Can someone explain to me why people are paying >$120 for the 2017 version of this when you can get legitimate versions of the 2016 version from US ebay sellers for around $60? The speed difference is only 5-10 MB read and write, so why?

You pretty much explained why.
I mean does that matter to most people? You'd have to constantly be writing large files for extended amounts of time and I feel like applies to not many.
Most people buying sd cards don't know what they are worth so prices are often bizarre.
Applies to tons if you're using a laptop/tablet hybrid where your SD holds more than internal
If you can pack so much data in so little thing why ssd's are so big?
1. To fit with current form factors. Plenty of decently small SSDs exist. See: m.2 form factor
2. Different underlying technology than SD cards. The chips used for storage are different, as is the protocol and a whole lot more. They're considerably more complex.
oh great point I totally forgot about those. I was only thinking of Smartphone and Switch usage

>eBay
>legitimate
Pick one
its totally legit, I swear
Isn't buying from a US seller more likely to be legitimate?
>buy from "US" reseller
>track package
>current location: singapore
also SD data are more volatile and they get corrupted after 6 months of no use
Never Samsung SD again. Bought an Evo 64 GB, went a couple of times to take some photos and it cucked itself.
People are probably using these in high definition cameras where the read and writes do matter by the second
this has never happened to me
to the degree that what was considered top in 2016 is worth less than half in 2017?
Worthless no. But if you can capture more fps it may be useful to some photographers / film makers.
To most people? No. And that's why most people don't buy it, dumbass. To some people? Yes. Yes it does. It directly impacts the performance of certain devices, especially the expensive cameras that hipster faggots love to buy.

I'm surprised more people here don't understand this.
Actually nevermind, I forgot that 2/3 of the users on here are like 78 IQ, or a fanboy that just gets butthurt over everypost that doesn't suck the dick of their favorite OS.
Most people who are buying these are doing exactly that, putting them into 4K cams.
Toshiba's are cheaper and write at like 70mb/s. I was pretty disappointed by Samsung desu.
>using microsd with any half decent photography equipment
Fucking no
it's just price gauging
