>inb4 muh games
Steam has a huge library of games that work on GNU/Linux, and you can run many more with Wine
>inb4 muh photoshop
You can now run CS5 with Wine
Why are you still using Windows?
I run Windows on my laptop, but gentoo on my desktop. Reason being that the laptop is a shitty HP with a shitty AMD APU, with zero linux support. Screen always goes black unless I run in low-graphics mode. The fglrx drivers I needed that actually worked are now deprecated in favor of the open-source amdgpu that doesn't work. Oh well. Next time I'll just get a macbook
>you can run X with wine
yeah, no. been there before, nothing worked. went back. end of story
>Steam has a huge library of games that work on GNU/Linux, and you can run many more with Wine
I lost like 20-30% FPS on counter strike by just downloading it from steam and over 50% on league by running it through wine (and it was a bit of a pain to get running in the first place)
isn't that the MSN Messenger logo not windows?
Because the shit doesn't work out of the box. You have to manually fuck with every single driver and good fucking luck if you're a normie with zero coding knowledge. If something goes wrong, your only support are neckbeards who are awful at properly explaining anything. Its a well known fact that programmers are the worst when it comes to writing instructions on how to do shit.
When you fix the problem of nothing working out of the box and actually get reliable tech support that can explain shit so normies can understand it, then you'll have people switching to Linux. No one fucking likes Microsoft, but there are just no alternatives that have both the software support, tech support and ease of use that normies can use.
>coding knowledge
I think you're the normie, user. Typing commands into a terminal is not "coding."
Most people either don't know that Linux distros are a viable alternative to how they use their PC's, see a reason to switch when what they have already works for them, or have the technical know how to install it.
One or more of these can apply.
>Its a well known fact that programmers are the worst when it comes to writing instructions on how to do shit.
Bullshit. RTFM is a meme for a reason.
What APU are you using?
A10-8700P APU
>If something goes wrong, your only support are neckbeards who are awful at properly explaining anything.
Untrue. Neckbeards will tell you exactly how to fix something. Normies can't explain shit
> Why are you still using Windows?
Because I can. It does all I want and need. Why do >(You) care about it so much?
I use the A6-3410MX apu. AMDGPU doesn't work on that, but the open source radeon driver works flawlessly.
Because I'm not going to hack together a shitty solution for all the programs I use when I can run them natively on Windows. I am thinking about building a Hackintosh though.
to spark discussion, of course
when you use gnu + loonix, you realize Windows IS the shitty solution.
Because I have a job
Why exactly would I use Linux over Windows? Making something less user friendly so you feel elite when you use it doesn't make it better. Windows does everything Linux does in an easy and intuitive way, and much more. There isn't a single reason to use Linux
>CS5 bug is fixed
>OMG I BETTER SHILL LINUX
ye no literally nothing has changed.
kek.
CS5.
kekkers.
>You can now run CS5 with Wine
CS 5.5 or 6.0 is actually the cut-off point for me. Content-aware fills introduced in 5.5 save me so much time.
Also good luck running Premiere Pro, After Effects, PaintTool Sai, FL Studio, etc.
Windows is trash. It gets in your way, in a way that you can't understand until you use literally anything that isn't Windows. I can't ever go back to that garbage. I will buy a mac before I reinstall Windows.
Explaining how to fix something is two parts. First having the technical know how to do it, which neckbeards undoubtedly know. Second is actually being able to convey that technical knowledge in a way that others can understand. The problem I've encountered with these people is that they have unrealistic expectations of everyone else to already understand the basics of how Linux works. So a "normie" coming into Linux with zero knowledge or know how isn't going to know a thing about the problem or even remotely how to fix it. So the neckbeard tells the normie how to fix it, but the normie has no clue what the neckbeard is talking about. Then the neckbeard gets this smug sense of superiority and tells the normie to "figure it out, I did" like this is supposed to spur the normie into putting effort into it. So then the normie uninstalls Linux and reinstalls Windows because on Windows you'll never have these kinds of problems in the first place.
This is why Linux only has a tiny market share.
Because my EFI partition is fucked somehow and I can't figure out how to unfuck it. I don't know what was wrong with BIOS or why they had to "fix" it.
