Looking for a laptop that will last me at least 4 years and can get some decent gaming out of. Is the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 (1050ti) a good choice?

Why is gaming on laptops so important to people here.

Because I'm not going to shell out money for both a desktop and a laptop, and I didn't want a console this generation.

Get the Acer Predator Helios 300 instead.

I have the laptop in op and wish I knew about the Helios 300 before purchasing it.

Meh the Helios strix and 7000 are pretty much just down to preference.

clevo and their badge engineered variants like sager are pretty dank

pic related

Battery life is important to me and gaming, while somewhat important, is secondary to everyday use and work. I also don't want a laptop that screams "gamer."

Any laptopfags here have the Dell XPS 15 9560? Mine is stuttering like crazy whenever I scroll and lags when I type, among other things. I'm thinking about returning it if I can't fix it.

Why do you need a laptop for gaymen anyway?
Just build a desktop ffs. You can buy a cheap laptop then use the rest money to build a rig and it will still last more than a gaymen laptop.

Because some people have multiple homes but don't want to buy multiple gaymen PCs.

Thinkpad P51

I got one of those, came with significant screen damage near the canera, got it replaced TWICE, same issue, same place. It's probably a manufacturing error. I got a thinkpad p51 instead, its pretty good.

Eluktronics has some good ones for that, pretty good deals too, especially since you can buy them barebook and provide your own ram/drives/OS
If you alredy have 8 gb of ram and an SSD, and you are okay with linux, I'd go with that.

I'll replace my current Macbook in ~2 years, and my hope is that by then eGPUs (w/ TB4 or whatever) will be viable and reasonably affordable.

My first thought would be travel.
Anybody with multiple homes can afford two desktops, no?

>Acer
Nah, Dells are far better

Pre owned Dell precision M6700 or M6800, upgrade gpu, do your own research

Nope.

Not OP, but got the 7577 model (newer version of OP), and it hasn't shipped yet because of high purchase traffic and holidays. Did I make a good choice?

Try driver removal and reinstallation, rebooting after each install.
Try monitoring temps and HDD usage as well as page faults.
Try Googling the issue to see if it's common.
Try BIOS update.

My Alienware 13 R3 had some issues where it would drop to ~800MHz on all cores at random. It didn't coincide with thermal load or work load. It wasn't consistently occurring at a fixed rate.

I uninstalled all drivers.
Updated the BIOS.
Installed a driver, reboot, installed a driver, reboot until it was complete.
I now do not have the issue but apparently it's fairly common with the i7-6700K and the one I have, the 7700K.

Googling the issue gave me loads of advice telling me to update my graphics drivers and the BIOS as well. Unfortunately, I already did that, to no avail. My temps and disk usage have been normal. The weird thing about this issue is that it doesn't occur when I'm playing vidya; I get good framerates without lag. Either way, thanks for the advice.

I was experiencing the issue outside of gaming also. Perhaps try forcing use of the iGPU is you have a dGPU. Otherwise, uninstall the touchpad and keyboard drivers, reboot, then they should reinstall.

just buy a cheap second hand laptop on the side with the leftover money from the desktop you sperg. At least then you'll be able to gaym at a respectable quality.

>Perhaps try forcing use of the iGPU is you have a dGPU
Did that, and it became even slower. I don't think it's a problem with the touchpad/keyboard drivers. Resizing windows is extremely laggy, which shouldn't have anything to do with the touchpad or keyboard.

If you're on the move a lot for work it's expensive to lug around your computer. Not to mention unnecessary. Also just because you have two homes doesn't mean you should waste money on two computers. You don't get rich by spending all the money you have. You penny pinch.

Just buy a Costco laptop

4 years? College? Budget?

asus or MSI

or/g/ approved thinkpad running linux of your choice

anything else is stupid as fuck

been using laptops for 13+ years due to high travel relating to job for work and some gaming/heavy computing.

Also. Do not over spend on memes. Gaming laptops are a huge meme but they are well built and tend to have better cooling than a normal laptop, that is the strong ppint. Do not overpay trying to get max specs or something stupid like acer predator ect.

No, I'm just not making the kind of money I'd like right now yet I have an aging Dell Latitute E6420 that needs replacing (I've had it for almost 6 years).

Helios is much more expensive
Laptops cannot be so expensive afterall if you drop it you break it

>tfw no Kirkland Signature long life netbook

>1050ti
>4 years

No. Get the 1060 at the very least.

Holy fuck are you 10 years old? Get the fuck out of your.

I don't want to remove and carry a hard drive to be inserted un my other desktop every time i swich locations. Although if gaming laptops weren't a thing, i would resort to that because managing 2 PCs seperately is terrible.

This one is what I use. Wouldn't go with the dell, especially if you plan on doing VR.

Good taste. Despite the relatively lower teir graphics card, it runs better than specs said it would.

