ITT: The War between Mac vs. Windows (Not PC. PC means personal computer, so therefore a Mac + a Windows) Actual Discussion Edition
I come to you with the thought that there is inherently no difference except for fundamental changes in philosophy.

I introduce you the pros and cons I have experienced of both Mac and Windows:

Mac Pros:
>Very nice aesthetic
>Unix-based operating system, more stable
>Licensing often very nice and don't have to deal with license keys
>Better retina screens on laptops
>Harder to get viruses on it. Due to inherent nature of Unix.

Mac Cons:
>Abysmal 'cloud backup'. Almost completely unstable
>Forced gateway through software channels (IE iTunes)
>Inability to upgrade basic hardware on laptops & newer desktops (such as RAM, HDD on newer Macs)
>Inability to modify or mess with the operating system even though it is Unix based
>Kinda makes you inherently a douche with your superiority complex.

Windows Pros:
>Ability to mess around with the system both hardware and software.
>Can load just about any program on it with no compatibility issues
>Stronger hardware for less money
>Better for gaming
>Most amount of support and ease of use. Due to owning majority market.

Windows Cons:
>Abysmal licensing policy. Hard drive dead? Well good bye Office unless you bought 365 and you didn't save your license key. (Often license keys are OEM meaning they can be installed once and only once)
>Buggy operating system. Ignored several years of development from Unix to make their own software.
>Easy to break system with system changes
>GUI File Explorer tries to blur the line between easy to understand directories in place of BS shortcut 'quick-menu' icons in Explorer, making it inherently difficult to understand where files go for a beginner user.
>Windows 10 blatantly data mines your computer to serve you invasive targeted ads

There is no war between MAC and Windows.
There's a war between GNU/Linux and Windows.
And then there are some faggots on a MAC.

Mac is better

>Mac Cons:
>>Abysmal 'cloud backup'. Almost completely unstable
You don't have to use it. There's also time machine and rsync built-in, plus lots of third party utilities.
>>Forced gateway through software channels (IE iTunes)
What is a forced gateway? Certainly not a network gateway. And there are no restrictions on software installation or music purchases either.
>>Inability to upgrade basic hardware on laptops & newer desktops (such as RAM, HDD on newer Macs)
True, but most people don't upgrade laptops anyway.
>>Inability to modify or mess with the operating system even though it is Unix based
False. All the BSD stuff is still there. You have more low-level control on Mac than you do on Windows, but it's not GUI-based and you have to actually know what you're doing.
>>Kinda makes you inherently a douche with your superiority complex.
That tends to happen when winfags are constantly spouting off about how terrible mac is without actually knowing anything about it.

There's only really one major con about mac, and you left it off: Apple has gradually become more and more of a fashion accessory company and is ignoring the higher-end/professional market segment.

Who cares? If you use either you need to take a shower, hit the weights, and install gentoo.

Since when do gentoo users shower?

>>Harder to get viruses on it. Due to inherent nature of Unix.
Uhh, not exactly true. It's harder to get viruses simply because the market share of OSX is way lower than that of windows, that is why almost all the viruses are written for windows. Pure vulnerabilities count on say hackathons is no different from that of any *nix OS for windows

Have sex.

>dont use icloud
>dont use itunes
>why upgrade components
>you can actually do pretty much anything, even run x with le riced apps
>tfw mac superior

The way that it handles programs is using an encapsulation. Mounting a program and it acts as a drive is a powerful attempt at maintaining program/OS separation. Same thing when you install that program there is a separation that occurs. Though you are right about market share, the security features of Unix vastly outperform Windows comparisons UAC

>>Inability to modify or mess with the operating system even though it is Unix based
That's objectively wrong. Command line tools are widely available, and while it differs a bit from Loonix, it's nothing you can't figure out.

Developing kernel mods is also quite easy, the XCode environment is tailored for people who want to get shit done.

One example I can give while there does exist 'ability' it isn't exactly easy by design.

Example: Modifying the hosts file in a windows is leagues easier than terminal command lines in Mac. Though to be honest this is by design. It shouldn't be easy to modify the hosts file. This is due to a fundamental difference in philosophy over Mac + Windows

>Why upgrade components
Sup Forums wants the ability to modify their operating system to the point of using linux but upgrading components?? that's just too much.

you're not modifying the cpu anyway.
ram & ssd are more than enough in the standard configuration

Windows
- Compatible with almost every software and game you can get for today computers.
- You can install it on ANY HARDWARE, so you decide what windows computer you have, not to mention you can get windows machine cheaper and more powerful than mac machine.

Mac
- Low compatibality makes it os for same stuff what totally Free linux does (Well, linux can also be a server OS while MAC cant, so even linux can more than mac).
- You cant use it your custom machine, you need to use overpriced machine made specially for this OS made by guys who made MacOS.

In conclusion, windows is better and macos suk

>why upgrade components
Because you know, 8gb ram is slowly getting not enough for comfort use? And 128 gb ssd is just too few for even a fucking macbook ""pro""? Like to the point you are forced to use cloud storage if you are actually a professional using so called """pro"" in minimum specs, or honestly even if it is a 512 gb ssd, source files for graphics and 3d models are not so light and takes up quite some space if you actually want to archive everything and be able to pick something up again and modify for the client or whatever

Prove me wrong.

>Modifying the hosts file in a windows is leagues easier than terminal command lines in Mac
Except you just open network configurations and manually configure hosts?

Or you modify etc hosts as you would on Linux or any other NIX ?

How is that hard by any metric?

Hi, Pajeet.

Hi hipster starbucks powered parent money taking teenager

Don't act like it's one or the other. No one here actually uses Windows or OSX. If you want to do this flame war then go to a youtube comments section.

>mac can't be a server
>windows can run on ANY HARDWARE (can actually only be ran on x86)
>windows has more software (actually has less than linux)

What did he mean by this?

tfw

Apple is dying because it doesn't make MAC compatible with enough programs. It runs none of my STEAM games and none of the Microsoft offices I need for work. I think it is fine but if they don't make it more compatible there is no way I can use it.

Mac with Windows (boot camp)

Good joke user

just bought a new 2017 13" non-touchbar macbook pro with 16gb ram and 512gb ssd. looking forward to finally having a decent laptop after years of lenovo and dell machines.

Windows Pros:

Ability to mess around with software and hardware
>Proprietary
>Even today no one has found out how to completely disable data collection

Load programs without compatibility issues
>Mostly true, but newer features (DirectX, CearType, high resolution scaling) won't work.

Better hardware
>Justified, but doesn't necessarily lead to better performance

>Gaming
You can buy a console for 200 bucks

>Support
That is if you want to scour pajeet or chink forums

I dont see the advantage of Mac over linux

Industry leading software.
That is all.

just werks out of the box, nice interface too.
