Ok context: I work at a highschool, and one student has flashed his own OS onto his tablet (we provide them).
I can't log in, because it's not on our network. And my methods of getting passed his passwords haven't worked. So I thought I would just mount the drive in linux and try to explore to it (I think he has some shit on here.)
But ubuntu apparently has a hard time with GPT partitioned harddrives or something, and it's also claiming that the filesystem is dirty and... here I am.
I'm using a live install, it can see the drive, but won't mount it. I haven't used gparted yet, I will probably try that next. A buddy of mine recommended Kali. I tried mounting it through the terminal, it's sdb1, but it won't mount.
Win10 has a "fast boot" option that saves part of the OS state to hyberfile.sys to speed up boot times. For some reason linux doesn't like that, and thinks it's corrupt. But I can't get into the OS and disable it because it's a power option, and this fucker removed the recovery tools so I can't even boot up a CMD and delete hyberfile.sys manually.
What's worse is he keeps pestering us to give it back to him. Which to be fair, he needs it for homework. But come on dude, don't fuck with the tablets.
Am I missing something obvious here?
Blake Thomas
Was there a usage agreement? Bring in his parents/authorities at worst for violating it.
But kind of your fault for not respecting his freedoms.
Isaiah Campbell
>not respecting his freedoms What freedoms? To improperly use a school-issued device?
If he had a problem with the OS or had privacy concerns, he should have mentioned that to someone appropriate -- not modify a piece of property that does not belong to him.
Liam Robinson
>To improperly use a school-issued device? >If he had a problem with the OS or had privacy concerns, he should have mentioned that to someone appropriate -- not modify a piece of property that does not belong to him. There you go then.
Jaxson Cook
boot into winpe format your disk fat32 youll get a command prompt type the following diskpart list disk select disk 0 clean create partition primary format fs=ntfs -quick assign youll be able to boot into windows install disk and reinstall i know this because i to work at a school with a little shits
Ryan Wright
Don't argue with quads, newfag
I don't really have any ideas but public schools suspend people from tech all the time for porn so don't be afraid to make him move to all paper for being a little asshole
Oliver Roberts
>respecting his freedoms
OP didn't specify in more detail, but I belive the tablets are school property and usually students have to sign some kind of user agreement or a waiver which probably includes a clause that bans the end user from modifying or damaging the device their were provided by the institution.
As long as the little shit doesn't pay for it he CAN disrespect his freedoms...
David Hernandez
Pretty sure he was trying to see if the kid had the anarchist's cookbook on his tablet or something like that
Sebastian Collins
>Pretty sure he was trying to see if the kid had the anarchist's cookbook on his tablet or something like that i doubt it desu the kid was probably just looking at porn if anything
Liam Thomas
Don't you have any sort of protocol for this type of situation? In my case we just notify the student and his parents that he made shouldn't have changed the os and that we will proceed to remove it. If he wants to save any data he's free to do so, but it has to be done in school premises and someone from the maintenance team has to be present. Also, it think we have a 3 strike rule, like if he fucks with it 3 time we just take it away, but we never applied that one before.
That being said, if you're just trying to fuck around with someone else's computer to be a l337 h4x0r, fuck off and buy a fucking book on system security
Jace Taylor
>To improperly use a school-issued device? oh no a student is trying to actually learn something about computers instead of just using whatever overpriced "learning apps" your superintendent paid for
>If he had a problem with the OS or had privacy concerns, he should have mentioned that to someone appropriate that someone appropriate is probably you and if he asked you you would probably just say "sorry take it or leave it"
Adrian Bennett
The school supplied devices keep getting lawsuits for massive privacy invasions. Fucking kill yourself.
Nathan Gutierrez
>Paying your taxes so a kid gets a loaned computer and break it
Good Goy
Ryan King
how hard did you hit the kid?
Dominic Gutierrez
Instead of fighting with the student perhaps schedule some one-on-one time with them and develop some sort of personalized learning plan with them. Clearly they are ahead of the other students.
If you yourself aren't able to make a learning plan for the student then seek someone's help to do so. The worst thing you can do is hinder the student's curiousty because >muh rulez.
