Pasta my ladies:
Discuss building, setting up your own homeserver and maintaining the services and demons on it.
>hostan. installan. rebootan. crying about uptime.
--> Quick Questions Quick Replies Why would I want a NAS/Homeserver?
If you ask why then you don't need it.
>I want a NAS/HTPC/Plex what should I get?
RPi3 or Odroid XU4/HC1.
>B-But muh ARM
Then check the onboard x86 like the J1900 or J3455 chipped ones.
>What's the best [software] for doing [ask]?
Specify you question and elaborate. If you want help put something from your side.

Tech illiterate here, how to connect to my home computer, from wifi uni, to bypass blocked sites.
currently, i'm using i2p, but i'm thinking in something like ssh/proxy if its make sense.
Great pasta.
set up a vpn server on your pc and connect your notebook through a vpn client to it.
basically all traffic between you and your home pc will most likely be encrypted and the uni will not know what it is. for the rest of the world you will appear as if you are actually going to the internet from your home.
the easiest solution is a vpn server on your pc and just leaving that running. its also the free option. or if you have a router running dd-wrt that will let you set up a vpn server on your router also for free which accomplishes the same thing but you wont have to turn on your pc obviously. its just the more advanced option.
theres also the option of buying vpn access but those all log your habbits. dont let anyone tell you that there is a vpn provider that does not keep logs and analyzes you.
pleb here
how the fuck do I set up dual NIC in ubuntu? As soon as I activate the second NIC I lose internet connectivity.
I have a pretty simple setup, router to switch which leads to my server and desktop.
I have an Odroid C2 with only USB 2.0 but can do h265 which I need for media center. Is really that performance hit if I use the USB 2.0 to connect to the drive with torrents if my internet connection sucks anyway? Is not like I can't do with the rest of my server needs in my 64 microSD and 64 eMMC.
what are some cool services I can host on my home linux server? something with dashboards, metrics. etc maybe a page to show the weather from various sources...pls help im just trying to practice
Thx
If you want something secretive, Shadowsocks is the way to go.
>tfw moving soon and will get more space
finally enough room to setup my filserver again
VPN?
just add up the streaming and network bandwidth usage and compare with the usb2.0 bandwidth limits?
Hello /hsg/
A friend asked me to put together a build for plex, however I have never used plex myself so I don't quite know what parts need more emphasis.
All I know is that it requires a larger harddrive, but I don't know if it requires a beefy cpu or a lot of ram.
Depends on if you need to transcode in terms of CPU
most likely since he'll be streaming to a lot of different devices, I've read everything from a raspberry pi to a big server to a nas as far as builds go, so I'm not sure what the main bottleneck would be when building something.
Is there any way to add H265 decoding to a Intel NUC who's graphics card doesn't support it?
Why are so many of the larger home server halls based on Dell?
Nothing wrong with Dell, im just interested in the reasons.
I mean why not HP Lenovo or Supermicro?
What do you want to do?
Do you want to increase your bandwidth or tunnel traffic trough the nics?
i would guess more available so cheaper for equivalent performance
Dell server chassis are generally pretty well thought out.
Less to do with that and more to do with corporate support they offer. That's why the likes of eBay is filled with them. From corporate upgrades, to corporate liquidation. Most of the servers you will find will be from companies that paid for a very expensive support contract for the machines that are being sold. Dell, HP, IBM, Lenovo.
Whiteboxes, not so much.
Currently down an SSD because the old piece of shit I was using died and I haven't bothered to replace it yet. Everything's ZFS though so it's whatever.
Moar bandwidth
Yeah having 12 or more TB is fine but remember this: The day you gotta restore all 12+ TB from backup will be the day you realize that GB Ethernet is your bottleneck. Daily incremental backups, meh, doesn't really push GB that much, trying to cram full on images though will. Yes, taking a week to restore it all (remember there's shit like overhead and compression factored in) is a small price to pay compared to restoring it all from source (DVD/CD/Torrent/etc) but still a week is a week. Time is money and all that shit.
I need to build a new router soon - my current one doesn't support AES-NI for PfSense 2.5.
Does anyone here use VyOS as a home router? From an initial overview it doesn't look sophisticated enough to replace PfSense.
>Is SMB multichannel worth it?
Are you limited by a single CPUs worth processing power? Then yes, otherwise no.
>Is it easy to setup?
Assuming its VMs on ESXi with VMXNET3 NICs
Set-NetAdapaterAdvancedProperty -DisplayName 'Receive Side Scaling' -DisplayValue 'Enabled'
no one cares about your shitty lists
or your shitty arm boards you poorfag
>basically all traffic between you and your home pc will most likely be encrypted and the uni will not know what it is
It will you retard, everthing does DPI nowadays. My FTD appliances have no problem detecting things like OpenVPN. And they will assume you're torrenting.
