Programmers without CS Degree?

Anyone here with a non-CS degree working as a programmer? And how's the compensation?

I've never gotten a call back, self-teaching was a mistake.
I'm highly considering going to get my degree, but I'm afraid I'm too old now.

Lol i don't feel bad for you...

I self taught myself wordpress, mysql, php, in that order. You have to show people what value you can offer them, show them websites, show them how you make money from them. Make your own business.

Currently I make 300/month from a website I made 6 months ago, I don't even touch it anymore. I build and manage backend websites for 2 companies right now, I'm working on a new business so I can travel and focus on that remotely.

A guy at my work is 30 and doesnt have a degree. He makes the same 82k salary that i do

>I self taught myself

* taught myself

Well good grammar doesn't pay the bills

I plan on getting my degree, just not in CS. It's going to take too long.

Depends.
Do you want to work for big names like Google, Nvidia, or Amazon?

You need CS, CompEng, or Math. They don't even give a shit about other engineering majors, or physics majors. They're not even allowed to apply, usually.

You just need to be of the correct ethnicity.
Degree is for losers in the current years.

Imagine being that guy not having to worry about paying student debt, teaching yourself does work out if you do it right then

Found a job a week after starting my search I still study cs on the side to get into more serious programming

>student debt

Imagine getting paid to get your MSc degree all finished at age 22 and with zero student debt.

Oh wait, I was. I'm not some Ameripoor.

Imagine having that MSc degree at 22 and being paid around 1/5th of what a degree-less "ameripoor" gets paid at the same age.

Where do I sign up?

I have no CS degree at all, getting 137k/year/NYC/5 years of exp doing SRE stuff.

Imagine me being able to move to the US with no hassle whatsoever, and suddenly being ahead every single American my age in your country.

Wow. Boggles the mind.

If that's the case then why haven't you moved?

Math degree. Self taught programmer mostly, with a few high school and uni courses. Took about 10 years until i got into professional work, and it's because i banded up with some guys i knew who successfully started their own company.

get a degree in software engineering if you're going to become a programmer. save yourself a lot of time and trouble.

>Anyone here with a non-CS degree working as a programmer?

here, small city in UK

>And how's the compensation?

shit, low £30k's
writing a little c# and a lot of typescript with react+redux+webpack+rx and all the rest

age doesnt even matter after 22, at that point you're too old for internships and everyone looks at you like an oldfag anyways

>And how's the compensation?

Not that good, but way still better than many jobs.

Applied Mathematics degree here. Getting 60k€/year

I don't have a degree.

I work on tech support but sometimes I get C++ or Python programming gigs for extra money. My clients have all been satisfied and they ask me to do more work for them but most of the time I refuse because I find it stressing.

I'm a self taught programmer that works as a full-stack java developer at big (not tech sector) corporation.

The key is to find a non-shitty recruiter and convince them that you know what you're doing. Then you've got someone who's economically incentivized and has the connections to get you interviews.

If you're any good the company where you're placed will try to convert you to full-time after a year or so.

High school dropout. Decided to finally accept a job offer, making okay money considering the city.

I have a bullshit Associates. I make 110k admining Linux servers and essentially make my own hours.

Two year math degree.
Two years of web development experience.
22 years old @ 60k.

Eh, for the location it's not bad. I still think I'm underpaid for the work I do, though.

i know javascript.

Once you're in, it's fairly easy to stay - provided you're not a retard.

Unfortunately, most people in tech are idiots who don't realize they're idiots.

i have a very good portfolio with some high quality largeish projects... but i never even started high school to begin with. i spent my time fucking around with code and graphics and shit instead.

turned 18 earlier this year, someone tell me: how completely and utterly fucked am i?

115k, 10 years experience

money is not technology

jobs in technology is technology

>webdev
>underpaid

Really? That's nothing, wtf are you even doing? Average salary for a programmer in Europe is easily 3.5k euros or more..

Yep. Doing C# .NET work for $100k/year with good health benefits and telecommuting days.

Took me a while to get this job though. I felt like I was banging my head against the wall trying to just get a fucking interview even though I had shareware, successful contract jobs, and FOSS contributions.

Environmental Sci degree
Self taught SQL/Java/Javascript/Bash
$100,000/yr
Last 9 yrs professionally
Currently writing code as well as:
Postgres DBA
Linux admin
Jenkins/Nexus/Sonarqube admin
Responsible for 1200+ production servers across US

40hrs a week in office
Going full remote soon

>Dropped out from college
>After that, 15 years of experience programming
>In the first 5 years I made less than a CS graduate
>Changed jobs regularly because I had access to higher pay jobs when as I got more experience
>Now I make more than a regular CS grad, I'm on the high tier of wages in my country

The only downside is that I can't apply to work visas in the US, Canada and other countries that require an academic degree. I'd like to leave my country but the chances are slim, the degree is necessary for visas and I'm not so young.
