When did this meme start? Obviously, you're not going to be using an older laptop for full video editing and 3D encoding (although I do some encoding on my Core2Duo laptop) but you can still do 99% of what needs to be done on a 5- to 10-year-old laptop.

If you get an old thinkpad the minimum you have to do is get a new battery because the one you get will be trashed and $25 Chinese batteries are shit so you have to hunt down an new OEM battery to even get advertised run time. Most people at this point would give up and just get a new laptop and not have to go trough that bullshit.
There cheap if your a broke college student but for someone who wants to work right away a new laptop makes more sense.

JS frameworks, HTML5, 5MB of JS+ads, garbage websites that take more processing power to open '10 things you wouldn't believe about Taylor Swift's wardrobe!' than it took to get to the fucking moon.

Using a E6400 Latitude from 2010 as my daily driver. C2D, 4 gigs of RAM and an old Intel SSD...Arch with i3 works like a breeze, if you don't play gaymes or need to do music/video production you'll be okay with these specs.
With a very light DE or a WM even 2GB and a Pentium M would be quite alright, I guess.

The sad truth about today's computers is that while we have incredible amounts of processor power, storage, and memory, we're doing basically what we were doing in the mid-1990s but in HD and burning a million cycles to do what used to take a dozen. This is the fault of the developers of course, but more importantly the normies who tolerate it.
My ancient X40 Thinkpad gets ten hours on a new chink battery, which cost only $25.
My T60, which is quite usable today if you're a normie web-surfing video-watching nigger tier computer user, still gets 6 hours on a charge.

There's no problem at all, unless you 1) open up a moderately large spreadsheet with formulas 2) open up a moderately large word document or pdf with lots of pictures and formatting 3) play any videos with modern encoding 4) don't mind carry around an extra pound or two 5) open JS heavy websites 6) don't mind only seeing half your documents at one time due to the shitty resolution

I've had all my laptops for about seven to eight years. My previous laptop I should have canned around year six or seven, but I was pretty lazy and didn't want to get Windows 8 or 10.