>i dont know how routing works
>or i dont know how to configure LACP
>i'm so retarded I cant even provide the request information for someone to help me
>but look at me, I run linux it must mean i know about computers
you are the cancer killing Sup Forums
>why not supermicro
Because it is shit people pulled out of the trash at work. OPs pic is of pure old as fuck trash 2950s and the like. Not a chassis they bought with the idea of upgrading it in the future.
>lenovo
literally no one uses them
>i dont understand what appliances are
>being surprised that consumergrade SSDs die
>Because it is shit people pulled out of the trash at work.
You're a fucking idiot.
...
I though IPFire was the go to for replacing pfsense in routers, not vyos.
posters like you are the absolute worst
please go away
>IPFire
I havent looked a lot at that. VyOS should in theory support the same general stuff, but with less features. I'll check out IPFIre.
This, the guy is probably bait.
nigger it is a shit ton of dell 2950s, some cisco 2950s and equally old routers. it is all trash
do you want to know how this is all trash? because he tons tons of it and it is all powered off.
you see those huge cisco 4006 switches? they went end of sale in 2004 and are only good as space heaters. even the 4500s which replaced them are almost end of life and no one is deploying new ones.
go through his flickr and fine me piece of equipment which is worth having
>i have stacks of shit too
no one cares about your raspi plex box or stacks of shit either
If you have one storage machine, why aren't you just restoring your backup to it over USB3 or SATA?
If you have multiple machines, where is the problem with that either? So it's a replicated or cloud storage setup, you attach / copy the backup and it's available on the first machine and already establishing parity quickly on the internal drive) while replicating over the network with spare BW ASAP - maybe this will take even more than a week if ALL the other drives from the pool aren't local, but it may not even matter if typical usage isn't really keeping 1GBE busy for most of the day.
>>i have stacks of shit too
imply harder faggot.
you're still cancer. fuck off and kill yourself. no one gives a shit about your opinions.
>i wish i could be one of the few fags on this shitty general who actually has real servers and can provide quality advice
you want to know how i'm the only person who should be in these threads? because i can answer questions like all of you retards are just larping that running plex on some arm board is a server
Good UPS' and good brands under 200-250$?
I was talking about your opinion on supermicro boards. Fucking moron.
>go through his flickr and fine me piece of equipment which is worth having
Lets see your setup then.
>I was talking about your opinion on supermicro boards
i didnt post one you retard.
a pair of dual xeon e5-2600 boxes with a catalyst 3750e which is actually powered on all the time. i've posted it countless times in these threads
HAHAHHAHAHA
People in glass houses.
plebian with a QNAP 451 for filesharing etc. Apparently supports VM's etc. but i wouldn't put the hardware up to it and the proprietary QNAP OS i find incredibly irritating to use. I also think the hardware RAID might be a disaster waiting to happen. I thought about building a dedicated tower or something out of a bunch of old parts i have sitting in the closet but slightly dubious that i lack the knowledge necessary to set it all up properly on the OS side of things as i've not had much linux experience. Is it worth the change?
>i didnt post one you retard.
Ugh. It's you. The insufferable know nothing know it all.
> Is it worth the change?
I can't entirely make out what "change" you want from what the QNAP offers.
Also, is that a model that actually does HW raid? Most QNAPs I've seen do linux mdadm RAID, 'cause it sucks less than hw raid in general.
>more implying
you're trying too hard, kid. go be autisticly retarded somewhere else. you havent even been close with any of your fallacies and mediocre insults.
This is HSG. Unless you're going to post actual pictures of your home setup, fuck off.
corporations rarely buy supermicro unless they happen to be appliances
>The insufferable know nothing know it all.
Funny because i was the only one in this thread who had any experience with things like RSS or SMB multichannel
I did you retard. you think bixnood.net is work?
Sorry I mean in terms of being able to set up extra services on it and fuck with the hardware a bit more without being stuck inside QNAP OS or whatever their own linux environment
>I did you retard. you think bixnood.net is work?
That's not a picture of your home server. It's a picture of your server management. Post your actual boxes, in the room they're in.
>corporations rarely buy supermicro unless they happen to be appliances
Which doesn't detract from the fact you said they were shit. You fucking moron.
happy you retard
I never said they were shit you retard. I own two. I said the stuff in OPs pic is shit people pulled out of the trash at work. l2reading comprehension.
i have been running 720p video on a T61 thinkpad with 2gb of ram. it's not too demanding so i would focus on power consumption more than CPU power
>happy you retard
No. Post the room.
>I never said they were shit you retard. I own two. I said the stuff in OPs pic is shit people pulled out of the trash at work. l2reading comprehension.
funny you say this when you imply the same, you retarded hypocrite, fuck out of here and kys
It's not too hard, but what about just doing another thing and using an additional Linux box (ODroid or some x86 or whatever you like) and experiment with that while you leave the QNAP machine alone for now (well, you can mount shares from it over SMB or NFS, I just mean you leave the storage on it for now)?
