Taking a Break From Video Games

Has anyone here successfully taken a long break from video games? What were your reasons? Did it do what you wanted it to do? Pic related, I am taking a break from video games to focus on recovering from an illness. Do you have the balls to give it a try?

I haven't played a new video game in years. Emulators and DOSBox is all I need now. Currently playing Tomba, it's some awesome shit.

Still on that break, 2 years and a half now. It's going alright, Well I was forced to take it but I was planning to do so anyway, univ hit hard which is far away from home and no stable net to play also PC died and was facing some issues with money. I had to save up money and gaming was then sacrificed also, i managed to enjoy programming more than gaming somehow kek it's going great

>What were your reasons?
i got busy and the new games were not fun to me

Not playing much, only Hearthstone. Not hard.

I took a break by taking a weird life choice where I had limited electricity.
I don't play as much as before but that is probably just because newer games don't feel as fun.
Maybe its part of growing up or they really have become shit. I emulate some older stuff now like I played some Tomba like a month ago.

Only exception is some competitive online games since they require more attention they are good for escapism.

This.

Only playing shit phone games now, because of the community (only place where I can effortlessly communicate with others in German)

started learning programming, games were simply not fun anymore.

i seriously don't know if newer games are shit or i'm just old (30)

>i seriously don't know if newer games are shit or i'm just old (30)

29 year old here. I can barely play games for 30 minutes now without getting bored, even with ones I used to love. Really upsets me and I have no idea why.

It's been like four years since I last played a videogame by myself. I just don't find them that entertaining nowadays. Every now and then a friend comes over and we pull out the Megadrive and play some sanic, but that's pretty much it. It's a shame considering I have a shitload of vidya hardware that I spent my teenage years collecting.

> I have no idea why.

wtf, i thought i was just old, but i'm not sure anymore

is abundance of games the problem? or they are just not fun? or maybe we have just seen too many games in our lives so everything looks like shit now

but i think the same about movies too

what the fuck is wrong with us?

newer games are getting worse while your standards are also getting higher
as a result most newer games seem like complete garbage

I've gotten busy as fuck so I rarely play video games anymore.

32 here
haven't really enjoyed a video game in probably 6 years
haven't bought a console since original xbox.

Play mostly cheap indie controller games on my HTPC now but even then it's only a few days before I'm completely bored. I can't justify paying more for anything else.

I did for 6 years starting from 2005-2011. Only got back to it recently due to my depression.

>what the fuck is wrong with us?
depression. a symptom is not enjoying things you used to love to do

I haven't played games for some months. (30yo)

I still desperately want to, I'm just depressed and tired and everything's a chore and none of the old friends I used to play with are online anymore.

i mostly play historical strategy games but ive gotten sick of them and not to many release
been shitposting and doing computer stuff the last couple months
normie MP shit never really cut it for me

>what the fuck is wrong with us?
I think a real problem is an overstimulated mind. Think about video games compared to browsing the net in regards to dopamine release. A video game only releases dopamine when you win or succeed, while the web releases it for every single reply, and (You). Novelty and success release that chemical, and what what has more novelty and more false success than the web?

I don't think it's that simple, not really. At least not so much that it's a one-stop explanation.

This is part of the explanation. Also we're busy. Also games are getting worse. It's all at the same time.

>I'm just depressed and tired and everything's a chore
Same.

>and none of the old friends I used to play with are online anymore.
Same.

Why is all of this so common?

>Has anyone here successfully taken a long break from video games?
i havent played what most would consider a normal video game for a good long while. only vns and eroge.

>Why is all of this so common
We're old and jaded. Chances are you're going to be annoyed by people who play video games rather than want to hang out with them.

i dont even like playing anymore i just do it out of boredom
i used to play csgo every day

nothing new with video games.

every since 2007, I took a giant break from gaming due to the following reasons in order:

1.) Consoles started to be the objective with creating games. PC ports were 2nd bastard children that made pc require rediculous hardware.

2.) STEAM started selling these ports for almost a steal becuase these games had ZERO fucking online community. Hence, any PC capcom game ever.

3.) Decided to focus on work instead.

4.) Built a new pc since 2011, and PC game is still the same garbage. Got a ps4 instead, and play 1 game only because it keeps me in touch with my friends back home. If it weren't for my friends, I would have never bought a ps4.

I am 35 years old.

got a girlfriend.

Moved in without a gaming computer.

All I have is a macbook.

She hates it when I don't pay attention to her.

My life is in shambles.

