the fact this thread has 0 replies is kinda shocking

Yeah, I guess we are old. :/

this post killed a net neutrality bait post.. time to get booted

i logged in a few months ago and i was surprised to see a bunch of people still logged onto it

I got tons of nudes from random girls on the internet through AIM I guess. Always preferred yahoo messenger though, and ICQ for talking to my UO buddies.

Who was using it? Like your buddy list still had a bunch of people active on it?

yea a lot of people on my buddy list

I used AIM for classmates and ICQ for internet friends.

That really surprises me. How old? Age group? I kinda thought AIM was still only used by boomers.

>That really surprises me. How old? Age group? I kinda thought AIM was still only used by boomers.

i'm 30, aim was huge when i was a teen

Nobody cares about AIM, grandpa.

>Our focus will always be on providing the kind of innovative experiences consumers want. We’re more excited than ever to focus on building the next generation of iconic brands and life-changing products.

EVERY
SINGLE
FUCKING
TIME

none because i'm not a mutt

Yeah, it was huge when I was a teen also (I'm 32), I just thought everyone stopped using it when Facebook came along. Or even sooner.

I was a robot though so was on IRC more than AIM, simply by not having many friends. :/

Never used AIM, but used ICQ when it was brand new and moved to Skype, which i still use.

If you were to still use AOL and log in would you still be able to IM people. Is this just the AIM client

Yeah. AIM was a gobetween if you had a regular ISP.

I had some program that made it where I could run two AIM clients at once, I used to pretend to be someone else in chat groups and stuff with school friends. I'm pretty sure no one knew it was me. My extra character wasn't malicious or anything so don't think people really sniffed it out either.

should have died years ago
good riddance

It's not my best memory but the most memorable incident was talking to someone from here on AIM and he basically explained to me what methods he utilized to safely fuck chickens on the farm he worked on.

I don't know why I'm still here with faggots like you around.

i used it to chat to some chicks in Florida like 10 years ago. suppose it was kinda comforting to share my teenage angst with people i'll probably never meet.

Normies stopped using it in 2008 or so as they migrated to Facebook and text messages. I'm 28 and used it until the end but aside from one IRL person who used it intermittently until a few months before the shutdown all of my IRL friends had long abandoned the platform. I used it exclusively with internet friends, some of whom I'd been chatting with since 2002, and we were all in one chat when the server shut down.

I've never felt emotional about a computer program before. I am genuinely sad AIM is gone.

I never used it but it is sad to see a big part of internet past meet its EOL.

F

u got mail

I remember back in the mid-00's, people had little AIM profiles that navigated like a webpage with clickable links and pictures.

To this day, I never figured out how to do that. I was always the loser faggot with a simple text profile that always hit the character limit.

You guys migrate to IRC?

So what’s the methods?

aim was shit man. i literally only have memories of angsty teenagers on aim, msn was more comfy all around.
better memories, better people, better smileys.

we're all so old now.

This makes me sad. I hope that you guys at least made plans to keep touch via email or Steam or something.

There goes all my names based on dragonball z, pokemon and gundam wing because it was the late 90s and that shit was cool, oh what am I saying I still fucking like dragonball and I'm in my 30s now.

We moved over to Slack and we're still on our forum.

I used it for everything. All of my friends were there. Then slowly but surely, everyone signed off one last time and it was empty. And eventually, I did too. I had good memories with AIM. It's a shame it died the way it did, the spinoffs were nice and lightweight. I don't know how people preferred integrated chats on websites, they seemed so clunky to me.

Glad to hear it. My IRC friends date back to 1998 or so, our network and channel is still up. It used to be very busy and now we are all very quietly idling mostly, but everyone gets to check in every once in a while and it's extremely comfy. I'd say the closest thing I have to call "home"

When Facebook started it had no chat, but as soon as Facebook did that was the last of AIM for anyone I knew. I have to believe text messaging just got so much better with keyboard phones that really put the nail in the coffins also.

Now I don't even know what kids use. I see on Sup Forums everything from KIK to Snapchat to LINE to Discord. I've joined some Discords but I don't see why people prefer that to IRC. I find it really claustrophobic.