I use windows because I fucking can and you can't do shit about you fucking commie faggot.
Visual Studio and games.
because i've always had and everything just werks
why do you use linux ? to have 3 things + 1 anime image always opened and perfectly aligned on your screen ?
>muh privacy
says the guy with 20 browser addons
theres no privacy on the internet
Linux isn't for everyone. It require you to have a DIY personality, and to learn new things. Most people don't have this, and that's fine. But if you do, and you take the time to learn new things, you'll be rewarded with customization and freedom.
Like I said though, not for everyone. Some people just want to play videogames and watch youtube videos, and that's fine. The other stuff is unnecessary for them. I love Linux, but I'm not autistic enough to think that it's for everyone.
>Why exactly would I use Linux over Windows?
If you don't see a reason to, then no, you don't need it
>Making something less user friendly so you feel elite when you use it doesn't make it better.
desu it's not any less user friendly. It's just different than windows
>Windows does everything Linux does in an easy and intuitive way, and much more.
Can't agree on that. I use Windows and Linux, and I can't think of anything that is directly un-intuitive in Linux. I don't know how to remotely login to another windows pc and run commands like SSH on Linux, or view the output of a file, sort the output and search for things in it. On linux, an obvious solution would be cat | grep | sort. The registry on windows is complete trash.
>There isn't a single reason to use Linux
That totally depends on the person. You don't - ok.
It also struck me that I don't know of any equivalent to the Arch Linux wiki, that is for Windows.
>any equivalent to the Arch Linux wiki, that is for Windows
this. most helpful source for how-to. amazing what you can do when you actually take the time to read instructions.
Bluestacks.
Genymotion, Anbox, Android SDK, and Android in VirtualBox can't install ARM APK's on Ubuntu for some reason.
>why do you use linux?
Part of it is just snobbery, and I admit to the crime in this case. :^)
Nevertheless, a better reason is that Unix systems are much more flexible, suitable for "builders," a description that should fit CS students. For instance, the fact that one can put together a lot of little shell commands to automate a tedious task should be something CS students should relish, whereas ordinary Windows users just want a turnkey system.
I'm a big R user, and there many R libraries that work on Unix (Linux, Mac) but not on Windows, due to limitations on Windows processes.
Finally, like it or not, Unix is the framework used in most of the famous tech industry firms. It's just like going to Italy -- you'll be better off if you know Italian. :^)
>and everything just werks
Right? I'm not surprised people encounter issues, I mean when you have that many devices out there things are bound to act up, but I've never faced them. They are always minor issues per program but people around here are constantly acting as if every single installation is going to face every single issue 100% of the time.
Never had to pay for it either so I don't understand cost issues, like just head to college/uni, your tuition money is paying for it anyways so might as well snatch it up.
Because there's no incentive to use Linux.
No advantage.
>Steam has a huge library of games that work on GNU/Linux, and you can run many more with Wine
Not some of the ones I happen to like
>You can now run CS5 with Wine
Last time I tried Illustrator would crash once and never open again
I'm never going to switch my desktop from Windows so I've tried various laptops over the last 10 years.
The laptop I got in 2007 didn't recognize the audio chipset or the wifi chipset.
The laptop I got in 2011 would not output video to the screen, but output just fine over VGA.
Current laptop I got in 2016 and if I put the laptop to sleep by closing it, the networking service or interface must be restarted for wifi to work again.
yep, Linux will never be good for normies and their laptops. It just doesn't work out of the box.
Now on desktop, I've never been comfier.
Counter Strike has a shitty linux version, some games runs better on Linux if they are recents. Dota 2 runs perfectly on linux because it use Vulkan.
If >50% of the stuff you do on a computer rely on using the other OS, you might just install the other OS. It's just that simple.
>inb4 using a vm or wine
Why waste time on having to make that work and configuring it when instead you can natively do it.
i got a mac and its gr3at never going back to windows again
The only reason I have to use loonix over it is KDE and better font rendering. It's too bad that's not enough for me.