Im the guy who got TWO of that exact model and had to send them back because of screen damage in the same place on delivery.
Sorry senpai.
They will probably give you a refund but if i was you i would find something else before the sales end.

Duds happen. I don't expect a dud and don't plan to buy away to avoid the rare chance. That said I'm asking about the laptop itself generally under normal conditions assuming it isn't a factory fucked dud. And if I tried to refund it, sales would probably be over before I get my money back.

your only bet is a macbook, the chink laptops (windows ones) will last you for 2 and a half years.
not even a fanboi but it's the sad truth.

I got one of the Lenovo gaymen laptops three and a half years ago and it is still going strong. Works fine for gaming and for running simulations, so it is good for work and play on the go for me.

people are willing to compromise performance for portability because they move around a lot

>apple
>longevity

For me, gaming laptops are important because they provide both the mobility and performance. I rarely play video games, I just need my machine to be really fast. Some of them are super slim as well so that's an added bonus.

>plastic chink laptop
>longevity

you can get it real cheap refurbished from the dell outlet but how long a laptop lasts is a crapshoot

watch rossman's videos
every apple laptop ever made uses substandard components that are designed to fail so you have to pay for expensive 'repairs' (just swapping in a new board entirely) or just buying a new one

Is the 2015 Macbook Pro 15 still worth it? I don't really give a crap about what OS I use, but really want the large 15" 16:10 display.

every video rossman makes is literally him fixing a macbook which has had external damage (water damage etc.) and him whining that they won't give them access to their proprietary diagnostics tools.
oh and he's also a jew so be weary with his "wise words".

I own a laptop and a desktop that will outperform that thing, and combined they probably cost half as much as that.

Stop being dumb

>OP obviously doesn't/can't lug around a desktop everywhere
>"lol just get a shit laptop and a gaymen desktop like everybody else"
what don't you get about different use cases

Literally the only reason he cited for not owning both is money

Not everyone is a """"digital nomad"""" """"minimalist"""" like you, hobo

Asus shill here, I bought a refurbished G551JW that has been absolutely flawless. It's a little "video games" with red beveled edges and lighted keys but it's not overdone, obnoxious or cringeworthy, it's cooling solution is competent and it's very durable.

I participate in weekly simracing events on /o/ and sometimes I have to be out of town but still want to play. A gaming laptop is far easier to haul than my desktop, screens and peripherals.

If you don't care about using OSX (i.e. it isn't worth the premium), then get something much much cheaper.

1050ti is perfect if ur screen is 1080p...
Dude bro, honestly go to wallmart...
I got an hp omen 15 for $500....
i7-7700hq quad
1050ti
12gbddr4
1080p ips 15" screen
1tb hard drive, but i threw in a 512nvme ssd along with that....great fucking laptop

How about telling WHICH games you want to play in the first place?
And no, there is no futureproofing.

Haved used 7567 man, these are beast totally cool and the temp always under 60 degree C even when do hard loaded.

I think 7577 is more beautiful and looks professional.

To be honest only Dell seems to be decent in design. The Japanese totally love muh Dell aethestic laptops (7447, 7567), they started to complain that company always give them thinkpad which is slow as heck.

dont put it on your balls op not being that weird guy, but this goes for all of you putting a laptop on your lap and balls can cause urinary problems and fry your testicles causing you to be infertile.

wtf 500? it's more like 1200

Lying faggot

Can't they just sit when gaming?

With an external drive this is easily done. Sounds to me like you're just poor and making up excuses.

Get an Acer Aspire F 15. The specs are pretty good for the price and it's advertised as having a 12 hour battery life. However the way i'm using it it it last around 9. Also it doesn't have the shitty red and black "gamer" aesthetics.

About to get this myself for similar reasons, costs less than the Inspiron depending where you buy and to what config but would definitely last longer.

>inb4 britland
It's available in more generic form worldwide as the Quanta NL5A.

Have the same conondrum here.

I've been actually looking exclusively at two laptops. The acer aspire vx15 and the dell 7567.

Where i'm from, both have the same i7cpu, a 1050ti, the dell has a 256 ssd, and the vx15 has a 128 one, but with 1 tb hdd included.

Also, 16 gig of ram compared to inspirons 8 i think? It should have been a no brainer to grt the vx15, however, i really like the 7567's design and build quality over the vx15.

The real killer is dell always has to be more expensive. So if i buy the inspiron, i'll be paying 20 percent more for a better design, and a bit better build quality. Specs are basically the same.

Does anyone have both on hand or have had enough experience with them to finally make me decide?

Also, i just have to put it out here again. I really love the 7567's design, especially the red one.

NVIDIA disables fan control on m series flagship video cards in order to force you to buy a desktop card after the fact so no it's not good.