Oh hey look that faggot spic who uses cracked proprietary software he can't afford.
i was talking about dells in the very next sentence you retard, and in the sentence after that talked about how they were purchased without a care of being able to upgrade them in the future.
now stay mad that you have the reading comprehension skills of a nigger.
>i wish i had nice things
>the post
adding 4th esxi host today
Yo Jose still running NTP servers on VMs with virtualized software clocks?
> No dude I'm totally rich
> Cracked Vspehre
Keep telling yourself that dude.
>implying samefag
you implied i was using some kind of hardware just because i told you to gtfo cus you're a massive faggot.
the only mad person here is you, going around using fallacies and trying to insult people because you think saying one thing tells you everything about a person. and you talk about reading comprehension? lmao.
>still cant make an argument
>still this assblasted he has nigger tier reading comprehension skills
>still couldnt answer the first response in this thread
>still doesnt know what a crack is
>still doesnt even have the hardware to run it
>still only has a raspi with plex
Why haven't you managed to take any new pictures in two years?
>implying this hard
again, the only assblasted nigger here is you with your hypocritical implications.
and you're so far up your own ass you think this is actually an argument and cant see there's at least 3 people replying to you? pathetic.
keep regurgutating your inane bullshit, doesnt change the fact you're a fucking hypocritical faggot that got all defensive when called out.
Those G6 or G7? hex cores hopefully to make the power draw of those worth it?
> No dude I'm totally rich
> Muh cluster
> Potato quality picture of this motherboard proves it
Because he is on the run from ICE.
Anyone managed to build a recent version of Samba 4 with fruit vsf and the fullsync patch?
Because hardware doesnt change much. Removed 1 GPU and added an extra dual 10GbE NIC. And changed some 8GB DIMMs to 16GB DIMMs. Who the fuck cares.
>still cant make an argument
>still just autistically screaching
again, not a spic. i have a wall eagle
children pls
>Who the fuck cares.
It's obvious that you don't actually have a home server if you can't even take pictures of it.
I just took a picture of it. you can see the SC743 chassis and M28SACB behind the wall eagle.
>still thinks there's an argument
i called you retarded, you implied i used some hardware which im not, i called you hypocrit, you got all defensive, and now you keep running in circles like a fucking retard.
>autism
>reading comprehension
im gonna pull a meme reply here because it's obivously fitting for you, projecting much?
nigger please, no amount of damage control is going to make up for the fact you larp that your raspi is a server.
you're sad
> managed to build a recent version of Samba 4
Sure.
> fruit vsf
Apple can keep their OSX toys.
> fullsync
Seems horrid, why do you even want to patch samba for that? May I suggest syncthing or if it's a backup some duplicati frontend or borgbackup or such?
...
happy?
and no matter the amount you try to imply im using some hardware for some usage because i called you a retard will change the fact you're a massive retarded hypocritical faggot
Can't see shit nigger.
>tfw not enough money for an extremely overpowered setup with a 16 core Threadripper with 64+ GB of RAM and an 11GB GPU
Why live?
Time Machine.
...
go away you Sup Forumsirgin
stay mad that i actually have hardware and you have a raspi
why do you need so much power for a home server? I am struggling to max out my i5 with 16gb
I've seen that picture before. Lets say I believe that setup is yours its still miles cheaper than a proper VSphere license let me tell you.
Again, this is a two year old picture.
i.warosu.org
Stop posting old pictures and post something new.
>deflecting this hard and trying to change it to a e-penis competition
seems i hit a nerve there. projecting nigger.
>Time Machine.
Very shitty backup software tied into the crappy Apple / OSX software. Completely hate it.
I don't expect you to move away from OSX but perhaps try something less horrible like: borgbackup.readthedocs.io
>Lets say I believe that setup is yours its still miles cheaper than a proper VSphere license let me tell you.
Nigger, vSphere licenses are $200 for home use via VMUG. Pic related was over $6k of disks.
>still angry his epeen is so small
I didn't asked if you liked or not. I'll keep to the native backup method of the operating system.
ANother two year old image....
Nigger if you're so fucking smart you'd realise I just pulled this picture off google to start a /hsg/ thread. God forbid you could contain your endless bouts of autism fuelled rage but god dammit son get your shit together and shut the fuck up.
no shit. notice how it says bixnood.net and how all my other images say the same thing?
>that setup
>blurry picture
fucking moron
i believe that makes us four people calling that guy a faggot now. i guess we should stop feeding his autism now.
>says someone who's never heard of the phrase GPGPU in 2017
What the hell do you guys do at home to warrant these big power-suckers?
