Are tablets still worth buying in 2017?

What do people even use them for?

iPads are nice if you're rich and want to sit on the couch and fuck around on the internet when you're bored

If you count MS Surface as a tablet, those are pretty nice

Otherwise not really

Were they ever worth buying?

I have a 30dollar amazon kindle fire 5 from 2015 running cm13. And you know what, i apreciate the fuck out it, i fucking love that little hunk of garbage. The screen is shit you can see the pixels all over, but guess what, i like it, feels like a super computer i imagined when i was a kid.

I use it to, watch youtube when i'm cooking or taking a shit. I grab documentaries from youtube to watch when i am on a long bus ride or on the country side without internet access. Its the best fucking shit ever. It takes a 128gb sd card which is packed with muh favourite shit like rob ager film analysis and iasip. Atm i'm streaming legend of the galactic heroes on it.

I'm living the dream i had as a little kid and this shit cost next to nothing. Get woke niggas and be grateful.
>RAPE RAPE

Y not use a phone?

Same thing, pretty much. I do the same shit with my phone too of course. Sometimes its just nice to have a bigger screen to watch stuff on and the tablet has a case which is also a stand so its more convenient to just hit play and have stand there like a mini tv.

I use my rooter nexus 7 as a control panel to trigger shit

My parents have iPads and use them for anything not work related. Imagine anything a normie would do on your phone, that's what they do on your tablet when you're at home. That even includes text messages and the only reason they haven't tried to do calls on it is because they're old and used to landlines.

I'm thinking about getting a ThinkPad yoga 11e to use as a tablet myself. 11 inches it would be easy to carry around the house and it would be just big and powerful enough for basic tasks. I'm looking at the 11e specifically because I don't want to spend a whole lot for a basic machine I'm not going to take out of the home. I'm pretty sure a 720 screen would be okay at 11 in my real concern is that's battery life is 5 hours at best.

by the way, if you set up a home server, I think you'd be able to manage streaming your entire media collection from anywhere in your home. I'm planning on setting up a personal server so that any of my computer's can access my entire music and video collection, synchronize my notes with no other machine is turned on and share the same printer.
Technology is so much better when you take control of it yourself.

Small screen and lack of keyboard means I view a smartphone as a "last resort" computer when there isn't anything better for the task.

Shield Tablet K1. (best tablet to play weeb rhythm games and watch animu)

I have a galaxy tablet that I use exclusively for playing YouTube videos of strings and birds and shit for my cat to watch

My mom likes to play her puzzle game on it always about that god damn puzzle game.

I bought a mini 4 last year but sold it a few months later. I found I preferred using my laptop and phone

>not using a small windows tablet that you can take everywhere

>using windows

>using a toy phone OS

>using windows as a phone os

Tablet OS. Win8 works fine on mine.

>Not installing GNU/Linux
Am I the only person on the whole internet who is not thought of this? It's the use case Gnome 3 has been built around from the beginning.

School Idol Festival, Bang Dream, and Deresute.

It's all mobile OSes in general are good for.

1. Linux has garbage support for recent atom cpus and has basically no working drivers, especially standby
2. Gnome3 is (ironically) absolute garbage on touch screens, most UI elements are too small for your fingers

Tbf Windows 8+ isn't much of a good tablet OS, but the touch functionality is great for drawing. I use Surface Pro 3.

>sit on the couch and fuck around on the internet

A laptop is better for that:
- don't have to hold it, just rest it on your dick.
- more relaxing screen position
- if it's a thinkpad you can clit scroll

It's just a big phone trying to be a laptop. I wonder how these things are still alive.

I'm convinced people using tablets deep down want to use a laptop.

But they don't know how to maintain a laptop OS or install new programs.

Do you really believe that only tech illiterate buy tablets

>don't have to hold it, just rest it on your dick.
Great way to roast your testes infertile

I'm buying an ipad pro for grad school to take notes. I won't have to print out a textbook full of powerpoint slides and everything is organized.

Porn in the bed

You don't?

Reading books, manga, watching movies, producing music, all a lot more comfortably done in a tablet than a phone.

>1. Linux has garbage support for recent atom cpus and has basically no working drivers, especially standby
I was actually looking to get a two-in-one laptop similar to a Lenovo Yoga since I highly value haveing a keyboard.
>2. Gnome3 is (ironically) absolute garbage on touch screens, most UI elements are too small for your fingers
I guess I have to use KDE instead and rice it too be more touch screen friendly. I haven't used KDE in a while, can I get a Mac OS like dock natively without something like docker?

Considering that I bought a tablet because it's better for my use case than a laptop would be: no
They are perfect portable media consumption and shitposting devices

if you have a good pc you don't really need a laptop unless you travel alot, a tablet is a cheaper, smaller and more comfortable alternative for having a screen around the house or out somewhere for watching videos/browsing the internets/playing shitty mobile games

>doing tablet tier workloads on his laptop makes it heat up.

I said Thinkpad not a Macbook Pro

I am absolutely certain of it.

Who the hell doesn't own a laptop in 2018-2months?

Of course you are
Either you're a grandpa or someone who (consciously or not) fell for all the retarded memes on this website to fit in

I still use a 9 year old eeepc

I don't know anyone who's tech literate enough to, say, install Linux who also owns a tablet.

Well, actually I know one guy but he only uses it as a toy for his 3 year old.

i have a desktop PC and nvidia shield

laptops are shit

Nice anecdotal evidence.

I had a nexus 7 but gave it to my family because the phone is easier to use

Tablets are ideal for consumption.

