Eh, it was only inevitable. Smartphones already play music so for most people there's no reason for a dedicated music device. I wish Apple would make another iPod classic, though that'll never happen given that the future of music is streaming.

I didn't say anything about its audio quality. Apple has been starting to use decent to good amps for a while. The UI is trash for a music player compared to the old iPods, on top of that they force you to use ALAC if you want high quality.
Download an app that plays FLAC off the App Store. For example, JetAudio or VLC

I bought an iPod Touch 4th gen around when it released and two years later it got deprecated in updates. Battery life was literally 10 minutes. Awful device.

iPods are actually pretty nice, especially if you like to fuck around with your stuff. I'm upgrading mine from a 30GB HDD to 128GB SD card, upgrading the battery, and running line-out to a Fiio headphone amp wired to the headphone jack
