i remember it was the sansa clip+ due ro something called like "rockblox" enabling custom firmware or something
then the thing got discontinued. i really got annoyed when after a literal year of it being discontinued and over 100 USD it was still the standard, so i just stopped looking for an answer

Why would you make pixel art for anything other than animation? I mean that Katamari Shadow of the Colossus thing was kind of neat, but a little "vaporware" for me.
Point is that even WITH animations gif is only useful for things that have an extremely low number of colors.

Like I said, a little too "vaporware" for me. Nostalgia for something that never existed with a distinct air of hipsterism to it. Keeping the old game graphics methods alive with sprite animations is one thing, but taking that and turning it into some framed (no pun intended) and mounted painting just strikes me as a little, well, pretentious.

Current situation
I use my Sansa Clip+ for music. I adore how I can hold the whole thing in the palm of my hand and use the tactile buttons to navigate my library without having to look at the screen, I have the layout memorized.
I'm waiting until Foobar Mobile gets vgmstream, which will allow me to play all of my video game format music on my phone, the way I current do with Foobar2000 on my desktop. Even though it'll be harder to navigate while on-the-go, Foobar Mobile will have the advantage of playing ALL of my music without me having to convert it

It's an ancient codec that has been superseded time and time again by more efficient ones.

it's fine, but I've steered away from it because I'm too lazy to retrieve LAME_enc for converting to it in Audacity and Foobar2000. I've been using OGG as my go-to for lossy compression. Everybody that plays MP3 can seemingly play OGG, I even have a $10 AAA-battery powered MP3 Player that can playback OGG.

The Zune is fucking amazing. Like holy shit.
Get a Gen1 30GB model if you can, they're built like tanks. I had a Gen3 120GB and it kinda stuttered going through menus. Gen1 had better hardware since it was trying to kill the iPod
