You're not wrong, I really do

I like the DE w/o the apps. I don't use them myself. I found a way to get the former without the "bloat."

What do you do, just uninstall all GNOME apps?

Enlighten me senpai

it's pretty comfy. i don't like it's implementation in ubuntu 17.10, though. the superkey works different than 16.04. LTS might smooth out the interface.

yeah It's worse in ubuntu 17.10 than it is in gnome 17.04. The dock is just a worse version of dash to dock and is annoying to disable

No. I installed Fedora Linux minimal and then "gnome-shell" package after getting networking on my laptop.

I get intimidated when I try doing it the way you describe because it lists a whole bunch of dependencies and I don't know if one missing package would interfere with usability.

It's easier to start with a clean slate and just install what I need.

You're wrong, I really don't.
sage&hide

I did it on Fedora and it might be different for your distro. I just did a net install of the OS and then installed gnome-shell. That basically gives you just the DE. Mind you that you might have to install xinit and the x server separately. Also, I needed to install the input drivers, graphics drivers, and some library package that I can't remember off the top of my head. If you try to startx gnome-session and it fails you should see an error message that a lib* was not found.

Just make sure what I say transfers over to your distro of choice.

I like GNOME 2

I liked it better when the elements whereby so big. Who needs 100PX tall window decoration? It looks like a child's toy.

Antergos gnome feels like the future

I'm using centOS so it should work

Is it comfy? I thought about going back to Antergos to try it out.

Did. Switched to xfce4 anyway.

looks too much like android and IOS. Its clearly a mobile UI.

No. Every time I use it Ifeel like I'm using one of these cheap Android tablets.

I do like GNOME but it performs like shit on my T420 for some reason so I use MATE instead.

> Updates are ready for your computer
> All of your extensions have broken :^)

Gnome is trash

XFCE is my personal favorite.

Zorin OS uses it so yeah i do

I'll be honest, I do

>apps

>Implying that GNOME applications should be given the honor of being called an application

dwm the windw manager

fewer bugs,
better performance,
lower memory footprint,
better maintainability,
higher scalability,
longer software lifetime,
and prompt delivery

> using a DE

Literally every commercial operating system calls application "apps", stop being a cunt granpa.

stop being such sheep. im trying to help you guys. Fucking use i3 or dwm.

Sorry, I prefer my windows stacked. My laptop's monitor is not that big.

some people prefer using their brain to get good at the important skills like programming rather then fucking around with i3 to look like a 1337 haxor

>using the smiley with the carat nose

Sincerely, I don't give a flying fuck about GNOME

with dwm, there is no fucking ricing. I don't even rice my dwm. The ricefags make i3 users look like faggots sometimes. I'd suggest you try dwm.

if something isnt installed with gnome shell, it isn't needed

I used it for a couple of years but switched to KDE Plasma on a fresh Debian install. They both have their ups and downs.

I like Gnome's more floaty feel but it's not as easy to customize (especially Gnome3) and has a larger memory profile than KDE. Also I installed Gnome from LXDE (Lubuntu) and the font rendering among other cosmetics were pretty fucked

can you post yor wp?
here's another in exchange

Here user

thanks user.
have another wp for being good

no

It's okay, I'm not picky. I do use it.

It's alright but I don't use it as my daily driver

I don't like how everything looks saturated by default, especially the app launcher that takes up the entire screen and has those slow animations.
I wish it would be more like elementary, with everything further apart from each other and with the app launcher showing in a small window

Honestly I do. Because I'm not a useless NEET and GNOME jus werks. I've never fell for the tilling WM meme but I love how most things in GNOME can be done by easily remembered key shorcuts. But that doesn't mean I am not mad at retarded nu-developers removing good features out of it.

Last time I tried KMail and KDE PIM in general it was shit compared to Evolution. At least in this round GNOME apps wins.

>firefox

>installed arch with i3 on laptop
>spent 2 days trying to get the brightness to work
>failed
It's hard being a brainlet. How do I debloat gnome? My machine is slow af.

Not at all. I am sticking to unity.

Yes.

I'm using Gnome on Antergos and it's butter. Can't complain.

I'm trying to like it and give it a proper go, but when I need to be producitve I just end up copying everything from Unity.

