying that RAM is low and programs start bugging out

WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS BULLSHIT, WHERE ARE THE 5GB OF REMAINING RAM AND WHY ISN'T WINDOWS USING THAT INSTEAD OF THREATENING ME????

idk shit about how windows calculates RAN usage bc i have nowhere near 32GB but like

if it's set at a percentage i can get why it'd be giving you alerts when only ~15% of your RAM is left available

It's not only the alerts, programs start shutting down after the warnings. What the fuck is the unused RAM doing?

Have you changed page file settings? If you don't have a page file set or if your page file is small Windows will start complaining at about 75% RAM usage.

Install Gentoo

>have 16GiB of RAM
>computer ran out of memory

can't wait until Sup Forums says 32GiB is too much memory

I did change it to use only 7GB of my SSD, with so much RAM installed shouldn't the pagefile be unnecessary?

>What the fuck is the unused RAM doing?
phoning home to billy g's botnet

Windows will just stick random shit in the page file if it's still relevant to running programs but is not being used. I had the same issue, I have 16GB of RAM and I had my page file limited to ~2GB. I kept getting warnings so I found an old 80GB 2.5" spinning disk and moved my page file to it, and stopped getting errors at 12GB RAM usage.

>I kept getting warnings so I found an old 80GB 2.5" spinning disk and moved my page file to it,

Wouldn't that affect performance?

>and stopped getting errors at 12GB RAM usage.

Were you able to max out 95% or more of RAM usage without getting warnings or worse, a BSOD?

I had it using 15.7GB at one point without any issues. Most of the stuff in the page file is stuff that either isn't used or is very rarely used and can be easily loaded into RAM if it is used.

Thanks user, looks like that was the issue.

What the fuck are you doing to use up 27 GiB of RAM, encoding video or something?

the os periodically shifts programs around in RAM because there is a type of malware attack that can inject a virus into a program if the attacker knows the exact positions of certain programs in RAM. Obviously, you cant switch the position of two programs in one step, you need to do a three point switch, which requires some dummy storage space (which is also the reason you need to leave some extra empty space on your SSD, or else the drive will use the same empty space too much, samaging the drive)

Some of us don't use a PC only to play shitty console game ports that use less than 4GB of RAM.

What game could possibly use more than 20 gig of RAM?? I have no idea how someones computer can need 20 GB of RAM unless it was rendering like an entire pixar movie or something

You're maxing out 32 GB RAM by playing gaymes? I assumed you were doing some CAD or something. Which game is it anyway? Not the previous guy but that doesn't really matter.

the only games that use more than 8GB ram are poorly coded ones with memory leaks

win10 is for fucking idiots

and so is upgrading ram beyond 8GB

Not gaming, but multitasking + editing/rendering = 32GB of RAM gone in a flash.

>and so is upgrading ram beyond 8GB

t. vidya gaming brainlet

Sounds like a memory leak. I have 32GB of RAM because I'm an artist and drawing on 6,000 by 6,000 canvas at 600 DPI really causes your computer to start chugging and I never have that problem. I get close but never that bad.
You're clearly doing something wrong.

Have you gone beyond 80% of RAM usage?

With two massive canvases open and references open in firefox with telegram and discord and steam open, yes.

Theres always spaces of memory not used by software retard
There needs to be empty slots between address spaces otherwise it would be more difficult for the system to allocate memory

>have 8gb
>never went over 4gb with tons of tabs in opera

how to you get to 27gb of ram used?

>I use my pc as a basically a smartphone I browse on
okay

>fell for the 128tb of ram is enough meme
>can't even process the output of multiple observatories while running every video game on steam and having the entire internet open in separate instances of internet explorer and rendering the captured footage of me doing all this at the same time

Yeah I've got 16GB and it's not quite enough for big lightmass builds. Thankfully it doesn't drop off too hard when it has to use the page file.

>All them tabs maaaaaan
>Muh Minecraft

maybe fap to 2d porn instead while rendering.

Arch GNU/Linux + i3wm + compton for aestethics

Never used more than 2GB in my lifetime.

>pic related
This is my RAM usage while seeding on qBitTorrent, reading an ebook with muPdf, editing files with Vim, shitposting and listening to music with qutebrowser

>This is my RAM usage while seeding on qBitTorrent, reading an ebook with muPdf, editing files with Vim, shitposting and listening to music with qutebrowser

So doing basic things that would take less than 2GB of RAM in ANY OS regardless.

sounds like you're mining crypto for the Chinese or Russian hackers

in theory it should, but in actuality windows uses the page file irrespective of the amount of ran you have installed, the recommended size for a page file is 1.5 times the size of installed RAM, in your case that would be 48GB.

