Member when nVidia was worth a fuck on Linux? Shit, when was that? 2003? Seriously, how the fuck did this happen? From AMD no driver meme to AMD superior Linux support for actual computing.

Ayymd hard at work on that 1% market share.

amd open-sourced a big part of their drivers, making fglrx/catalyst (now amdgpu) not be a piece of trash, also mesa improved a lot. nvidia (proprietary at least) stayed pretty much the same, amd just improved their shit.

also this is compute, i think amd always was pretty strong there, just with raw throughput.

AMDGPU-PRO(proprietary) is just a older AMDGPU(open salsa) with full OpenCL support, which I don't even know why they keep since the RoCM stack is open as well

There are still some very old fashioned and stubborn companies that will never want to use open software, the proprietary drivers are for them.

drewdevault.com/2017/10/26/Fuck-you-nvidia.html
This explains a thing.

fucking hell he's mad

he's right though, especially on the bit
>I get really pissed off. It is not my fucking problem to support Nvidia, it’s Nvidia’s fucking problem to support me.
here.

Hardware manufacturers either don't bother making drivers at all or their drivers are half-assed proprietary garbage (if they were open at least the community could do something about it) and the blame is for some reason always put on the community instead of the people who actually made the piece of hardware that doesn't work.

When Nvidia releases a driver that crashes your Windows machine It's not Microsoft's fault - it's Nvidia's. Why then in case of GNU/Linux it's the other way around?

AMD is so desperate that they are working for freetards just to get some market share kek

This isn't about the hardware not working or Nvidia crashing your machine at all though.
It's Nvidia doing thier own thing, and him not wanting to do extra work for that. And while that is understandable, it still is his choice to not support them, and with that his problem.

I guess Intel and Apple are desperate too.

Keep swallowing that big green dick nvidiots.

RX 480 master race. Eat shit NVidia faggots.

Meanwhile my 1080ti scores 30420 under Windows. Top kek

>oh yes i do love some proprietary cock up my ass
gas yourself

my nigga. RX 480 8gb here

Checked phoronix, and it looks like nvidia drivers still have more wins.

Well duh. 2-3 years ago AMD's open source driver wasn't even 15% the performance, now they actually trade blows with Nvidia in plenty of shit, and what's even better than AMD is posting patches every kernel cycle at an accelerated rate.

Consider that most people don't have nor need GPUs, unlike Linux users, who usually need big specs. Check Steam stats as well. It's much more than 1% (or the actual 3% Linux PC market share).

>now they actually trade blows with Nvidia in plenty of shit
What. I guess some things it's kinda close, and lux render has a win for amd open source, but AMD still hasn't open sourced vulkan drivers yet, so nvidia still wins on vulkan. I'm not even talking shit, and it's cool that the open source drivers are good now (well they are way better than amds closed sourced), but come on man be realistic.
>AMD is posting patches
They should just leave it all to the open source community from now on to be honest.

>It's Nvidia doing thier own thing
In this case it's no different to making hardware not working or crashing.

The standards are here, Nvidia purposefuly chooses not follow them not because they are for a different standard but because of their malicious corporate agenda

phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=12-opencl-98&num=2

What are you talking about?
SF - flops on page 2- 1 tie, 2 nvidia wins
3nd page - 3 ties, 1 amd win, 1 nvidia win
4rd page - 3 amd wins
5th page - 3 amd wins
6th page - 1 amd win, 1 nvidia win

They're close as they can be, AMD's stack is also much younger, and has more room to grow as evidences how their performance keeps going up every kernel cycle

>They should just leave it all to the open source community from now on to be honest.
Whut? Most patches are from AMD employees themselves.

>Member when nVidia was worth a fuck on Linux?
no.

Missing software support never means that the hardware is not working. It's a software issue, not a hardware issue. The difference may not mean much to you, but it does mean a lot to the developer.

That's cool, no need to be a dick about it, though.

>drewdevault.com/2017/10/26/Fuck-you-nvidia.html
Sway. Why would I want to use this piece of shit?

>phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=12-opencl-98&num=2
Sorr misread the thread. I thought that it was about free drivers, and not amd proprietary drivers for linux. AMD did come up on those lately for certain workloads.
>phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=rx-vega-linux1&num=1

>>>phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=12-opencl-98&num=2
Read the comments, the dev said they're flushing out the proprietary drivers

>It is the ROCm driver with bits that are still proprietary. Eventually, it'll be flushed out and the AMDGPU Pro won't be tested as we'll have a working opencl stack w/o any need for amdgpu pro packages.

