If I buy a current 4k tv 120hz, and an hdmi 2.1 cable, will that be all that I need to obtain pc gaming w/ 4k res with framerates higher than 60fps?

Enjoy your > 5 ms input lag

Yes, but make sure the tv isnt lying about 120hz like my samsung tv did. You also need to make sure it has hdmi 2.1 as well as your gpu

How great? Why?

No, TVs almost never accept refresh rates higher than 60Hz. The 120Hz is bullshit that is produced with frame interpolation internally by the TV's on-board processor.

It's not like a 120Hz or 144Hz monitor that is actually 144Hz and accepts a 144Hz input, it's a 60Hz TV that then takes that 60Hz signal and averages and blends frames to create new frames, which are then places between each of the 60 original frames its capable of receiving though its inputs.

Yea i read about that motion rate bs.
240 is actually 120hz on samsung tvs.
So the ports on the tv and gpu both need to be 2.1 in order to acheive > 60fps?

So you're saying it's possible that there are tvs that do legitimately obtain these rates?

And i thought higher hz tvs only did frame interpolation for content that has a certain fps limit like movies.
How can i tell what tvs have true higher hz input?

>So you're saying it's possible that there are tvs that do legitimately obtain these rates?
I'm saying you will not find any TV that actually accepts a 120Hz refresh rate. HDMI 2.0 isn't even capable of 4K at 120Hz anyway and I don't think any HDMI 2.1 TVs are actually on the market yet.

Even when they are, there is no guarantee that they'll support 4K at 120Hz even if it is technically supported by HDMI 2.1

>And i thought higher hz tvs only did frame interpolation for content that has a certain fps limit like movies.
They do frame interpolation on all content, they usually have different settings for different content but even at 60Hz they will do frame interpolation unless you disable the feature.
>How can i tell what tvs have true higher hz input?
It's easy. Can you buy the TV now? If yes, it does not support a true refresh rate higher than 60Hz.

MAYBE when HDMI 2.1 is supported by TVs in early 2018 there MIGHT be a 4K TV that will actually accept 120Hz, but there's no guarantee that TV makers will bother since none of the consoles will support it and current video cards including the 1080Ti only support HDMI 2.0.

Be careful not to get memed into buying a high refresh rate TV, like this user said "120hz" on TV's is 60hz input 60hz output (with frame blending to spoof a higher refresh rate).

I bought my TV thinking it would operate at 120hz, it operates at 60hz but adds frames to compensate.

>and I don't think any HDMI 2.1 TVs are actually on the market yet
They aren't, I've checked.

Well that's fucking balls

That's fucking nothing.

Yes both devices must support 2.1 and you need a 2.1 cable.

So what will happen when I attempt to game in 4k on my Samsung that claims 120? Gaming mode supposedly cuts down the lag from what other anons claim. Is the performance going to suffer drastically?

Gaming on a samsung tv is unplayable unless you enable gaming mode. 120hz is just the backlight its a lie. With gaming mode on its pretty good. I play my switch on it

No, but if you buy this you can zisworks.com/shop.html

Even when there are that doesn't mean TV makers will actually have to support the feature. Many HDMI features are optional, and because of this they don't get adopted. Deep Color was part of HDMI 1.3 but many TVs and devices never supported it, like Xbox One. Another HDMI feature Xbox skipped was CEC, despite it being part of HDMI since at least 2009.

Unfortunately the same will probably happen with variable refresh rates and 120Hz refresh rates on HDMI 2.1 TVs. HDMI will technically support the feature but it's up to LG, Samsung, etc to actually implement it.

I play my ps4 on gaming mode currently, works great. Was just curious if it would work half decent with the 4k build I'm planning for next year. Its 75 inches so I'd like to continue using it for casual sofa gaymen. More money to spend on things besides a monitor.

>If I buy a current 4k tv 120hz, and an hdmi 2.1 cable

even if those thing actually existed outside of engineering samples, no existing GPU supports HDMI 2.1 yet.

just pray that DP 1.3/1.4 gets more adoption in the display market.

>Enjoy your > 5 ms input lag
the fact that you think 5-10 ms input lag is even perceptible by virtually anybody is laughable.

Gotcha.
So if I buy a 4k tv, and use hdmi and downscale the resolution a little bit, will i get actual > 60fps gaming?

No. You're stuck at 60Hz max on virtually every TV ever manufactured. There might be some really odd niche set that offers it but it's not the industry standard and finding a set that actually supports more than 60Hz will be extremely difficult.

Well fuck me

on the flip side high refresh rate 4K monitors will probably be out in 2018.

Monitors or tvs?

HDMI 2.1 TVs aren't out yet, which is what is needed for 4k@120hz
Some current TVs will do 1080@120hz though, like the 2017 LG OLEDs

Monitors, not TVs. TV makers don't give a fuck about gaming generally and the kind of gaming they do care about is done on consoles, which will never go above 60Hz since games usually don't run anywhere close to 60fps.
