It's unfair for the UK taxpayer but it is pushing more power in the direction of the British government. Just like NATO adds to the US power. When you're dependent on another country for defence, the opportunities to disagree with them become rarer.

The UK is, has, and will always be Irelands largest trade partner. It's beneficial to us both as both countries are huge holiday destinations also, not to mention the huge amount of Anglo Irish that exist. If anything, this agreement is mutually beneficial.

Did you people actually read the article? It talks a bout a bilateral agreement that also allows British fighters access to Irish airspace, which would be convenient for the RAF if it has to defend Northern Irelad anyway and likely doesn't increase operational costs, but can help mitigate them in the sense that the agreement can be used to obtain concessions from Dublin.

And this is just mind games anyway, it isn't like the Russians are going to bomb targets in Ireland...