When I think of AIM I think of how bad I screwed up on it. I could have made friends but I was an edgy teenager that had no grounding. This caused me to never really make genuine friends, let alone be able to have a relationship. When I think of AIM, I think about how bad I wish I could go back and do it all over again.

>we're all so old now.
I honestly don't think I can take it much more.

I don't understand why people like Discord either. It's cluttered, un-customizable, questionable in terms of security, no good logging, the problems go on. It's a piece of shit compared to IRC.

Agreed. I try to step outside of my autism and think about why people like certain things. For discord I guess it is more approachable? IRC you need a server and port, versus discord you just sign up and click a link. Also easier to display multimedia.

Maybe it's a blessing keeping the normalshits off IRC.

A magical place.

Emily is away, forever

youtu.be/GyV_UG60dD4

when weird al comes out you know you're in a thread full of grandpas.

>I don't know how people preferred integrated chats on websites, they seemed so clunky to me.
They're bad but people use them because the site (Facebook) draws them in for other reasons.

F
I remember replacing all my alert sounds with 2 second clips of Lincoln Park songs

Hitting up grills on AIM since texts weren't unlimited then

I remember AOL group RPs in middle/high school, people think emo kids are edgy weirdos now. They honestly have no clue.

With a CSNY parody, no less.

Did you have goths? The fucking goths were in another world. Hot Topic with those big jeans...

mIRC/IRC is still alive.

Some podcasts even use it as an easy way to make a public chat.

I remember bondage pants, and JNCO jeans. Also those 'Psycho Chihuahua' 3 ring binders, I cannot for the life of me find a image of them.

Yeah JNCO is what I was thinking of, couldn't remember the name. kek those were wild. also those necklaces that looked like anal beads.

Found a picture of the folder dog, I remember those 'Mr. T starter kit' necklaces more, the chain style ones. Also almost everyone wearing Birkenstocks, cargo shorts, polos, and Oakleys.

>Also almost everyone wearing Birkenstocks, cargo shorts, polos, and Oakleys.
Hah, yeah I do remember that!

I meant to highlight the folder dog, not what I did. But yeah I remember those smelly birkenstocks too.

I kinda miss the 90s and early 00s. Not really sure if it was a better time or not, maybe it was just the age.

>So everyone dressed like lesbians
Every time I tell anyone under 30 about fashion back then.

I bet it feels really stupid to have threatened a bunch of developers into changing the name of their client / library and have your shitty IP fade into obscurity anyway.

Instead of libaim and gaim we have libpurple and pidgin.

They pretty much did. I went to a very preppy school so it was polos, golf shorts, and birkenstocks. We had our goths too though, which looked very out of place getting into Land Rovers and Mercedes.

Nostalgia, I had a TBI so I only have a few vague memories. I'm suprised that fucking dog was a clear one.

Sorry to hear that. You ever watch the TV show Skins? Tony has a tmi (I believe that was his injury if I remember correctly)

Yeah, that's exactly what Yahoo!Games said when they were shutting down all their classic parlor games. Weasels.

My dumbass was the one that slipped and whacked my head, no worries. I'll have to check it out.

F

So this is the oldfag thread then?
I'm 33 doing absolutely nothing with my life )`:
I miss the old days when you could just easily make random new friends all over the world united by the internet and chat on the various messengers all day every day. When people were actually excited about it all and eager to meet strangers, rather than only interacting people they already know in real life... Fucking social media and corporate greed ruined everything for everyone forever. Fucking assholes.

Like several of you in this thread, I wish I could go back and do it all over, I would do everything differently.

I know this feel even though I'm eight years younger. I remember using this site back in the day called "Wireclub" that was great. I had a friend from Ireland, two from Argentina and one from California that I really liked and she liked me back and we'd video chat on our own all of the time (I'm from Canada). Shit was awesome in that age. It was totally separate from real life and exciting. Now everything outside of Facebook is just meme avatars, stupid black Twitter-tier humour and political screeching.

Oldfag thread.

Anyone remember Hacker News Network (HNN), L0pht, and attrition?

Or Stile Project?

