Recommended IBM models: X60, X61, T60, T61, 860, Transnote, PC110
Recommended modern models: X220 - 12", 768p, cheap and light T420 - 14", 900p, widely available, socketed CPU, Ivy Bridge installable w/ Coreboot W520 - 15", 1080p, Desktop Replacement, 32GB RAM on quadcore models, USB 3.0 T440p, T540p, W540 - last ThinkPads to have replaceable CPUs, IPS displays available, chiclet P series - reminiscent to old build quality, top-of-the-line specs, better than most current mobile workstations, but very expensive
Why ThinkPad? >Used machines are plentiful and cheap >Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet >Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels >Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models >Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop >Easy to repair (most models), upgrade & maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model, spare parts easy & cheap to obtain >The best TrackPoint, great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad >Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support
>ywn be able to buy a computer with that form factor, but with modern specs

Does t440 = t440p as far as the replaceable CPU?
What are the major differences between t440 and t440p?
Angel Bell
he's right, you have some shit taste.
Josiah Foster
everything, google it
the t440p is bretty gud but the t440 is a piece of shit, the p changes everything

I recently broke my laptop in university. I collect rocks, and one fell off my shelf, and hit my laptop keyboard. Its broken now.
Anyway, Ive had my eye on thinkpads for some time now. I want to get a workstation, the weight of it dont make me no difference, and bulky laptops are more attractive to me, as well as more comfortable to hold and travel.
Ill be using mine for Sup Forums, adobe software, like photoshop, illustrate, and after effects. Use it for matlab in my phys course and MS office as well. And an sperg dream of mine, is to learn blender, so I can make porn.
I like the P50's, and I've seen some with M1000m GPU's (I think), and intel i7 6th gen which seem pretty good. They're in my price range of 700-1000 pounds. or about below 1300 dollars.
What laptop model would you guys recommend?
Kevin Bell

who else here /quad core t420/

what processor does yours have? I have a dual core i7 in my t520 and the battery life is still shite
Caleb Williams
because all laptops run at 100% cpu on every moment right
Ryan Wright
you can have an eGPU setup though.
Charles Powell
any cheap reccomendation? also would that allow me to do high level gaming? yes i am a newfag

How do you like the quad-core w520?Thinking of picking one up.

Any 8GB RAM + 1080p budget ChinkPads? I'm currently looking for one, I love my T420 and all but I just want a 1080p display. Upgradeable RAM and caddy would both be a nice plus
Easton Howard
1080p display on a screen less than 21 inches is a meme
Joseph Ramirez
where do i buy a modded full hd i7 x220, im too much of a bitch to mod it myself.

It's alright. Build quality is a bit worse than T60p (shallower keyboard, slightly lower quality plastic on the case) but still much better than other laptops. GPU and CPU performance are good and there's no throttling, however the chips do get very hot under heavy load (85 to 90C for CPU and 80C GPU). I have the model with Quadro 2000M and 2,4GHz CPU, maybe the lower end ones run cooler. Idle temps are around 50C and the fan is barely audible. Cleaning the fan is a lot of work, have to remove lots of shit to get to it. The fullHD display has good color reproduction but is sadly TN and like all thinkpads of that era comes with horrible flickering (but bright) backlight by default, someone made a program to change the frequency of it though so it's less noticeable. Also mine has 2 subpixel errors, apparently common with this model. The sound chip sucks, frequencies below ~100Hz are missing The laptop is surprisingly light for a workstation, but the power brick is massive. If you get one make sure to install the latest BIOS updates, which fix issues with high latency when using the network card. Also turn off the Cstates and most other unnecessary power saving features as they too add latency
Oliver Sullivan
Theyre fucking shit after a few months though

Can x200 fast enough to run a windows vm in linux

coming up on 3 months and its been fairly consistent.
I guess time will tell.