I haven't played video games in 3 months. All I had to do was sell my computer and replace it with a MacBook. Didn't miss winshit or my games.

My gaming PC burnt up when the PSU went bad and took the whole fucking thing with it.

I had a new replacement all in the shopping basket, then had a change of heart when I saw the price of it all.

So I instead paid about 1/3 of that to replace what I already had. Takes up about 1/3 of the space as that monster as well, and is totally silent.

Threw a KDE linux distro on it (I'm a baby duck about KDE), and have been more than happy. Didn't even download Steam in the end...

too many reasons

It's easy when video games aren't really good. I just don't find them engaging like I used to when I was younger. I don't like interacting with people in multiplayer, the writing for most games is embarrassing... why bother. Might as well jack off, get stoned, and watch TV if I really want to waste time.

that said, i'm enjoying divinity 2. i use a separate hard drive for windows. i think the thing that turns video games from a hobby into a pathology is competitive shit or mmos

Get a job
Ez

So you're the fucken asshole spamming the Austin and JaysTwoCents shit today. Go back to Sup Forums you fucken like fag.

What games you play senpai?

I'd play some games with Sup Forums to be quite honest.

Play nethack on alt.org with me

New games are getting too hard so I usually only play casual games now

Grew out of it. Realized 99% of all modern videogames are trash and don't actually make me happy, or improve my situation in life. I go back from time to time and do a playthrough of my favorite games, but the rest, especially online multiplayer games are poison.

I think the only things I've played in the last ten years are roguelikes and yuri VNs.

Send help.

I still play league occasionally because I enjoy the competitive aspect. But modern vidya is god awful.

Start playing IF.

I recommend the ones by Magnetic Scrolls, who are regarded as the British answer to Infocom. I like them more though as they don't have those bullshit "you're dead because you didn't do something 2 hours ago, time to restart you faggot" moments.

I have. Gamed 6+ hours a day from the time I was a kid until I was in my 20s, realized I wanted more out of life and other things took a higher priority. I still have some favs I play for short sessions and every now and then I get bit with a bug and I'll marathon a few games in a series. Truthfully, most modern games aren't all that inspiring and I believe once you get to a certain part of life, other things become more interesting. I'd rather read a non-fiction book, go out or do some project around the house than play video games for long sessions. I don't look down on people who game at all. I just say to keep in moderation. Those games that seem so interesting to you now won't be that interesting after some years and you will likely come to regret the time spent if you're not pushing other aspects of your life forward.

>Has anyone here successfully taken a long break from video games?
Yes, a 10 years break or so
>What were your reasons?
Family was going through a long and shitty financial situation, they couldn't buy me gaymes, and since i was too young i couldnt buy them myself
>Did it do what you wanted it to do?
I didn't ask for it, but im glad i was forced to.
I used to play gaymes for up to 12 hours/day, if it werent for it im sure id be one of those guys who have no life and spend all of their money on shitty games.
I got stuck at the PS2 generation and missed the PS3/360 entirely, and i dont really plan on buying a current gen console so id say im "cured".
The only game i need is AoE II, which i play casually (im currently playing an indie game tho, TWOM, i like it but other than that i dont really play games and i rarely spend over 2 hours/week on it)

I haven't played games since I was 14 or 15 because it became boring and tangibly pointless to me

young little retard here (14), I didn't play a single video game for half a year. It's not that long, I know, but it was enough to make me take up some more useful interests. The only thing I really play now is dwarf fortress, as the complexity makes it bullet proof from "fuck this game is boring as shit".

Underage Ban

Do people really play video games that much to the point where they need a break? I barely play a game like an hour every two weeks, on average.

The state of Sup Forums

Yes, because videogames have been shit for almost 11 years now. Every so often I try to play something new, it's dogshit. I wait a few months and try something old I've never played before. It's fantastic. Nothing has broken the cycle yet.

Mods do your fucken jobs! The 14 year old fag is probably the one posting Blacked photos with some weird guy and pol tier garbage today.

so this explains the influx of Windows shills. They're not shills, they're just Sup Forumsrefugees.

Took a break two years ago to focus on work related projects and self-study. Now I'm a Sys admin and pretty happy about it.

I sorta replaces gaming with home server labs and projects. I'll most likely start to play PSX and SNES games for fun.

MODS MODS MODS

university was enough for me

I m 23 and new games are boring as fuck ..
I also play a lot less now , like only in weekend if i have time. Before when i was in high school , everyday , never got bored .

Ehh install Drastic/PPSSPP for DS and PSP games, if singleplayer is your thing. ROMs are practically free.

