>To old glories!
This is a depressing idea for a thread. Why not future glories? It's a bit unhealthy to live in the past is it not?

I think you got your replies mixed up
>How is it LESS depressing to think about a scant few years of American rule followed by the rise of the fucking Chinese? Because if you think the Chinese are going to replace the US and become the sole superpower you're pretty dumb
We're shifting from a uni-polar to multi-polar system which means more opportunities for countries like the UK than the post-WW2 (two superpowers) or post Cold War (one superpower) periods
How do you get off on the past anyway? That's just sad. Be proud of the past for sure but saying shit like "to old glories!" is fucking cringeworthy. If you only think your country was worth something in the past then it may as well not exist.

From reddit: >Actually, there was some interesting discussion on this subreddit and on wikipedia last time this $7.4 trillion valuation came up. The source turns out to be an incorrect calculation from an article in The Atlantic. The author took the price of a VOC stock certificate sold at auction (as a historical collector's item, see her citation) as the equivalent modern-day stock value and multiplied this by the original number of shares issued. This is, of course, not the right way to compute the historical net worth of the VOC in 21st century dollars. I'm not sure what the Dutch East India company's actual value was in today's money (or how you could even compute that accurately), but I do know that $7.4 trillion is wrong.
The Dutch are quite literally the most pathetic posters on Sup Forums. Not a single other flag craves for attention and compliments as much as you lads. It's embarrassing. Why do you want everybody to acknowledge you?

>I had the same question you did, so I looked around to see if I could figure out the present-day value of the Dutch guilder between 1600-1800 when the Dutch East India Company was in business. I found this site which has a conversion calculator that seems to be based on reliable secondary sources. Unfortunately, it converts guilders to 2013 Euros, so I used 1 EUR ~ 1.3 USD to convert to 2013 dollars. >I found that 1 fl. (1600) = 14.77 EUR (2013) = $19.20 USD (2013) and that 1 fl. (1800) = 6.95 EUR (2013) = $9.04 USD (2013). So the guilders used in the valuation of the Dutch East India Company would have a value in the range $9 - $20 USD. If the total value of the Company was 78 million guilders, then its value in today's dollars would be somewhere between $700 million and $1.6 billion, which is many orders of magnitude from the given valuation. Because the Dutch are arrogant cunts (even though apparently their culture looks down on boasting, which is nonsense because that's all they do) and they keep mentioning this obviously and hilariously false factoid. I don't understand how anybody with multiple brain cells would seriously buy the $78 trillion crap. It makes no sense at all, it's blatantly wrong.