>Linux has only a tiny marketshare
>dominates almost everything except desktop
>tiny marketshare
I work with graphics/video software, and it works poorly on Linux. I actually used to run macOS, but it is heading in a very depressing direction, plus there is no good hardware available.
>You have to manually fuck with every single driver
t. Someone who has never actually used Linux.
Protip: 99% of shit just works out of the box.
What is better for visual novels? Wine or QEMU?
Wine is fine, I'm sure
This. I've installed Linux two months ago. Everything works out of the box. Having to install drivers on Windows after this comfines is pretty annoying.
>writing instructions
Do you even know what programming is?
>poorfag can only run linux
>posts on /g just to improve his ego
yeah no go fuck yourself
>Assuming someone's income based on their OS of choice
See Everything but Da Vinci Resolve has shit performance; coincidentally, Resolve is available for Linux too, because Windows has shit limitations for GPUs
>Protip: 99%
I love how you have to use 99% because you know for a fact you experienced problems but still want to pretend like it's been completely smooth.
Turns out, sound and printers are still 2 complex 4 linux.
Shut the hell up.
Windows is hands down the BEST OS type to have, namely Windows 10, which is bug free and 100% secure.
Some $30 printer I got from office Depot works with my Linux system just fine. I can also hear sound and have been able to do so for over half a decade. Please stop using arguments from the 90s
>good fucking luck if you're a normie with zero coding knowledge
>he's on Sup Forums with zero coding knowledge
back to your containment board
Sound in this context is more than just "hearing sound" you barbarian. Of course if you buy a printer that you know works with linux, it should fucking work. But I'm not going to throw out a perfectly good printer just to get one that works with linux without tweaking shit.
Please stop handwaving problems linux on the desktop has. This board is spammed with problems windows and macos has but anytime problems with linux are brought up you guys act as if everything is flawless when you are very well aware of the simple fact your experience has been anything but smooth.
Oh and keep an eye out for those vulns babe, hopefully omgubuntu is up to date with them ;)
Because I'm not a poor third-worlder, next question.
>Having to install drivers on Windows
This has been a thing of the past since Windows 8 was released.
I didn't buy it with the intent on it working with Linux, it just happened to do so. I put installed Linux after the fact. Linux does have problems, but drivers are largely not one of them.
>implying that Linux systems don't get security updates the day of, or the day after, they're discovered
>krack is released to public
>linux gets an update the same day
>meanwhile windows was only partially affected and received the patch two weeks earlier
>Windows hides the knowledge of the vulnerability until it gets made public
>this is okay
PuTTY and an X server gives me the best of both worlds.
Bullshit user, you either have never installed a distro or at least haven't tried one in the past 20 years. Used Mint for about 3 months before GTA V came out and I decided to bend right back over to the Microsoft overlord in the name of muh pc mustard race.
The experience was much more preferable to me personally and honestly, its system of using repos for apps is much better for your basic users. The only reason it hasn't taken off more with the public is they are used to installing whatever retarded shit they want.. and directx...
To be fair, disclosing a vulnerability to the public also discloses that fact to bad actors who will try to take advantage. The best move on their part is to try to patch it as soon as possible.
How is wine working with DX11 games at the moment?
i had korora on a usb on my old think pad t420, dont know how it would be on my new laptop, might install that or react os. Forgot to mention react os is still a thing.
>cat | grep
UUOC

>Uses the same OS that villages in Africa use
>Guise it's better I swear
This is how dumb you are.
>63920923
>Implying implications
this is how dumb you are.
X and wayland are shit
>Because the shit doesn't work out of the box. You have to manually fuck with every single driver and good fucking luck
Your describing Windows not Linux
Neckbeards don't actually know how Linux works or how to make it work. They just fuck with config files and search google until they get it to work by trial and error, and then feel like leet hackers for getting wireless to work. Fuck your stupid shit and fuck your /etc/wpa_supplicant_up_my_ass.
And Linux fonts are hideous.
I've had fewer driver problems with Linux than with Windows. Slashdot fucktards were gushing about Mint a while back so I tried it on one of my old laptops, it had a problem with wireless that I could only solve by downloading and compiling some alternate driver. The long-term solution was to use Xubuntu instead. It's just as easy to install as Mint and doesn't have any of the other stupid niggling issues (package name differences, the website getting fucking hacked to include compromised isos)
If I'd tried to install Win7 on these laptops I would have had to hunt down drivers and also deal with Windows Update randomly breaking. Linux just worked. Funny how things can change in 10 years.