>Nobody cares about Linux
>Nobody cares about AMD
See they're perfect for each other.

>OpenCL
AMD has always been better at OpenCL.

Nvidia has neglegted its OpenCL due to them wanting to prop up the CUDA, a proprietary shit, support. The main reason is because it helps them and hurts their competitors, AMD (and Intel).

Oh cool they can do well on synthetic workloads.

Meanwhile the rest of the world doing deep learning is using shit like tensorflow and cuda.

>memeflow
hahahahaha
it's amazing how everytime you post you manage to JUST yourself
e v e r y t i m e

>tfw you got a thick veiny AMD package

Fucking Chad life.

the fuck? linux users usually have the shittiest hardware available.

>Nvidia doing thier own thing

what a strange way of spelling "fucking their own dumbass userbase"

I build mine with 1700X, RX480 8 GB, 500 GB M.2 SSD, 500 GB SATA3 SSD and the CPU is watercooled.

I, too, enjoy API violations.

>Nvidia, on the other hand, have been fucking assholes and have treated Linux like utter shit for our entire relationship.

Im dying pahahahahhaa

Nvidia treats everyone like shit - nobody works with them twice if they can help it.

Sorry but according to regular users like me Nvidia is superior in both Windows and Linux. Everytime i work with linux, it makes stuff easier when there is a Nvidia card. AMD drivers are shit whatever they do, you need to install shitload of stuff with no guarantee to break entire operating system. With nvidia you just install driver and "it werks", oh and open source drivers also shit but they advertise as "its perfect" there and there.

>tensorflow
Oh fuck off already. Also, Cuda is a dying platform, so double fuck off, you pole fuck.

>linux gpgpu usage
>1%
keep dreaming fucktard

...

It’s Lincucks 1% market share on the desktop you dumb LINTARD

...

Based on steam survey that doesn't seem to be the case
>12GB or more RAM:
W: 26.30% L: 34.70%
>6 or more cores:
W: 1.44% L: 9.76%
>6GB or more VRAM:
W: 6.96% L: 13.37%

>get AMD
>install xf86-video-amdgpu and mesa
>ready to go, no issues at all
>everything comes from official repos so updates are not a problem

>get Nvidia
>depending on distro you'll have to add a ppa or enable a special repository
>install latest nvidia driver
>reboot
>makes kde/qt crash, devs have to add a workaround for it even when it's the driver's fault
>desktop effects are laggy as fuck, another nvidia-exclusive problem
>doesn't support wayland, expects everyone to support their exclusive unicorn proprietary API instead of the open standard that everyone else is following
>xorg memory usage skyrockets from time to time with no reason at all

Yeah, so fucking superior.

GB or more VRAM:
>W: 6.96% L: 13.37%
>L: 13.37%
Windows forever rekt

You forgot a step
>shove your dick in the dvd drive and forcefully close it because making optimus work properly is literally aids

I like AMD but they are behind Nvidia, user.
Sorry.

On the bright side with ryzen and threadripper AMD may get some cash and start getting gud again so we go back to the early 2000s era.

this

>Member when nVidia was worth a fuck on Linux?
No. Not on android, nor on x86 PCs.

Oh, I just memberd that their driver support in my G3 with PCI graphics was shit as well. ATi fucked those cards green and blue.

I can't wait for Nvidia to go bankrupt, they built a new headquarter when they don't even cater consoles anymore. Top kek.

Think about it - even Sony of all companies ditched nVidia as soon as they possibly could.
FUCKING SONY.

What is the most GPU heavy video-game that can natively run on GNU/Linux?

Super Tux on 28k resolution.

Nvidia royally fucked sony with the RSX - there was a lot of bad blood over that. The AMD/Intel deal is basically because Intel doesn't want to deal with Nvidia. Nintendo (who have historically worked with ATi) will learn the hard way Nvidia fucks things up - I wouldn't be surprised if the switch was originally specced out for the higher performance tegras and Nvidia simply could not provide them.

With IBM out of the equation i'll bet it will be a looooong time before Nvidia gets another console contract. The world is turning and ironically its AMD and their focus on semi-custom that is letting them position themselves as the go-to source for x86 and/or gpu designs withotu having to deal with the shit Nvidia demand and the sort of scale Intel wants order wise. The next 3 years are going to be very, very interesting as we may see a lot of market upsets due to AMD being aggressive in a way they haven't for the last 5 years or so.

The newest Deus Ex or F1 2017 maybe?