Carson Bailey
what about if they ever want to get a job some day? shouldnt they know in real life there's consequences for being a shit?
Nathaniel Turner
>his tablet >(we provide them) Look man, does the tablet for most intents and purposes belong to the student as they see fit? Or is it maintained by the school and to be used by students within the strict limitations you specify?
In case of the former, give it back and stop being a bitch. In case of the latter, just reimage it because the student is out of bounds. In neither case is it remotely right for you to look at their private shit.
Camden Phillips
these
but anyways you probably would have known how to mount that partition if you googled the simple error message. if you can't do that basic task then you shouldn't be touching his files
Ryan Howard
What if that kid is browsing Sup Forums from his terminal browser and tiling window manager right now?
This communication is compromised.
Matthew Watson
Obviously and include a piece on consequences in the meeting.
Austin Smith
Seems like the kid could do OP's job better than OP can.
Oliver Reyes
I've run into a similar problem trying to dual boot Linux and Windows 10. Look into ntfsfix.
Landon Perez
I dealt with this as a teacher OP
Solution: bring in his parents, show them the contract he had to sign to receive the tablet, suspend him 3 days for breaking contract, and then take away his device. Responsibility isn't earned by being allowed to break an agreement.
Zachary Myers
>One student has flashed his own OS onto his tablet. >I can't log in. >I think he has some shit on here.
You provided him the tablet so he can study through it right? Well... he is. Also, you're trynna break his privacy so I dunno why you're so mad at him, jackass.
Josiah Jenkins
I'm not saying you should advocate it but you could reeducate him that systems like Ubuntu can be run live without interfering with the host OS.
It's transparent, it's clean, it's ethical. I would run linux live off a usb all the time in high school.
Jonathan Howard
Wait, so is he running GNU/Linux or something, or did he just reinstall Windows to get past restrictions? You mention he flashed a different OS, but then complain about Windows' sleep thing.
Jayden Harris
>What's worse is he keeps pestering us to give it back to him. >Am I missing something obvious here? looooooooooooool
You tell him to get fucked and wait until you restore it back to how it was, this is basic IT if you fuck up the device that was provided to you then you damn well wait until it's unfucked.
David Ramirez
Just give back the stupid tablet and tell him to fix it before he returns it to the school. Geez
Isaac Anderson
It's only fucked by OP's standards
I'm interested in knowing how OP found out
Liam Allen
why are you even reseting it in the first place? whats wrong with him running what he wants on it as long as he returns it the same way he was given it?
Also why are you looking at the files on there and how did you know he had modified it?
He was right to be suspicious and to modify it.
Nathaniel Ramirez
>why are you resetting it in the first place confirmed cant read. he says he cant get into it and wants to go through it for devious shit before he resets it. its the schools property thus the files belong to the school.
Jordan Thompson
>its the schools property thus the files belong to the school. not if they can't be accessed :^)
student is playing 2d chess
Mason Long
We get a couple of chucklefucks like this at work, they think they're so clever and end up shitting up their machine despite being warned not to do it, so they just get paved over and reimaged.
Levi Ward
Do you call in their parents, sit them down, and give them the talk?
Or do you be OP and try to understand what motivates these insane people?
Parker Lopez
>paying my taxes so a shit administration can give all the money to an OEM for a bunch of overpriced computers that don't actually teach kids anything except that the school is going to get mad at them for being curious and tinkering you are the problem with education
Ryder Nguyen
Does autism really hinder the ability for people to see obvious issues here?
>kid gets laptop that isn't his >gets told not to fuck with it >fucks with it anyway >OP investigates in case of any malicious activity in which the school could also be liable for >minority of retards cry "muh freedoms"
Brandon Morris
Teacher from other post here, we don't like students fucking with the devices because we pass the devices on after the year finishes to newer students.
