Up till recently we only had confirmation from Asus that Coffee Lake would be able to run on any 1151 motherboard with a bios update.
We now have people who have gotten it running thanks to third party bios fuckery.

R3 1200 designed to compete against i3 7100 can still perform very close to or greater than the latest i3 8100.

did they do this because of power delivery? it makes sense that z270 mobos are only designed for the power and thermal loads of stock clock + moderate overclocked quad cores. by increasing wattage considerably and increasing thermal output by 50% wouldnt it make sense for them to encourage people to only use new mobos that are designed to handle the new added load?
I doubt extra cores would result in greater power consumption than an i7 7700k running at close to 5GHz...
Most boards already can handle the load, my i7 870 ran at 4.2GHz for years before I upgraded, according to tomshardware that was pulling almost 250w just from the socket...

Although desu coffee lake looks like a very minor upgrade in features, just more cores and faster ram, so they probably kept the socket as they had spares (cost cutting) and did their voodoo Jew magic through software and bullying