I paid 19$ for a 6 cell and it died after 10 months. Currently using a 9 cell for about 3 months and it's already 4 hours per charge. Still cheaper than a original lenovo battery though.
Jordan Cox
Yeah, but it will suck for almost anything
Jonathan Price
it was only £15 for a 9 cell anyway.
getting 6 hours of max brightness, high performance use in windows with lenovo battery stretch thing.
linux is worse but i'm hoping debian + i3 will be better than manjaro is now

if i wanted to buy this screen for my x200: ebay.com/itm/112402385484 would it work out of the box and i'd just have to install it or would i need to buy a backlight inverter or something like that? keep in mind i have no idea how monitors work and i have severe aspergers, thanks
Dylan Bell
Would the X250 be fine as a replacement for a Macbook Air? If so, what's a good price for a used one?
Parker Cox
t520
Logan Morales
My X230 is slow as fuck sometimes and I'm web browsing with 4 or 5 tabs open. I thought it was overheating and throttling but temps seem normal. Do you guess see any other issues that might be causing bad performance?
Colton Bailey
I didn't see it in the OP but how are the t410s? One is for sale by me for $75
Logan Collins
if you're really tight for cash, you can get a x240 and replace the trackpad module with a replacement x250 version for ~30 bucks.
Grayson Thompson
>you can get a x240 and replace the trackpad module with a replacement x250 version for ~30 bucks That's only needed if you're a trackpoint fan, a macfag will probably like the shitty clickpad.
Jace Hernandez
Alright Sup Forums, what laptops or CPU/GPU you guys want me to do a pricing guide on for dankpads?
Get an X201 at least or X220 The slowdown not worth the classic aesthetics in 2018
Fair price, they use 1.8" SATA drives tho...
Aaron Fisher
I got a ThinkPad 25 and the screen is so shit despite being an IPS. Honestly, I can't stand it anymore. I already had to replace the panel on my X1 because it was so shit, and the TN on my T420 is beyond absolutely awful. I think this is it for me, lads. Gonna have to get an XPS 15 for my next laptop.
Nathaniel Sanchez
Lithuanian bro sent me the wrong hinges for my T400 :(

>Is there any software for a stress test? There are loads of stress test programs. OCCT, Prime95, AIDA64 to name a few.
But check the physical condition of the machine first and foremost. Ask the seller why he's selling, if he's ever had any issues with it, etc., keep in mind everything on it can be repaired or replaced but don't get ripped off if it's a fixer upper.

Well fug, just asked the seller for the pass and I’m covered by eBay, maybe l’ll get some money back or he’ll magically have it.

My T430 just had a startup beep and CMOS date and time error. After I changed it it started up fine. I got it on power cable with no battery inserted to make it lighter. I'm reading that this can indicate faulty CMOS battery and/or funky chipset. I've had it for 3/4ths of a year and it worked well enough so far. Did any of you have this error and did it go away as if it was a fluke?
Brandon Evans
About to buy my first thinkpad and cant decide which model to get. I know most of the parts can be replaced and upgraded especially for the t420 and t430s but i just want something that looks nice, works well and is under $300. Suggestions? Do i just go with the 420 and pretend im not bothered by the lack of usb 3.0?
Gavin Fisher
what is the proper way to configure this keyboard layout under windows 7? (thinkpad x200)

Highly doubtful What did you buy? They probably were able to boot to a USB/DVD and didn't think it through when testing bios.
A lot of consumers probably don't care.

oh nice. i like the build look of the t440p anyway. So whats the pros and cons for t420 vs t440p then?
Brayden Rogers
I chose the t440p because the stats were superior for the price point. The keyboard is chiclety compared to the t420 and the touchpad is inferior. That being said, I got used to the keys and the touchpad is replaceable with one with actual buttons. Also- screen is easily replaceable- next mod is a 1080p ips.
Isaiah Ward
>buy quad core >remove dual core >install quad core only experienced thinkpros can do this delicate procedure successfully though
Hunter Morales
>So whats the pros and cons for t420 vs t440p then? the t440p has a nice 1080p ips display instead of the abhorrent TN piece of shit they used as a display on the t420 for starters
Dylan Reyes
It had win7, appeared to be a recent, mostly clean install, they left all the Lenovo utilities and system updates in the downloads folder.
I’ll ask, can’t hurt much. It’s a 4gb model in decent condition, I’d rather work on it than send it back and buy again.
Christopher Wood
What should I do with the pcmcia slot on an x61t? I doubt it can do eGPU.