Now wasting 50gigs on an SSD is pretty retarded, so you should try something like 10 - 20 and see if you have issues, if yes, allocate more by steps of 2.

On one laptop with 4GB of RAM I get issues unless I allocate the full 6GB it needs, whereas on my PC with 16GB I found the sweet spot to be at 10GB.

>So doing basic things that would take less than 2GB of RAM in ANY OS regardless

kek

>intelligent enough to close programs and tabs that I'm not using
>have 8GB ram
>never use more than 2GB except when gaming

>unproductive faggot that does basic unproductive faggot things doesn't needs too much RAM

Wow, shocker.

16GB is already too much memory
>GiB
I'm pretty sure nobody sells exactly 16GiB. You probably have only 15.4GiB

>Terminal graphics browser with TABS!
Whoa, where did you get THAT.

What the hell are you running that requires so much fucking RAM?

Running linpack!

speaking of RAM
>put single 8 GB stick in
>install ubuntu
>displays 7.3 in system monitor
did I fuck something up at some point??

Everybody sells exactly 16GiB, you fucking mongoloid. If your system tells you that you have 15.4GiB, it's because you're reserving some for your iGPU.

Literally Windows is dogshit. There are no other answer.

>iGPU use RAM as VRAM
never knew this but in hindsight its obvious
its not like the cpu includes a tiny RAM module soldered inside

No, you fucking idiot. Learn the difference between GB and GiB. RAM is sold in GBs, not GiBs.

How much the iGPU gets for itself is most often configurable in your BIOS.

Wrong, RAM is sold in GiB. HDDs and SSDs are sold in GB. When you buy 16 "GB" of RAM, you get 16384 "MB", not 16000.

faggot thinks hes productive cause he runs his computer at 100% by opening up as many useless programs as possible. you're the equivalent of the faggot that goes to starbucks and sits in the corner pretending to be working while looking at everyone from the corner of his eye seeing if anyone notices him being busy and productive. chug a molten americano and then fuck yourself with the milk frother on full steam

2GB is still enough.

You don't.

Most modern systems use 1.5GiB at idle.

Go write a shell script or something, people who actually use their computer are talking.

This is false, windows 10 uses like 300mb plus superfetch cache stuff based on how much ram do you have

>Xubuntu 16 uses 500MiB
Proven wrong.

Unless you want multitasking. Your web browser will use 2GB alone if you browse a lot. You definitely need 6GB if you don't want your PC to stutter and still have it useful.

>turn on my Mac
>5GB RAM usage idle
???

caching shit to run the comp faster, since you have nigger tier hardware

>fall for the 16GB of RAM le unused RAM is wasted le RAM XDDDD meme
>>after years of suffering limited by that shit, finally can afford to upgrade to 32GB of RAM
wait, this "fell for the 16gb of ram meme" Is people wishing they had more?
This entire time I thought it was a meme about people who thought they needed 16 gigs but only needed 4 and regretted wasting the money

ive personally had firefox take up 20gb of ram, though that was with literally hundreds of videos open

>faggot who only uses a powerful work tool like a computer only to play shitty video games projecting his insecurities

> shell script
> people who actually use their computer
...Are those who write scripts but not limited by them.

protip: Unused memory is wasted memory. If Windows isn't caching 10+ GB of your 16GB then you're fucking up.

This.

Big IF true.

qutebrowser

Also it's not a terminal browser srry. But it's pretty awesome, actively developed and pretty configurable. The main dev is a really nice guy and spends almost all of his time working on it. They recently moved over to WebEngine completely and away from the old insecure webkit.

I have 16GiB and could upgrade to 24GiB if i want to.
Same speed modules but 8/8 4/4.
Should i do it Sup Forums?

You shouldn't change from default behavior on pagefile. When you have more ram unused windows will cache resources into ram, ie, it will keep data as a cache until priority evicts it.
Windows keep a lot of different low priority shit on pagefile. As soon as you remove it will try to allocate everything on ram.

>Is rendering gay porn, while watching gay porn.
>Is surprised when he runs out of ram.

Nothing you do, in which, is """work""" related should be requiring more then 16 Gb of ram.