>Why not just use linux, and then emulate windows to run your software?
Because that's fucking retarded
>Not finding reasonable alternatives to proprietary Windows software (aka malware) instead of being hard headed shit for brainses.
The absolute state of Sup Forums...
1) Windows it much better than even Ubuntu at just werking, which means Linux won't be popular anytime soon. As a wannabee programmer, I have to work with Windows more.
2) Steam does have a huge library of games that work on Linux, but these forks often suck, and so does Optimus support, I'm sick of manually switching between my video cards. Also, most games I personally like are not ported, and most likely will never be, not even on normie MacOSX.
3) Linux systems break all the time. It may be a bug, it may be just me forgetting to uncomment a line in a config file, it may be a poorly configured kernel, but no matter the cause it's extremely fucking annoying. Though I must say, I like that configuring the system and the behavior of low-level daemons is so much simpler than on Windows.
4) Hardware companies (especially Nvidia) often don't give two shits about Linux, the drivers are often buggy and not fully functional. There is no workaround for that, you'll just have cope with it or install often inferior open source drivers.
Have you actually tried wayland?
Is it better than X?
Comparing Wayland to X is like comparing the spunky new green as fuck guy to the old hardened 20 year industry professional.
He moves faster and is eager as shit but might run into a wall and fuck himself up from time to time.
Wine is shit.
* Need to run old stuff
* I dont need or want steam (and refuse to use in fact)
* There's alot of things that I use and need to use which dont have a linux version
drivers is another reason
I tried installing the ubuntu version that allows you to do so onto a thumb drive. It had the installer and the right file and everything. And it still wouldnt boot and properly load.
> the demo doesnt even work
> the load procedure was supposed to be foolproof
> reliability isnt my question, but I cant even get a taste of how it works because I cant load it up.
Thats another thing too is program compatibility. Just because someone else got it working doesn't mean that ill necessarily be able to.
I have an annoying tendency of following directions exactly and not ending up with the same success that somebody else had.
I cant take that chance.
>Hardware companies (especially Nvidia) often don't give two shits about Linux, the drivers are often buggy and not fully functional. There is no workaround for that, you'll just have cope with it or install often inferior open source drivers.
Translation:
>I have never used linux in my life
Only valid point is nvidia but if all drivers are as buggy as they are, then live CDs wouldn't be a thing.
Retards that complain about "muh drivers" are retards that have never used linux before.
No native Ms Office on Linux.
Document formatting became fucked up when saved in LibreOffice.
Save stuff you're working on in .odt format, or whatever open standard for your program, since any word processor can view those fine. If you're handing something in, export to PDF, which you should be doing regardless of your word processor of choice
>>I have never used linux in my life
4 months of Ubuntu + 2 years of Gentoo.
The issues with nvidia alone create massive butthurt. Other companies are not as much assholes as them, but still driver issues arise from time to time i.e. Realtek card readers, because there is little benefit in making normal drivers for what is basically a meme operating system on the desktop market.
i.e. => e.g.
Damn latin abbreviations, I never get them right.
Because I'm too lazy to switch operating systems and my install of Windows has been reliable.
Why are you still using loonix?
I've tried ubuntu, fedora, manjaro, and solus. In every case I had issues with sound. It randomly flickers between my chosen sound output (a digital output) and a non-existent headphone port and causes sound cutting in and out. I have spent a few hours over the years trying to get it to work. I think I'm done trying until I get new hardware.
as someone that spent 4 hours figuring out how windows update rolls back drivers u installed will tell u: nope. Windows update made installing drivers even more of a shitshow.
1) I play video games, while a lot of games are linux compatible, a lot are not.
2) I have a job, and I need a lot of Windows-only tools and softs. The most important being Office.
The day I'll become jobless and with too much of a depression to play video games, I'll switch to Linux.
I can tell you haven't tried to use anything on wine other than notepad.
