Redpill me on this distro
Redpills only happen in Sup Forums
Also if you're too lazy/stupid to spend 2 minutes googling, then it's not the distro for you
I really do not understand what these people have against dependency resolution in package managers.
It has it's own religion.
I realize I could have jewgled this, but I wanted to make a thread to hear anons opinions on it.
I guess if that's a problem, we could just go back to making threads about net neutrality for the ten-millionth time.
sounds kinda gay
>anything but Arch
dropped
b-but thats just yer opinion maaaaan
muh dependency resolution
No SystemDick
Doesn't get in your way
Just works. If you can't use it, then you're fucking dumb
>No systemdick
me likey
>>Doesn't get in your way
failing to do something that's easy for a computer but annoying for a human (like, say, dependency resolution) qualifies as "getting in my way" in my book. You can get in my way by being overly helpful, but you can also get in my way by not being helpful enough.
there are third party tools that do dependency resolution if you really want that
Ok so we have confirmed that it's a poettering-free distro that has a package manager and dependency resolution (the latter two things I wasn't sure it actually had.)
What else? What sets this apart from the rest of the crowd?
Best linux.
But the problem is that it's still a linux distro.
Use *BSD instead.
pkgtool is the default package manager available, and you can also add/remove packages with commands like installpkg and removepkg , also make your own with makepkg. There are also slackbuilds that compiles and makes packages for you.
Other thing that sets Slackware apart from other distros, it does not utilize PAM , technically is the oldest surviving distro that isn't original - based off of SLS Linux (google it).
It has been my main OS for about a year.
simple, stable, don't hold your hand, has a nice book teaching the ways of linux, has a very nice community in linuxquestions.
this. search about church of the subgenius
before Slackware i've used for about 2 years. AUR been the most cause of using, I quit after arguments against systemd made some sense to me.
partially this. I go by the fact that If i am installing something i SHOULD know what
i am installing and what might cause in my system. besides that, slackbuilds are very nice.
this. slapt-get if i recall. I use sbopkg cause it is less harmful.
the ONLY aspect undesirable of Slackware imo is that with a full installation you'll have many packages that you won't use, compared to gentoo/arch.
>What sets this apart from the rest of the crowd?
Unwavering stability.
Is it stability as in stabiltiy,
or is it stability as in """stability""" as in "our packages are horrifyingly outdated"?
I've been using Slackware for about 4 years. Best distro. I've been tempted to distro hop a multitude of times but every time I went back. Keeps me productive and taught me not to distro hop.
Arch is literally the worst fucking distro ever made. I'd rather use Hannah Montana Linux then be an Archfaggot. I typically never care what OS people use as long as they're happy, but you're a prime example of why our kind should be crucified upside down in the dumpster fires of Gehenna.
The former. If you absolutely NEED a newer version of something you can get it via the package manager.
>The former. If you absolutely NEED a newer version of something you can get it via the package manager.
this or you can get a SlackBuild for an outdated version and replace your own version.
It's even better with new versions than most distros, since you're handling your own dependencies most of the time there's nothing to break when you run a nightly github branch of something. No need to fight with your package manager to recognize that YES you already PROVIDED that it's just not in their system. You won't be pulling in all the dependencies automatically but nothing will be orphaned automatically either.
It's linux.
>arch
Your shitty riced screen doesn't make you look like a hacker. And aside from being able to do that, it's shit. It's babby's first scriptkiddy OS.
>fuck linux
>use this hobby OS that can't run shit a normal person would want to run on it
Gr8 b8. Unless he's a computer scientist or a hobbyist any BSD is fucking worthless. Windows has the convenience, linux has the freedom and control, BSD doesn't have shit and sucks at both.
fuck this faggot above me
Use openbsd instead
fuck this faggot above me
use guixsd instead
yes
There is nothing wrong with Arch. Pacman does what it's designed to and the Arch base is well maintained on the core repositories. It's one of the better bleeding edge distros regardless of the "elitist hacker/rice lord" culture that may or may not come with it. Besides, there's nothing wrong with customization or striving for UI uniformity. Linux DEs and WMs can definitely be considered lacking compared to other operating systems in the "looks department" if everyone just stuck to the defaults.
