Pi Thread

I've had this raspberry pi 3 since last Christmas, haven't used it because I didn't already own a HDMI screen.
Given I have no peripherals already what should I buy to make this thing actually usable?
Is it worth putting the time and money into this thing?
Links appreciated.

>Is it worth putting the time and money into this thing?
Yeah, if you want to learn the skills to make 100K+ a year.

>Given I have no peripherals already what should I buy to make this thing actually usable?
Don't.

>make 100K+ a year
>with rpi

yeah sure.

learning linux
yup

Well I attached it to my router and I run a headless NAS+torrentbox using just deluged, samba and a couple of HDDs, which serves media to my clients (pc, laptop, TVs with RPI/non-RPI boxes with Kodi on them).
I load torrents on it through a web interface and a few minutes later I find the new movie on my TVs.
It's something.

Run it as an ad blocking DNS server

You dont need a monitor

thanks for this info man

Engineers love the things, cause you can just leave them in place for a test right then buy another one.
I really like this idea.

>I didn't already own a HDMI screen
>what should I buy
A fucking HDMI to DVI or VGA adapter, depending on what your screen has.

Daaayum. Pi goals right there

Is this the state of Sup Forums today? Where the post prosaic and non-technological application for a raspberrypi board is recognized by anons as some goal worthy of a Daaayum? Oh, what a state we are in today. The continual descent of Sup Forums into stupidity and mindless consumerism continues (yes, it was shit in the past and has always been shit, but even so the shit keeps getting shittier with each passing day and week and year). I weep for our future.

(FWIW, there's nothing wrong with using a Pi as a headless seedbox and/or media server, but the lack of gigabit ethernet is a huge limitation).

How strong is your power supply, mine is 2A but i cant use hdd(case to usb 3.0), i have voltage drops while disc spinup

ffs, Enginneers in STEM fields start at arround 45,000 to 80,000 depending on the cost of living of the city you live in.

80,000 in NYC is not that great, it's basically lower middle class.

45,000 in low cost of living areas is also just lower middle class.

Yeah, after between 4-8 years of working you will get to 6 figures, but so what? You can make that with a lot of different office jobs.

TECH jobs are good, but they're really not that much better than most white collar occupations.

I just started a small project for my mom for Christmas, my plan is to stream a web radio inside her home from a Pi so she could listen to that through her radio whenever she likes.
Reason: There are only shitty radio stations around here, and my mom loves to listen to great music but doesn't want to start the PC and search stuff, I also thought of downloading tons of folders of music but that would just take away the "radio feeling".

you need a powered usb hub, lad

Or use a HDD with it's own power supply.

>tfw started my first job as a junior developer at 100k+/yr + benefits + stock options

feelsgood

>renting a corner with other 20 people for 3k
>cup of coffee price is $25

Load an OS with preconfigured SSH on it and connect it to your router, that way you can control it without HDMI.
Use it as a pihole, small NAS server for pushing files around the network (you'll probably want an ext hdd for that), run minidlna on it and stream movies/music over your network, configure a backup server on it, use it as a VPN server, host a small webserver on it.
There's a lot you can do with a bare RPi and you can learn a lot about running and administrating a server and properly using Linux with it.

Nice try, but I don't live in a shitty place like San Francisco, NYC or London. Cost of living here is cheap so I'm just making bank.

Stock options aren't special. You get that almost everywhere in tech fields.

Benefits are a given for any white collar job.

0/10, please try again and be less of a 12 year old next time.

>junior dev at 100k+
>not in a major tech area

"no"

Doesn't the pi board have an rj45 port?

Also, fuck you.

Yes, but it's a 10/100 port and it uses the USB bus so you're not even going to get full 100 Mbps. Hence why I said it lacks gigabit ethernet.

Also, thank you and fuck you too, user!

Stay mad user, I'm just telling the truth. Google pays well as a gig.

I wonder if it could handle 100mbps in the first place. Use odroid or something if you want arm servers. Good luck with kernel support. :^)

did you not increase the power supply to USB?
raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/questions/27708/is-setting-max-usb-current-1-to-give-more-power-to-usb-devices-a-bad-idea

should be fine, i used a sata enclosure with a normal hdd

Use ssh if you got no monitor.
Learn Linux, make use of it, earn money.

Okayyy, but the fact you're bragging about it proves the rule doesn't it?

Wasn't "bragging" until some faggot decided to claim what I said was false.

*shrug*

>t. florida man

Not american :)

How the fugg do I mount 2 HDDs on my RPi3 without making a mess of power adapters and cables? Can I pump more juice through the RPi?

Reposting this project from another thread because I think it's too autistic for anyone to care

Can it be done with a cheap backlit LCD? Or will it have problems with refresh rates when streaming text at 350+ WPM?

I just bought a pi 3 for 5$. What should i do with it, my router is already my file server. I don't need a dlna server. Pi hole is not something i want. I already have androidboxes that run kodi. I don't play games. I already have arduinos i use for any electronics projects. I guess my best bet is to sell it for 20$ and make a profit?

fuggg :DDDD

Get one of these and connect it to any old monitor.
I got one and i works like a charm!

>taking a big upfront and not negotiating for a percentage based on stock / IP
My company pays software developers 60-70k a year, but every February you get a fat check based on how many things you've created and how your department does. First year is predicted to be ~140k, so that's a nice 70k check. Some of the phd scientists in the same field that get a bunch of patents that actually turn out to be worth a shit hit over 300k.

these things are essential
you are obviously too thick to own one

You could just run it in headless mode

>smug anime picture
sure man everyone believes you

please tell me how you don't care if anyone believes you, you're definitely not looking for validation from Sup Forums

Build a real notebook which Sup Forums approves.

>$300

fuck off, retard

Not my fault that you are poor.

why would anyone pay so much for something so easy?

Why not get a Le Potato?

>Libre SBC

>raspberry pi
>Sup Forums approved

You use it instead of the arduinos because it has wifi and bluetooth on board.

You could also make a torrent box.

what a pile of shit. I would not buy one of those.

you could use the av out with a 3.5mm to rca output cable

tried to set this up the other day but my modem/router (its a shitty 2 in 1, model: sbg6580-g228) wont allow me to redirect dns servers. is there another way i can use the pi hole?

yes i tried google already. thanks

>delusional pitards think their $20 home NAS aggregates built on a literal children's toy from a couple online step-by-step guides is going to get them a six-figure income
Only if you're brown or have a vagina.

texas? or oil?

Yo quick question. I more or less want to start a piratebox-like server up. Only instead of being local, it's online. I basically want a dropbox me and all my friends can share with. I tried out Nimbus but I'm not interested in all the security shit or making an account or anything, I just want anonymous file sharing and shit.
