Why is this so fucking expensive?

Why is this so fucking expensive?

I mean... Sup Forums... just WHY?

display port to hdmi :^)

Because anyone that would need to use it can pay for it. Basically the reason anything costs what it does

Because HDMI and their licensed HDCP encryption bullshit.

There are cheap chink adaptors, but the HDCP is flaky on those.

Hijacking this thread to ask about USB3 hubs: if I get one (unpowered), will it be able to power an external drive?

There is a chip on the circuit board that splits the DP signal by multiplexing them.

That chip is really expensive.

As long as you don't plug anything else while the drive is connected

Thats not hdmi an even the cheap non-HDCP hdmi ones are overpriced because whoever has enough money to buy +4 lcds has enough money to pay for this.

>As long as you don't plug anything else while the drive is connected

So, say, an external HDD and charging/syncing an iPhone (what I want to do) won't work?

What is the maximum current USB3 (not 3.1) can pull?

Is not a bout how much it can pull but how much it can deliver (900 mA).

Although an SSD external may work.

I thought USB3 could deliver more.

Thats USB-C what you're thinking.

Fuck.

So pre-USB-c basically can't support any more than one device that draws power over a non-powered hub?

USB3 and USB-C are one and the same. Different connector, USB-C has the possibility to carry other signals also, like DP.

Depends what it is. If it's just splitting up the one image in to 4, it's expensive because you need a fair bit of very specialised hardware to do that, and the demand would be low. If it's just a displayport daisychain adapter... I have no idea.

Your phone will charge, it’ll just be slow

Probably not. The phone will likely just choose not to charge if it is receiving less than it is consuming.

Where's it going to get the power from? 500mA ain't going to just happen. The port won't supply more than that, most laptop ports don't even manage that.

>$80 is somehow considered "fucking expensive" for a device specifically designed to use four monitors
lmao how fucking poor are you. If you're not earning at least $80/hour then maybe you should evaluate where you've fucked up in life

The AMD Radeon HD5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition does not have this problem.

HDMI splitters are way cheaper and the good ones will strip the HDCP bullshit right off of them.

Do these splitters allow multihead setup or just mirrored display?