>linux has the freedom
>GPL
kek
>What sets this apart from the rest of the crowd?
It's Pat Volkerding himself. Benevolent Dictator for Life. The Man. He has an ideal for an OS and Slackware is its implementation. If his vision matches yours, you will love slackware. It will just work.
I want to point out that you can compile and install your own trees of sofware under your home directory. You don't have to have an official package and let it touch any part of your distro. Want a newer gcc? great. do it for yourself. Then if you are smart and keep /home on a separate raid/volume you can uplug that and blow away & update your entire system, remount /home and be back in business. (maybe type make a few times due to library changes)
People here seem to think apt-get install and 'blessed' lists of packages are required. It's not. A whole lot of stuff just takes ./configure with a --prefix then make & make install. Modern software seems to be entering a bit of dependency hell that makes this harder, but do you really want to depend on such software anyway.
Slackware gives you a rock solid base to build on. Nothing is hidden. /etc/ and /etc/rc.d are open books. There are no surprises, and that is excellent in this age of exploding complexity for no good reason.
Just use Void Linux instead of theses shitty distros (arch and slackware).
>but how will people know I'm a super special snowflake unless I use weird shit like slackware and program in C from the terminal inside my riced tiling window manager?
you let strangers see what you are working on?
Yes I did once when I left my house accidentally.
dangerous.
I saw Slackware in Mr Robot and the desktop background when Elliot used it looked cool.
Is it a good operating system? I want to try it. How do I install a Linux operating system?
Is there a guide for how to make your arch look like this?
I fucked around with it a bit before but never got very far
Isn't this what gentoo does for you but with better customizability and configuration? I know it's not all in the /home directory but still...
Slackware requires pulseaudio, fuck that
14.1 does not as i recall
search around about wm, gtk/qt theme, DE and its configuration files and surely you'll learn how to rice your distro.
I love Slackware, its the best distro there is
slackware does not require pulseaudio,
some audio and video apps require pulseaudio
dont be a dolt
My high school uses it
I'm pretty sure that's the same reason why OP came here and asked.
>nice bait though
Nah the reason I made it was to see how it might compare to other shit. I currently use Void
>You could've put that in the OP
But I sit corrected none the less.
Oh fuck this, I use it due to its stability, now people are gonna say "wow he uses slackware cause he saw it in a hacker film, what a loser"
Fucking normies ruining everything!
The repills cause brain damage.
What programs require pulseaudio? Also aren’t all programs that come with slackware compiled to require pulseaudio?
Arch is more than a bunch of software. It's a way of thinking and doing. Arch is a philosophy, there is an Arch way of doing things and that will impact your experience as a user. When installing the main Arch, you get a system that is built by you for you. That what makes Arch different from other GNU/Linux sisters.
If you're going for arch, at least use MAN-jaro. If you're going for 'built by you for you' do the Gentoo.
>If you're a wizzard cast Source Mage GNU/Linux
iirc bluez requires it and is what forced the change. Also iirc the rc.pulseaudio is not executable by default.
i know it's tedious but i usually go through every package and unmark about 50% during installation
>manual dependency resolution
I guess it’s fun to use if you want to know what using Linux in the 90’s was like
The laziest distro ever.
Gentoo and Arch at least focus on being easily configurable.
Slackware is just some shit thrown together.
~25 years of takin' it easy
>What else? What sets this apart from the rest of the crowd?
no pulseau-
never mind
unfortunately pulseaudio has crept into a lot of distros, and being required as a dependency to some programs.
SystemD is trying to do the same shit, by trying to be a required dependency for some shit, like GNOME - its worse when devs of other projects like GNOME, etc just gladly bend over and accept the SystemD (pun intended).
SystemD like Pulseaudio , is ruining everything. ALSA for sound worked just fine , and SysV / BSD-Style rc is just fine. Ergo Pulseaudio and SystemD offer no advantage and just fuck everything up
I used it for 15 years (since 1995) I still miss it but I wanted a more modern pkg system and more up-to-date programs...
Great selection of "Orthodox" or "Canonical" programs. (i.e. "of course we have mutt, vim, tin, mc, screen, emacs, gcc etc in our base install. You're an adult with things to do, right?)