F
lost my password ages ago, had a good handle tho.. human people acutally migrated to fb messenger. my last convo was prolly 2012.

some chinese hacker has been trying to bruteforce my yahoo account for ~2 years now and I hope it just goes bankrupt and closes down.

holy shit L0pht

lol of course, honestly it really doesn't even seem that long ago, until I really think about it.

Getting old is fucking weird though, like at some point things stopped seeming old, so I'll think shit is recent or just happened recently until I realize it was more than a decade ago.

there was another one, something 'r00t' that always modified logos. Like it would have a mcdonalds logo and r00t would be worked into it. I forget their name (about than the r00t bit). It was all done very sarcastically.

Yeah I know that feel. I really liked that whole hacker ethos of exploration. I don't get that vibe on the internet anymore.

I remember when people used to try to draw the distinction that "hacking is ethical, and CRACKING in unethical"

is* unethical.

man, where did all those people go anyway. it was like all those places dried up overnight

>Getting old is fucking weird though, like at some point things stopped seeming old, so I'll think shit is recent or just happened recently until I realize it was more than a decade ago.

>listening to music
>look at which year it was released
>2010
>"ah that's not that old; that came out just as I was finishing high school (depending on the month of its release)"
>realize that it's been nearly eight fucking years since I've graduated
>get that next terrible feeling as I realize that I've done absolutely nothing since that happened

A lot went into security consulting or something systems related. Some of them are still pretty around and it's kinda cringey to see they have a twitter account and stuff. One of those things better left in the past.

What was your AIM name?

I was DamnSCSIDrive from like 1996

Endless hours of cybering with you're mum

XxOutcastxX .. kek, I was doomed from the get go.

...

Anyone remember AIM Invader? Or just plain using the warn feature to get people suspended for a day or two?

Okay I'm an old man so about my bed time.

>tfw get disabled and have to call to AOL with your parents to get re-enabled.
>come up with some questionable story on what happened

Ditching it for MSN Messenger which was 100x better

aim was so incredible, god i wish i could go back

I got no respects for it. I never wanted it even though I still have it with a third party client. The userbase basically made it a requirement.
I'd complain that I don't have a way to contact friends outside of steam anymore, except most of my friends stopped using it. They're barely on steam either. Oh well, internet chat is dead to me I guess.

I guess there's jabber/XMPP I think but no one uses that either.

Shame. Winamp was good, lost some functionality - most media players are fucking terrible. Messaging is pretty much dead unless you use twitter or facebook which are fucking horrible. Messaging is dead. Web browsers are going to shit and becoming fucking turds. Video players haven't been improving - though there's VLC. People avoid email, shit like file transferring is a fucking pain now outside of making a torrent. Internet is about to get hit tariffs and antiprivacy from ISPs because anti-NN. TV goes through the same shit as ISPs, radio is dogshit. Retailers are dying to online shopping. So basically there's no fallback to shit shit that actually works anymore and shit just continues to get worse and break.

Feels like the world is just fucking dying and no one cares. I should really stock supplies to build an out bag.

That's why IRC is still around. It's dated, but it just werks. Either way, I agree with you there is a lot of shit out today, but it is mostly that we just aren't the intended audience anymore. Remember old internet everyone was mostly a geek that went beyond some browsing and maybe AIM, hence the software reflected that. Now most software is written for profit and the target audience is Stacy, Chad and Aunt Lily.

>stileproject
Oy vey dude, I spent quote some time there
>porn
>lewd browser games

Those were the days

Any BBS fags? That was a bit before me, but I logged on to a few that were left up for nostalgia purposes to play the games.

It was a lot harder to find porn back then. I mean, not THAT hard, but, certainly not like going on Sup Forums now or something.

True, i think stileproject linked to a site that had softcore images. I may be misremembering and mixing up sites. I remember that i stopped using SP when they sold the site or whatever and the layout got changed and most content was gone. Never went there again after that.

This seems like an interesting story about acronyms, one never really find many of those around. Could you please elaborate?

gAIM was the Linux client.

Thank you for your reply user, alas it wasn't such an interesting story about acronyms after all, my newfound quest continues. Maybe I'll try /k/ those dudes love acronyms.