Using it vanilla is a completely confusing mess and I can't get used to it at all. Especially the disabled system tray, too many applications I use rely on notification icons.

>ugly tilings
>stupid all-in-one-space menu with cut names
>only .desktop entries, makes it hard to add CLI software in there
>muh plugins, usually broken, do way too much and badly, have collisions when combined
>zero customization otherwise, writing plugins is not easy for simple tasks
>GNOME store is crap
>MASSIVE window borders
>thumbnailer and file indexer sometimes run on 100% of core for ages after cloning git repo, kills my 2 core machine
>many gnome software is limited crap
>discontinued text editor you have to be kidding me
>impossible to statically link libraries everywhere
But everyone ships it. Freedesktop.org fiesta.

Daily reminder that tails bug tracker is hosted in riseup too

It's fine... It helps me access my porn adequately.

Yeah, because other DEs suck

When I go to the download page, it says that it's currently discouraged due to the Lenovo laptops issue. Is it really such a big deal or?

I'm more of a KDE guy myself.

is weston a decent compositor yet? I'd use XFCE + Weston if that was possible

Gnome, GTK, and Red Hat are a vile cancer in Linux that needs to be cleansed.

igurublog.wordpress.com/2012/11/05/gnome-et-al-rotting-in-threes/

GTK will die when Budgie 11 releases completely rewritten in QT with full hidpi support

Can't wait.

I'm glad people are finally starting to wake up and switch to Qt. There are still people out there that think GTK is "the native Linux toolkit" when it's really just the Gnome Toolkit now.

I do :D
It doesn't get comfier than Ubuntu Gnome 16.04

/thread

I'm actually on KDE myself.

What's the upside to dwm if you can't rice?

me too

The actual problem that i got with GNOME is the look like a fuckin smartphone and apps directory, i prefer the classic menu.

Also KDE is comfy

whats that app under spotify?

I like being able to flick my mouse to the corner and seeing all of my OPEN applications layed out on my desk.

How tho?

It's a GUI Git client
gitkraken.com

>too autistic to get memes.

I like you man don't change

It didn't just disappear from existence. There are people still using KDE3.

I don't. It's slow as fuck

I meant where to dl, not how in general. I looked in the past and was unsuccessful. I'm brainlet tho.

riseup.net/es/about-us

It's still in the ubuntu repos at least. There have been talks about an unofficial ubuntu unity spin for 18.04
It will probably get a few autists maintaining it like trinity (kde3 has)

Keep using ubuntu 16.04 lts until some autists make a unity version of more recent releases.

> daily reminder

You CAN rice it, but you don’t really need to.

If you’re just looking for productivity, you can keep the normal config and go on with your life, maybe changing the bar output or whatever.

But if you like to rice, DWM is quite riceable and fun ^.^

...

yes

tbqh gnome is at the very bottom of my de/wm list.
Fuck gnome. It's ugly clunky dumbed down shit.

I do but it also feels bloat

Thanks for the reply m8, I'll give it a go tonight

It would be nearly perf without the bloat
It's only clunky if you're hardwarelet tbqh

No, I don't.

Also what is with this activities nonsense, why do Gnome and KDE try to sludge this stupid pile of shit idea that no one actually wants and has essentially 0 actual use cases into everything?

If you're talking about the activities button you can remove it with shell a extension

And if they didn't remove basic features like tray icons just because they feel like they are ""legacy""

Looks like dog shit

yes, I do like gnome 2
gnome 3 made me switch to xfce
and you know what? it's better

yeah it's a bigger issue for KDE though I believe you can more or less remove it now (after a fucking decade). But the point is, why? Why do they have such a hard-on for this retarded bullshit?

THIS genius hacker man uses gnome. It's obvious it's the best.

I can't answer that, but I agree, I always remove it

It has a couple of good ideas however they fuck it all up by constantly removing features, having shit apps and writing the whole thing in JS making it slow and resource heavy as shit.
I wouldn't give a shit about all of this if they didn't affect GTK which is used by other desktops.

You can add try icons with a shell extension I believe

I haven't used anything besides GNOME and i3 in a while, is there a DE where I can enable corner hotspots to show all of my open applications like in GNOME? That's one of my favorite features.

KDE has that by default just like Gnome.

It's not a great desktop if you need third party extensions for basic features that many programs require.
