Wtf is this true?

Wtf is this true?

I'm one of them. Oneplus one user kms

It's true but I'm not sure it's a problem. We need botnets and this is an easy way to build one.

it's what happens when everyone publishes their own version of android and require rigorous testing and extensive work to push out the simplest updates
google's trying to fix it

It's not that bad when you consider many android devices aren't phones.

I'm still stuck on KitKat and I can't load custom firmware on my phone. Sucks, man.

Is it really that bad, though? I mean you hear about vulnerabilities once in a while but there's not really much in the wild exploiting them not to mention 99% of all Android users don't have root and only install from the Play Store.

Flash your recovery and a new OS already, Oneplus One exists for Custom ROMs.

Android is for POWER USERS. Not that babby Apple shit. POWER USERS run unsecure software just for the thrill of it and to show how HARDCORE they are.

Whats the problem? People can keep their phones longer because they still work just fine

android devices that aren't phone either fall into the tablet rage of 2.3-5 or IoT 7+
so it's definitely still pretty bad
consider that the security update graph probably looks 10x worse

yes, old devices are just not being updated automatically.
my galaxy s3 was running android 4 until i manually installed 7 - i simply didn't care before. Many people out there either don't know or understand how to update their phone OS, or why they even should.

LG V20 user here...still running 7.1

Just imagine only 70% windows machines stay with XP or an older version.

Of course it's true. Android is a platform fractured to hell and back with proprietary spins that will never be updated, by companies that don't give two shits about supporting older products. When the only option for updating is to _try_ loading custom firmware, there is a major structural problem with the ecosystem.

>Thanks for the support moto

It seems like the current method by manufactures is to release it and forget it.

Tell me why it matters as long as we have the latest security patch?

What does Android 8 offer that makes it so much better than 7?

>FREEDOM IS A PROBLEM

Fucking fascists and commies.

There's plenty of android streamers.

It's hardly surprising when manufacturers stop support approximately ten seconds after they release a replacement product.

If it was one manufacturer with most of the market share, it wouldn't be so much of a problem, because there's an active third party scene, but there are like a dozen major manufacturers of products, a hundred medium and small ones, and countless fly-by-night faggots.

My note 4 still got security update regularly even though it's stuck in 6.0. I'd rather that then having my phone got cucked by new version that render a perfectly fine phone useless like iphone.

Part of the problem is that they have to convince the carriers to take the updates.
If the carriers aren't willing then the updates they make won't be pushed to users, which makes working on the updates a waste of money.

The problem is basically threefold.

New android verisions need new drivers for older hardware, hardware manufacturers may not want to work on those drivers if the request base is tiny.

Phone manufacturers may not want to work on updates is the carriers aren't interested.

Carriers may not be interested in ordering updates and arranging them if their user base is small or seemingly uninterested.

How is Android's binary driver nightmare and the vendor fetish for locking bootloaders supposed to be freedom?

What do I care?

Yeah I am one, rooted my s3 a few years ago and haven't updated the os since, just apps.

When using Android studio and setting up a new project you have a list of version to choose from. Beside every version is a apx percentage of devices running them. All those cool flashy APIs? Yeah not going to be used foor a few years,

They're trying to address this though. Last I heard they introduced a abstraction layer between the device drivers and the OS. The idea being that the vendor (Samsung and co) can write device drivers once targeting this abstraction. When the OS interfaces with hardware it doesn't have low level access, it makes requests against this abstraction. When firmware upgrade time comes along pushing AOSP to the device is stupid easy and just works.

Seems to be true, phones usually get updates for 6 months since release.

This is a huge fucking deal, in ANdroid land you need to know what you're doing to install major upgrades. One of my friends is 6-fucking-5 years old, I couldn't explain upgrading if I tried. I don't even want to think about the security vulns for his device.

iOS gets this right. Updates stretching back years for anything not-over-5-years-old and a simple popup with an install and later button. AMazing that everyone manages to update

>in ANdroid land you need to know what you're doing to install major upgrades
>There's an update and I'm going to download it and prepare it for installation by default!
I dunno about you, but you're probably just retarded and possibly configured his phone in the first place.

Nah, he's just an old dude that doesn't like people fucking with his gear. Given that he's dealing with escorts and blow I don't blame him on the paranoia.

You don't need root to install outside of playstore