While doing actual work to earn money I crushed my left middle finger in a piece of hydraulic equipment. As such I wasn't able to use it for a while. During that time I couldn't press W to walk in most games I played. Since Valve fucked up DotA2 last year, I barely played anything much anymore. Not being able to play was the final nail in the coffin. Sold my gayman P(OS)C. Miss the blue LEDs right now.

Haven't played video games in about 2 months, installed Linux, got a thinkpad and realized that I didn't even need my desktop. Got a ultrabase and now I have the best of both worlds while my desktop is sit in my closet.

Depression is a real concern, it could absolutely be other factors like interests and priorities changing though. I'd definitely say its worth taking an online risk assessment, or asking your doc about it if you don't live in burgerland though. Depression is some shit, treatment and therapy can make your life so much better if you do have it.

I used to play around 7/10 hours a day.
Was pretty much at fpl level at cs:go, I was honestly spending at least an hour and half a day on the aim training map and playing faceit/mms in the remaining hours.
Even won a few lan parties, shit was fun but one day I realised that it's pointless.
The hype for 'e-sports' will wore off, the friends will leave and shit will become mundane and dull.
The games are turning to shit, the constant rush for money presented by all companies is getting more and more obnoxious.
The best thing to do is to step back and rethink if you really need games in your life
Nowadays I spent my free time on linux and have so much fun programming I would never expect to.

Just let it go user

while hipsters have piled onto this hobby, I'd recommend board games. I play bg's a few times a week with the missus and because we both started at the same time (and generally only play with each other), we are pretty competitive. Beats trying to go back to an FPS where 16 year olds absolutely paste my 32 year old ass.

Got really into programming. Most new games suck

I've been off steam for 220 days, i didn't uninstall it though i just lost interest suddenly in playing video games. people actually think I'm dead since i haven't been on and left without saying anything. I still don't feel like playing games though idk y.

Currently on one. About 7 months, I think. Before that I had one for about 2 years. There's just no interesting games to play.

25

I'll binge play a GSG for a few days every other month but that's about it

only a small number of games are appealing to me anymore

play Sil

>28
most fun now is voip with friends. would only get into new games for the social aspect of it. got the best pc setup i ever had though..

even older games, eg. tf2, lost the appeal. maybe i should check out dm on cs1.6 again, see how that goes. could also spin up a fy_houses gungame server again with teams. good times with friends.

saw someone in bf4 recently that had 233 days played in that game alone. that was another point for me to reevaluate the whole situation.

>The games are turning to shit, the constant rush for money presented by all companies is getting more and more obnoxious.
also this.
>Nowadays I spent my free time on linux and have so much fun programming I would never expect to.
linux, yes. progamming, not really started yet. also sysadmin stuff.

fell for the gaymer meme and went out and build my own pc to try to achieve 60fps and from there kept on improving parts as they release every year

it was fun while i was being supported by my parents and the money was from them as well. now i am no longer in school so the fund stopped and i now no longer have the funds to spend on my hobby and from there i just stopped playing games, no new games are worth it anymore and my pc wont be able to handle them

i mostly play dota2 and ow and its the climb that is keeping me interested but you need good hardware to play that shit (totally placebo)

there is also a stupid ass noise coming from my AIO that i cannot fix and i dont want to RMA that shit yet cause i am moving to a smaller place cause no money for rent at this current place i have rn and i dont want them to send it to my old address if they agree to do that RMA

overall i'm just really tired with gaming now cause that is the only reason why i want / need the latest hardware just to get that extra 2 fps and i spent way too much than i'd care to admit

i recently won borderlands GOTY and that got me back into gaming but it only lasted for 30 hours before i call it quit due to boredom / stress from needing to find a job for rent

31 y/o reporting.

Used to play vidya A LOT. Still have a huge collection. Haven't touched a game in half a year. I feel.. evolved.

Now all I do is watch anime and porn

Nintendo makes good games. Pc games are cancer. I only use it to emulate wiiu games and gta v anymore

I'm 18 and I don't play much as kids my age. Just this summer I bought a ps3 and I rarely touch it now unless I'm really bored.

Went from vidya funz to real funz. There is no turning back.

You start out thinking "Oh, I'll just build a basic cheapo AR and do some occasional shooting". You will be very wrong in a very expensive way.

>just this summer i bought a ps3

37. Grew up in the golden age of Nintendo, SNES.

I just play a couple c and arpgs nowadays, like Path of Exile, or Divinity Original Sin 2. Maybe dust off an old favorite like Deus Ex. Otherwise my steam library just sits unused.