Angel Robinson
>kid gets laptop from school to use >school loads it with proprietary shit and uses it to snoop on him >kid frees himself from the botnet (true hero) >teacher mad as fuck comes here to bitch about his incompetence >gets told to fuck off >big gay user thinks he knows everything and quotes everyone on the thread
Nathaniel Foster
>give a computer to someone you don't trust >act retarded and butthurt when they do something with it you don't agree with it sure is 2017 in here
Stop being lazy and do your job, in any IT if you give people computers they're going to fuck with them, that's the whole goddamn point, you should be re-imaging the device every time you pass it on
Angel Roberts
Next time lock down the BIOS so they can't boot other things without opening the device and resetting it.
Jace Morgan
Then don't use it. It's pretty simple.
Kayden Jenkins
nobody even questions if OP's "I'm a teacher and this tablet belongs to the school" story is true. he might as well be some creep trying to access someones dick pics.
David Walker
op is a faggot
Dominic Hall
And? As long as he restore it to your desired babby settings by the time he gives it back to the school, what's the harm? Do being in a position of power just gives you this much of a boner? >inb4 muh rules
Leo Rogers
just reflash the fucking tablet? what's the issue? how are you even employed?
Camden Lee
Why the fuck are you fucking with it if he needs it for homework? Just let him use it the way he wants until he has to return it, fuck off nigger.
Jonathan Perry
Honestly, this is why we can't have nice things. Niggers and autistic people ruin things for the rest of us. >school issues laptops for the last decade >works just fine >school is now 50% black due to district bullshit >large special ed program which is just babysitting for retarded single mothers who were too stupid to abort their downie kid >have to stop issuing laptops we are all equal though
Dylan Ortiz
Underrated post.
Grayson Lee
>Am I missing something obvious here? Yes. Just mount the partition as read-only and unless its encrypted you can ser everything.
Benjamin Taylor
oh but he didnt and thats why OP ran into the problem you dingle. how would he have it if the kid didnt give it back? 10/10 bud
Hunter Garcia
>how would he have it if the kid didn’t give it back
Uh maybe the nigger noticed that he was running his own copy of Windows 10 on it and forcibly confiscated it? How hard is that to understand, shitposter? Why would he be asking for it back for homework if he returned it to the school willingly? 10/10 fucking idiot.
Jose Morales
yeah maybe he noticed he was breaking the rules and took it per the agreement, good point. otherwise he maybe, oh i dunno, turned it in for a period like the weekend or a break or something? its not like you can steal your own shit dude the tablet doesnt belong to the kid how hard is that to understand? 11/10 this time dude i got to hand it to ya
Luke Watson
I used to work at a high school too for their IT department, if a student ever did something like that or anything similar that could get him in trouble, if I caught it before it was discovered by a staff member I would personally ask the teacher if I could speak with him just before class is dismissed and just explain to him what I’d have to do if his teacher found out and encourage him to do it at home instead, and not think it’s a bad thing.
Usually they cooperated this way and it kept a curious student who felt clever from having all PC privileges revoked a weeks detention or at worst, suspension. Felt good to keep kids out of trouble instead of punishing them for shit like this. All it does is discourage it in the future instead of being explained that it’s a great thing to try to fuck with stuff to learn (just not on school equipment without permission).
However if they did it again, obviously I just reported the student. I gave them a chance to cooperate incognito from the staff, and if they refuse I don’t have much of a choice.
Eli Smith
Can you not just fucking re-image it? What kind of school provides tablets/PCs without a backup image?
Hudson Price
If the student can do his work, why does it matter? I wouldn’t want some school botnet shit spying on me. Fuck off freedom-hating autist.
Henry Turner
Then why'd he want it back for studying then? Maybe because he's still supposed to be in possession of it? It's most likely lent to him for the whole year, and we're only in December. Another perfect score for you user :^)
OP most likely saw him using the tablet in class, didn't recognize iOS and started throwing a fit
Colton Taylor
let me spell it out for ya buddy. its not his fucking tablet, he can use it for what hes supposed to, or not use it. thats it.
if he wants to do what all to his shit then he can buy his own tablet and be as free as he wants.
>hes still supposed to be in possession of it but he broke the agreement so he should never get it back. full marks.
Ayden Johnson
I started working tech for a school district and all the cracked laptop screens have Mexican last names on the ID.