Unless you need to actually make something and either need the hardware to produce results, tablets allow a pretty damn comfortable and cost-efficient format.

>Can I get a Mac OS like dock natively without something like docker?
Let me fix that for you. OS X*

I use a 13" 1080p chinkpad as a pdf viewer.

2012 or 2013? I restored my softbricked 2012 and it's slow and the screen sucks by 2017 standards but it still works. Battery is probably shot from being left dead for a long time.

2013. Battery is shit and i could never keep it charged

I use a 12.2 inch tablet mostly on the couch and in bed.

Perfect for watching films/anime/etc, reading comics, and browsing with two windows open.

Love the size, only downside is it's stuck on Android 5.1.

Not surprised I got the name wrong since it's been 10 years since I was a Mac user. I think it does have a Mac style dock somewhere but the full screen dashboard is pretty good so I don't think I'll need it.

Exactly what I'd like a small touch screen laptop for. something in between my smartphone to my laptop. I do make something but it's writing. I usually do my writing in vim with i3. I'm starting to wonder if whatever I get to use as a Linux tablet can replace my laptop, especially since I hate it.

Any recommended models? I'm sure I could do better then the Yoga 11e.

brb purchasing Huawei mediapad for $219

>tablet
Enjoy having to strain your neck, shoulders, arms, and wrists.

i used one for bedside device until i've got x220. i guess tablets aren't worth much now when every smartphone is 5"-6" and every small laptop weights around kilogram

Have cheap Kindle HD 8. I use to watch movies, play emulators, and browse internet when in bed. They're great for long flights as well, but Sup Forums doesn't leave his bedroom so...

how well does it browse fortune? do webm play in browser?

I feel like tablets are good for things like restaurants to use as menus or for businesses like UPS or whatever to use for keeping inventory.
But I see no need whatsoever for them to be for personal use. Laptops are much better for browsing and shit like that.

Browsing Sup Forums now on one.
Works well. Your not going to have the greatest experience on 1000 post rolling stickies but good for everything else. I put the play store on it and use chrome. Webm plays in chrome.

I use my 2012 all the time for light media consumption mainly and surfing the Internet but like you my battery is shit. Can't believe that this thing is close to 6 years of use and it hasn't kicked on me.

tablet is super comfy for travel. using laptop on the planes/trains/bus is a hassle and smartphone screen isn't big enough.

Not sure you know what docker is.

Bigger screen for porn.

iPad Pro if you're an artist. Cheaper than most professional touch-screen drawing tablets, and it's adequate for most use cases.

I just finished my first semester of grad with an iPad pro for note taking, and it was phenomenal. Could literally write on my textbooks, write on the homework, and then print from the school's printers wirelessly. Was actually pretty impressed.

cool thnx

sucking on that tim cook cock

Not until we get raven ridge on them.

It's the best tablet for pen responsivity. Seeing as how I use it almost exclusively for taking notes, it fit what I needed. It's my first Apple device, but it does the job very well.

more power to you, brother … I jelly

dis is the only right answer

I have a tablet for a little personal media center
It's pretty nice

They were never worth buying. A cheapo Apollo lake laptop with a decent hinge is 100x better in every way. Failing that, everyone has a smartphone.

This. Much as I love the niggarigged tablet 4 cheap concept, it's just a shit version of what any android phone can do while also being useful for phone shit.

I bought an ipad pro so i have something to do when i poop. I get a new one each year.

you can use those 2-in-1s

Fucking no, you buy a drawing tablet if you aren't toying around and use it on a pc/mac or even a laptop, don't give bad advices.

If you hate sitting down in front of the TV tablets are a godsend. Picked up the Fire 8 a while back. Decent for the price but the Amazon ads and layout shit are annoying. If I used it anymore than just watching shows while cooking I would spend the money on something without the bloat

i got one for my gf so she can look up recipes without firing up the T500 i modified for her which she doesn't use except to check her bank statements

she hasn't used it to look up recipes yet, so i have it hooked up to the stereo to play piano music

We are the same person, just got my fire 10 from black friday, worth the upgrade .extremely impressed considering I spent $94 dollars.

I use mine at work because a laptop would be too big.
Otherwise I'd have no reason to own one.

Browsing the internet around the house and comfy porn viewing in bed.

>What's a computer?

Le cumfeeey libbit browsin on the go

My grandma using tablet for reading books and watching movies

I've got a Shield tablet, I fucking love that little brick. It only cost £200 english pounds when I bought it new - fantastic price. The support from Nvidia is great. I really don't understand this board's lack of interest in tablets. It's the kind of gadget I dreamed of as a kid playing Sonic the Hedgehog on a wooden-panelled CRT television

>b-but I can do everything on my phone

Really, you play Baldur's Gate 2 on a 4" screen? Your vision must be fucked

Tablets can totally be worth it.

I bought my mother a 10" a few years ago and she uses it a whole lot, there's not a day that goes by when she doesn't use it.

I bought one for myself too at the same time and I really don't use it much. I either use my 6.5" phone - which is like a home tablet since I have a manlet 5" for carrying around in the outsidw world - or my 15" laptop. I rarely use the 10".

I'm guessing it depends on your preferences and what other devices you have.

I see your point but it depends. I prefer my 6.5" phone over my 10" for reading and things like that, the 10" is too big to be comfortable unless it's on a stand playing a movie or something. Then again, my 6.5" is more like a tablet. I do agree that a 6.5-7" device is way better than a 5" for everything, I don't use that to read or watch anything ever.. but it's perfect for carrying around.