There's nothing more frustrating than having a good video card that casually overheats every time you use it because the fan control is force set by NVIDIA for laptops and control of said fans to make them operate at more than 40% is firmware disabled, so 10 minutes into your game you have to stop playing, and wait 20 minutes for it to cool off, and then you can play for ten more minutes again.

Why do you lie on the internet? Macs have good build quality, generally speaking.

Just get this, its cheap and will last you and place many games.

this might actually be better except the keyboard is bad and there are no fans.

Sup Forums would like either of these because they arent gaymen laptops

THe E 15 is better and has a larger HD.

buy an alienware or a rezer blade
because we are kids and want to play games in bed when mom tells its sleep time

You cannot use Occulus rift on it. PLEASE I BEG YOU GET THE DESKTOP. I got this and it fucking sucks.

The overall feel I get is that the laptop isn't very well supported by the manufacturer. 1/3 lid closes renders my screen with a weird mix of RGB lines.

bump

Yoga 720 15

If you're gonna go off and buttfuck yourself for an aspect ratio, I'd suggest the Surface Book 1 or the Surface Book 2. Both have a 3:2 aspect ratio.

The dell inspiron series is probably the only "gaming" laptops worth getting. The bang for your buck is incredible, they're easy to work on and upgrade and they're well built. Only drawback is the screens are mediocre, they're a little bit on the heavy side and they get kind of warm (although mine has never overheated)

Give examples of laptops with dGPUs but don't have any gamer branding. Dell XPS 15 and Acer Aspire are the only ones off the top of my head

Okay, I think I've decided to just go with the new Dell Inspiron gaming laptops with the 1060 for better future proofing. Although it comes with a smaller battery, the better card will only cost me $50 more and I'll be playing plugged in anyways. Smart move?

I have a job that requires quite a lot of travelling, it's not practical to bring a desktop no matter how much cheaper than a laptop it may be.

Any MacBook Pro in your budget range that supports current macOS is good.

Yes, and it has excellent battery life

but the Alienwares of this generation will last you longer

Just install the HD intel graphics and it will be gucci

but the Inspiron for this matter is a much better gaming machine because the Dell gets loud when gaming

I have two homes mate. Why do you insist people avoid the simple solution just because the next best solution is only a little harder?

hp literally gets low binned parts and components that will fail earlier, at least applel isn't doing this.

I would hate macbooks too if retarded hipsters brought their broken ones to me all day and tried to haggle me on a repair estimate.

I just bought that laptop, OP at Best Buy for $700. Seems to be ok although my touchpad is wobbly so I'm gonna see if I can get it fixed.

I purchased one a while back with the i5-7300HQ. I get 9 hours life out of it in linux or windows. It's hefty but it's a god damn beast. The precision touchpad is phenomenal, rivals my MBP. I bought it over a new MBP as well.

CHINKSHIT

stop buying that shit, the Dell has an actual trackpad and battery life

This is why I recommend it

the only gaming laptop with a decent trackpad other than alienware obviously

computer technology changes sufficiently that buying something today based on what you think your future needs is unnecessarily costly

buy what you need now

upgrade when you need something better, or your employer gives you something better

look at some laptop reviews from four or five years ago, then ask yourself if you would be happy with those machines today

for example, if 5G high-speed wireless internet is deployed, wouldn't you want a laptop with a built-in 5G modem instead of carrying around some kind of dongle that you have to plug into your older laptop

and maybe there will be some advances in battery charging technology, you get 5 days of power with just 5 minutes of charging. you'll need a newer laptop to use them.

You can't upgrade a 2007 iPhone to a 2017 iPhone X, or put a more powerful 2017 Prius Prime battery in a 2001 Prius Classic.

also... f--k a job that makes you buy your own computer. Get a Thinkpad X Carbon with a same-day repair corporate service contract bill it to the company.

I returned my first one due to this. Second one was much tighter, it's an issue that also affects the xps line. You can also try getting it revved up by running the piss out of the nvidia and pushing down below the touchpad as it throttled down and cools.

Yes.
It’s still a gaming laptop, so don’t expect good quality at all, but it’s as good as it gets.
Expect it to last about 3 years.

The build quality on mine has been really solid beyond the first one with the slightly loose touchpad. Fan only ever came on during gaming which I really don't even do. Bought it for development.

>my gaming laptop has never overheated.
What video card does it have? Unless you're playing tetris if it's an NVIDIA card I don't believe you.

They're often the only ones with actual dgpus for a reasonable price which makes working with CAD and/or 3d engines much easier.

making it out of aluminum doesn't help when you're using shit chink compontents that burn out

maybe relatively speaking since most laptops are built like shit, but the internals of 2010-2014 macbooks were literally taped inside and the hard drive held in by 2 pieces of rubber that just compressed it. it was a horrible design.

nowadays since everything is soldered its literally just one piece so its hard to even judge it