>nobody works with them twice
Ahahahahaha
That's so fucking true.
Even their exclusive aibs, e.g. like bfg or evga, have either bankrupt or started rebranding chink shit to remain alive.
Last year intel had the gpu patents licensed from novidia.
They not only went with their long rival in cpus, AMD, but also they started buying their asics too.
I mean, how much fucking desperate they were to get out of another novidia agreement that they partnered with their no1 competitor.
Leatherjacketfag btfo.
Nobody's going to bother with novidiot memeflows or cuda, google already have their own platform and their s/w.
I believe intel will pursue the hsa/numa features on their fresh amd/intel platform.

>according to regular users like me
You spelled "novidiot" wrong

>Nvidia royally fucked sony with the RSX
That's a very, very mild way to say that.
Twice as ironic considering MS was enjoying the Xenos, the first GPU with unified shaders, ever.

Its a goddamn miracle what sony managed to get out of the ps3 from both a software and hardware perspective given 1) the RSX was a late addition and 2) Nvidia flat out lied and didn't deliver the hardware they promised.

Well, they had to offload everything possible to SPEs and then pray the GPU will do whatever it can.

I must be using the wrong search terms as i'm struggling to find any solid information about how Nvidia screwed sony - got any links?

Since this thread seems to have a lot of AMD experts can someone tell me please what options are a MUST for AMDGPU driver? I have currently enabled DRI 3 and TearFree ON.

Ayyy, you guys running ubertimings?

All the important options are enabled by default, so there's nothing to set up, really.
And if you want to play games then you better leave TearFree turned off - ironically it can cause tearing in games. It's better to do V-sync in compositor because that can be easily killed or redirected when you want to play a game.

link to survey?

>newest deus ex
i know it cuts to 2/3 of the windows fps but i dont think you can count being a shitty port as being "heavy"

3.7@1v
[x] doubt

I'd habeeb at idle with ludicrously aggressive LLC. On the crosshair hero for example my own 1700 (which is a so-so overclock) can idle at 3.9 at 1.1v but under load with LLC level 5 (most aggressive) it'll pull nearly 1.45v. Naturally that is retarded so i've got voltage set to 1.45v and LLC really low so i'm looking at 1.4v under load but still, anons screencap isn't beyond the realms of possibly but I do agree with doubting it.

>2/3
Maybe on nvidia. The tubetesters are showing 38fps for rx480 at 1080p/ultra, I just ran the same bench and am getting 34fps. Close enough I'd say and what is more important is when you tone down all the placebo settings it can get to a smooth 60+fps experience throughout most of the the game

GPGPU is taking off right now and many people want run linux on these machines

>GPGPU is taking off

Not if Intel has a say in the matter.

You're thinking of the people installing Linux on their thinkpads because Windoze would perform like ass on a core duo thinkpad.

why would a sane person buy a vega and use it in linux?
only a freetard is dumb enough to that

>GPGPU is taking off right now
Where? Meme learning?

I actually might switch to an AMD card. Wayland support on NVIDIA is horrendous, but I really like the development of Sway so far.

>meme learning
>not knowing there's billions of dollars being dumped into it

Get on the money train or continue shitposting, your choice

Oh boy another bubble.

>Cuda is a dying platform

lol

finally, i cant wait to get rid of this kernel poluting nvidia card

I never really understood this.
Nvidia was the worst to work with yet they delivered the best drivers for Linux? Is that about right?

>delivered the best drivers for Linux? Is that about right?
no, it is incorrect.

Nvidia's proprietary drivers in the past gave the best performance by far. However, I've heard that AMD's open source driver is very good nowadays. I haven't tried it, so I wouldn't know.

>not taking part on bubbles early on and dumping as soon as the benefits reach the mainstream market

The "benefits" of meme learning are already reaching your average consumer.
Now your car can crash itself and kill you while doing so!

self driving cars are already statistically safer than human drivers in their respective countries

The sample size for self-crashing shit is too small.

its still impressive for prototypes that have taken long, varied journeys.

As I said, the sample size is too low to judge that.

It’s linux, who gives a fuck if a video card works on it.

My own search keeps leading to claims from Charlie Demerjian, so the whole thing maybe some of his bullshit that Sup Forums has bought into.

If Charlie said it it must be true!

I was disappointed at first when they said they wanna focus on indie games but seeing how shit AAA games are these days I actually admire it now. I really hope Wine can start running DX11 games since that's all that matters now.

I can't get my Biostar X370 board past 2933 even on b-dies, but at least I can tighten the timings, so it balances out.

Yea nice support. No gaems on linux when nvidia just work.

nvidia has abandoned low margin markets. This is why AMD owns game consoles and whatever else they can claim.
