Hang on, can this be done without admin?
anyone have a test machine that can try it on? wondering if this is a way you can wipe a computer without admin.

Shame we can't get this to not show the popup and trick some folks into running it :)
Ok. so this wipes the PC, But it also has an admin retail demo account that comes with it. if this can be done without admin rights, it could be a way to get into the admin's files without having to remove the drive.
1, let it wipe the PC,
2. login as the demo admin with the password "trs10."
3. download and run Recuva on to get the data back.
Try it in a VM. This would be gold if it works.
>recover data after format and reinstall
it's a format, not a wipe. the files are still there somewhere.
Chances are it would just be a quick format. After all, they would just be expecting this to be done on fresh windows, with no real consideration for sensitive data. Recovery of data would then be trivial.
But this could be done off an on a Linux boot disk, but this has the advantage of just looking like windows doing something, and when you get back in you can pretend you are using the computer normally while your recovery tools run in the background
Installing a windows 10 dev environment now in Hyper-V. Going to play around with something here. I have an idea, Will let you know what it is and how it goes in a sec.

Nearly their guys. Not long now.
No, In the VM you are required to have admin to enable. when you click windows 5 times you will get a prompt to enter an admin password.
>use admin account to get admin privileges
After the first restart, however, you have unrestricted access to all other users and the system. With this retail mode being mostly an afterthought to most people that may be setting up group policies, if you have an Admin with restricted privileges, This could be a way for them to get full control of the system
Not very exciting, unfortunately, as you need to be an admin to do it. Unless you have admins that have a restricted admin account of some kind where the place they work has overlooked the retail mode in windows in the group policies.
Maybe if a standard user got access to retail mode somehow as well. but I cannot think of a situation where that would be required.