Here was a note one put: >we was havin a party and mi couzin step' d on it an it brake This was a 16 year old HS student
Josiah Carter
>buy his own tablet
Except he can’t, because schools don’t allow that shit either. If you try to bring your own tablet in they’ll tell you to put it away or risk it being confiscated, and to pull out your district supplied tablet.
You’ve really never visited a modern school, have you?
Ryder Baker
what rong wit havin party wit me cuzn bro? not r falt it brake like you NIGGA lul
John Lopez
>ten year old outsmarts a tech """"specialist"""
Ayden Scott
I graduated from high school a few years ago and at my school there weren't any weird communist regulations like this.
Nathan Ramirez
Same here, the same Mexican kid apparently just enjoyed slamming laptop screens shut to make them break. After the 2nd one we made him pay for it because he said the same shit as last time, “I just opened it like this from the cart”
Matthew Jenkins
>he needs it for homework >pull it out at school >you do homework at school nice, good job. proud of you. im gonna print that out and tape it to my fridge
Ryan Gutierrez
Why the fuck are schools issuing laptops now anyway? Even the poorest of poor have PCs and an internet connection
Aaron Hernandez
Was it a US school? That’s how it is in Oklahoma where I used to live at least, you had to use the school supplied laptops. You couldn’t bring your own to use in class (though you could use it outside of class or during the “free” time just before class ended), you absolutely had to use a school laptop to do class work on, and if you refused you were given detention.
Not everybody is so lucky to go to a school that lets you use whatever you want to do classwork during a lesson.
Xavier Hernandez
did Mister Pablo Sanchez then visit you house with his cartel?
Jason Jackson
the poorest of the poor dont have schools my dude. internet isnt ubiquitous just because everyone you talk to online has it.
Julian Davis
Because, believe it or not, there are millions of families with children that don’t have PCs and have no idea how to use a computer. They only have phones and internet, so they lack even the most basic job requirement for most jobs now, which is computer usage experience and typing.
So they try to have every kid learn how to use a PC. Why issue a computer to every kid though I have no idea, just make them do lessons in a lab.
Nolan Jackson
I would hope not. Wouldn’t want him to break my laptop screen.
Robert Martin
And this is why we can't have nice things. That's not how education works, that's how you create Pahjeet tier dumbasses that can't do anything unless you tell them how to. That kid is clearly way ahead of his peer and forcibly shoving rules down his throat for no reason other than communism isn't gonna do good for anyone. Now it'd be a different matter if he actually broke or bricked the tablet, which clearly isn't the case.
Joshua Fisher
>because everyone you talk to online has it. you can't prove this
Nathan Sanders
This. If a kid can still complete his assignments just fine the way he has it and I’m going to reimage it at the end of the year, I don’t give a fuck what he runs on it. Punishing the kid for being curious and learning this stuff on his own just makes him not want to do it anymore at all.
Cooper Hall
>But ubuntu apparently has a hard time with GPT >A buddy of mine recommended Kali The kid is less autistic than you are. What the fuck was the tablet running? Windows 10? Stop dicking around with Buttbuntu and use Fedora or Windows and mount the disk with that. Or you can just format it in GParted and tell the kid to stop fucking with it.
Joseph Morales
To be fair, and not OP, but the kid didn't need to straight up install it alongside Windows.
He could have just used it live (although with limited encryption/privacy options) and nobody would bat an eye.
Luke Garcia
Yeah, I live in Maryland. My school explicitly allowed work on my own laptop or phone or whatever I wanted.
Angel Rogers
He didn’t install Linux user, he either took it off the domain or just installed a fresh copy of Windows. OP specifically mentioned he can’t login normally because it’s not on the domain network, and he can’t access the hard disk because he can’t turn off Fast Startup which hibernates the OS on shutdown, as you need to be completely shut down or else Linux reports it as unclean and can’t be mounted.
Zachary King
>being smart means you can break agreements are you able to keep a stable job or..?