I went through my MMO phase and I just can't anymore. I'll get excited to try a new one, play for a week, then lose interest.

Is divinity original ain 2 worth trying? Looked boring but its rated so highly

I have schoolwork to do and none of the games released nowadays really interest me. Haven't played them much since I was a teenager.

It's buggy as hell but has a nice story and a ton of quests to keep you occupied. The combat system is also really fun to exploit. Hadn't played a game in a while and it managed to hook me in every weekend for a month.

If you like a slow-paced crpg that rewards exploration and interaction with npcs, along with some gnarly combat, it'll be up your alley. I had to slow myself down to enjoy it.

Not so much on purpose but I have gotten into hiking lately and spend most of my free time there instead of with vidyas

Ye fuck that

This
>try new game
>it shit, full of niggers and things I hate/don't care about

I pretty much quit cold turkey after the PS3-era. This gen just doesn't do it for me anymore.

My house was broken into one day and my PS3 was stolen. It took months for my parents to get a new one. I got really depressed and bored because I relied on my games so much, and we didn't really have internet, plus our only PC ran Windows Vista. Today, I could definitely take an extended break from playing video games, with no issue. Not sure if it's because I'm getting older or if new video games these days are trash. Either way I don't feel the same excitement as I used to. I definitely won't be buying a new console after this generation.

Get a few kids and a career and sadly you'll have no time to play games really.

I played latest hitman season (always been a fan) and fallout 4, but that's pretty much all gaming I've done in few years. Halloween sale is on and after being poor for a decade I have the money for games but not time to play them.

Life's full of other things, but gaming is mighty fine too

> Haven't touched a game in half a year. I feel.. evolved.
>Now all I do is watch anime

You mean degenerated

I play only homm3 and modded new vegas every now and then. Stopped serious gayming when got bored waiting for HL3

>taken a long break from video games?
lol
1 year break
yes, i'm watching anime.

once I started working, I stopped playing games.

I just got tired of gaymen. don't know why so many of you manbabbies can't.

unless you're in the industry. A friend of mine does sound for a lot of games and ends up playing a lot of games for inspiration and seeing what's out there.

PM'd you my steam id
:^)

I purposely left my Xbox with my buddy in LA because I was way too addicted to a certain game and it was really bad. (Staying up 3 - 4 days high on speed grinding and grinding in the game bad)

Quitting cold turkey ain't as bad as seems when your resource can't be available anymore and theres nothing you can do (except go back there, or buy a new one which is a waste)

When I go back for school I'll pick it up. But since I am not tempted by the new installment of the game series we used to play I won't have a single problem.

My PC is a workstation exclusively so no gaming on that either. No matter what.

The first 6 months are the hardest, the next year there was still some temptation to play games. Now I don't find any enjoyment from playing video games at all.

I went from playing 8 hours a day to not even caring. Granted, your perception of the world changes when you kick the habit.

I haven't played anything in the last 4 months, just haven't really felt like playing videogames.

Is that a penis print?

>Has anyone here successfully taken a long break from video games?
Yes
>What were your reasons?
I didn't like steam's TOS, and BIS (The company that made the Arma Series) moving everything to steam.
>Did it do what you wanted it to do?
I abandoned an account with 200 games including games that I really enjoyed playing, and I didn't really care that much.
>Pic related, I am taking a break from video games to focus on recovering from an illness.
Get well soon Op.
>Do you have the balls to give it a try?
Yes. without having an illness to force it.

I'm 8 and new games are boring desu, nowadays the only thing I play is super hexagon. Like 10 minutes/month.

32 yo here, I have a ps4, 360, and just built a decent rig with 6core chip and gtx1060. I used to be a hardcore gamer. Nowadays no games on my fone, maybe I'll install a Texas holdem game but in no hurry. Id rather work, then workout and go shooting/fishing/hunting, and/or camping on weekends. I play cities skylines on my PC a few times a month and that's it. Maybe it's all the country music I listen too but man it feels so much more rewarding to make money and enjoy life than fuck off in a virtual reality. Everything I do is for my daughter and my dad, maybe I'm an old fuck but I put myself last. When I retire I'll play Vida.... Maybe.

Life makes me take breaks. I still read a lot about games because the industry is interesting and I enjoy watching how cultures change. Basically grad school sucks all my time away. I enjoy being productive.

Wish I had the motivation to play video games... I've fallen back into wasting my days away on Sup Forums again.
