Dunno. Maybe I'm too used to my HD600, but they sounded dull to be honest. Maybe for someone who hasn't heard anything beyond that price point it will do a fine job.

Power-wise, no. They're very efficient.
However, shitty high impedance outputs typically found in computers will interact badly with the impedance vs frequency spikes these headphones do have, so you'll still benefit considerably from an amp, which you can get at any time later.

What is your current source?

DT990 are vshaped (bass+treble cannons). The treble specifically is so boosted it's offensive.
The only beyers worth a glance are the DT880. These are a decent option if for whatever reason you can't yet afford the HD600, but I'd honestly look at used HD600 before going that route.

I never bought it for my headphones, since I was doing just fine without it. It was to amp my mic so there would be less noise.

Yeah, and it probably does the job. It's just not a headphone interface, so it doesn't count as better as your motherboard, which might actually have a headphone amp built in if it's recent enough.
Else look into "HiFime Sabre 9018 USB DAC" or just grab the $99 Magni 3 and call it a day.