Carson Ross
Tfw the entire time this thread has been up be been under the impression they had windows installed by default but the kid installed Ubuntu but it’s the completely other way around
God bless this school
Daniel Jenkins
go back to stealing bicycles
Isaac Richardson
Yes, very well so, thank you for asking. And that's because my employers aren't mindless automatons and don't care how I do my work as long as it's done
Lemme guess, you're one of those fags that think that any rule should be respected, for the sole reason that's it's a rule and that you can't break rules because the rules says so, and not because it's existence actually makes sense in the first place? Why wouldn't you break an unfair agreement when it doesn't cause harm to the other party?
Thomas Foster
Glad to see the retard patrol is out in force today. What would we ever do without their simplistic, naïve arguments and black-and-white views of the world?
Juan Cook
>Win10 has a "fast boot" option ... linux doesn't like that ... I can't get into the OS and disable it Can you access the BIOS/UEFI? Might be able to turn off fast boot support there.
Ayden Taylor
rules ≠ agreements. im all for questioning rules, but when you say you are gonna do something to get posession of someones property then do otherwise youre in the wrong no matter how smart you are. if the kid were so smart he woulda read the agreement and refused it if he planned on flashing something else to get around the system he agreed to operate within. they have all paper programs for kids who dont want to use the tech.
to answer your first question no, im not the type that thinks rules should be blindly accepted.
to answer your second, i think you shouldn't enter into unfair agreements, and if you do you should take steps to leave the agreement. but i dont think your should violate the agreement, whether or not it causes harm. this is because i believe in concepts like trust and honor
Jason Jones
>replying to the whole thread for shitty b8 could you dont?
James Smith
ntfsfix will nuke the hibernation file and let linux mount it. It makes it undirty.
Christopher Lewis
Boot it up to the OS, reboot to loonix. Newer Windows doesn't close the FS properly unless you reboot.
Colton Hernandez
give it back boy
Cameron Bennett
Fair enough, I can see your points and I do respect an honest man. I just don't think that "not signing" is a very valid advice in this case, as using purely paper would severely handicap you compared to the other students, and the agreement itself is quite badly made and just screams tech illiterate bureaucrat. There's really no perfect outcome in a situation like that
Nicholas Ortiz
was the preinstalled os some of those corporate shits with policies that prevent even running own programs? i too would remove that
Julian Ross
i agree that kids should have access to learning about cs literacy including flashing operating systems, and youd be hard pressed to find a good cs course for high school students. but in my experience laptops are assigned for language arts and math courses neither of which has to do with cs but is enhanced by the abilities of computers because of word processors and assignment programs (im aware of the math and cs link but the use of laptops in a high school math is not to do with encription or programming or especially operating system stuff) im sure staff needs access for a number of reasons and even if its restricted its the schools laptops so you cant really say the kid has the right to mess with it without permission. and i agree that full paper would handicap so i think the kid should just use it the way intended and just dick around with tech on his own time with his own hardware. desu the best cs classes are digital design classes cause you touch in website building and learn a number of programs that are industry standards.
Nicholas Ward
I've been in OP's shoes, the retardation/autism is very real.
Christian Gomez
Most likely, yet retards will still defend it.
Camden Davis
>bring in his parents, show them the contract he had to sign to receive the tablet, suspend him 3 days for breaking contract, and then take away his device. Responsibility isn't earned by being allowed to break an agreement. >punish a kid severely for exploring this is what is wrong with education today, lmao
you are part of the problem
Colton Hall
ah yes, the fact that Sup Forums is autistic and retarded means that its excusable to arguably break rule 10 and rule 3 by mass replying.
Ayden Peterson
punish the kid en a standard way for breaking a signed agreement. its not why he did it, but that he did it.
Jace Garcia
Oh my god you are all fucking RETARDS.
Image the fucking thing and move on. Seriously how long does it take you? And you work in IT? What the fuck are you doing?
Nathaniel Cruz
>its not why he did it, but that he did it. lmao this sort of heavy handed shit is why kids hate school and skip it
Austin Thomas
Nah. "Hurr durr zero tolerance" this shit is ruining education world wide, I've gotten in some trouble in school for being bulled on. Fucking retarded. Glad you're not one of these uptight cunts.
Jayden Lewis
>lmao this sort of heavy handed shit is why juvenile delinquents hate school and skip it
