Ok my fellow Sup Forumseeks. What are some of your best Sup Forums horror or outrageous true stories? Something that would scare the shit out of the rest of us?
I'll start.
I started working at a local computer repair business back in August this year. One day my boss starts telling me this story of an elderly lady who brought in her PC back in January right in the middle of a very cold snap in our area. She said the computer just stopped working when she was in the middle of searching for recopies on Google and would not come back on. So my boss takes it in and looks at it a little later in the day. He hooks it all up and true enough the computer refuses to come on. So he opens it up to inspect it. The inside was a little dusty but nothing major, but there is a wisp of burnt metal that permeates out of the case. He suspects the PSU but sees no sign of damage to the the unit. He checks over all the cables and they're fine as well. As a last option he takes off the CPU cooler and BAM there it is, the CPU itself has a distinct brown burnt mark on it. The CPU had overheated and burnt out. He tests the CPU cooler on another computer and sees it runs fine, so what happened? Later that day the elderly lady comes back and he asks her if there had been any power surges in her house. She says no. He eventually asks her if she had set the computer near a heat source to which she responds "Of course! I didn't want my computer to freeze in this cold so I set my electric heater in front of it! I wanted to make sure it's batteries would start it up this morning." This confused the hell out of my boss. After a few more questions it turns out she thought that a computer started up and ran like a car and had batteries inside that kept it running. The power cord was only used to recharge the batteries.

Ex friend runs a computer shop that I use to help him with and help built up. He is an ex friend because he is a dumb ass that shouldn't own his own business. But he gets away with most of this shit because its a small city of 12,000ish population and because people are morons.
Used a sheet metal screw to mount a case fan into someones computer. He also used random ass screws in systems. Sells old parts as new parts. Says that graphic cards with more vram is better then anything else. Doesn't under stand why some graphics cards won't work with some systems (he didn't know that some graphics cards have power requirements). Thinks that servers have powerful built in graphics cards because, well, its a server. He thinks that SATA hard drives last less then IDE hard drives His main work desktop (with all his video and photo backups of family, vacations, etc) is on the same network with machines infected with viruses that he works on. He will close his shop down (and has before) if his main desktop gets infected. Doesn't know shit about networking. He doesn't know shit about Macs, did the work for him, says he does all the work himself. Same with Linux computers. Says he does it all and knows it all. Used a power cable from a computer as an extension cord for a space heater in the shops bathroom. Did a networking job with him, it was all based on what the customer wanted for her business. Was around 2009 or 10. >Gateway AIO Computers (P3/Intel Video Chipset), running bootlegged copies of Photoshop >Ran the cabling because he didn't know the pinout for the end of the cables. >The owner wanted her work desktop to act as a print and file server. >Charged $50 for 3 hours of work. His family hangs out at the shop. They try to sell their stuff there. Fathers walking sticks with McDoanlds toys at the end. Sister sells pottery. His shop doesn't even look like a shop, image is his shop.

>she thought that a computer started up and ran like a car and had batteries inside that kept it running.
This is why people over 60 should not be allowed to have a computer....
Henry Hall
He goes on vacation 3 to 4 times a year, closes his shop down for a week or two during those times. His services is mostly clean installs (just installing the OS and some, not all, drivers), virus scan and removal, and some house calls just to hook up a computer, router, or printer. This is what he mostly knows how to do. Cuts too many corners to get a job done fast. Has a key cutting machine so he can make keys. Has an ice cream machine when he wanted to sell ice cream. But he didn't pass inspection because his dad used garden hoses for the water on it. Nothing is organized. Big jar with a mixed of screws ranging from fan screws to wood screws. Computer sit on the floor waiting to get fixed. Power for his worked area are daisy chained power strips and extension cords that have been cut to run from the basement to the upstairs and taped back together. Sells Chinese unbrand named laptop chargers that don't last long. Thinks because it has a dedicated graphics card that it can play any video game.
His shop is starting to slowly die. He is getting less customers in and he is trying to find side services to make extra money (ie, the key making machine).
Aaron Davis
He also has another old lady who, every time she wants to check her e-mail, clicks on the "Forgot your password?" link because she thinks the computer or internet has forgotten her password and she has to reset it every time. She checks her e-mail at least 6 times a day....
He has told her several times she doesn't need to reset her password every single time. She does it anyway because she is senile.
Austin Cruz
Fuckin old people. Help them with their tech problems, tell them how to do something or not to do this or that. Next day or two, they call back asking for the same damn help.
Jacob Flores
Or drive a car

Oh i so know that feelirino OPee, i once met an old lady and she said that she liked the laptop they sold her because it didn't run away when she burned cigarettes on it like her cat did xDDDDDDDDDDDDD

Today I got in a 27" Apple Cinema Display for repair. I was told it was probably a power supply issue, since the thing didn't even power up. Opened it up to be greeted by this. A MOSFET went short on the backlight circuit and sent 24V down the entire control chain. (1/3)
Joshua Davis
Burned a fucking hole through a four layer board.

This is the back of the LCD panel. And this, kids, is why you put fuses in your high current circuits.

jesus christ. any more photos of the shop?

>be 12 years old shithead >open computer case >see it's dusty as fuck >decide to clean it with a vacuum cleaner >computer doesn't work anymore
That day I've learned that static electricity and motherboards don't get along too well.

Buy air filters user, you just are filtering hair which is easy as fuck.
Chase Campbell
1. The guy's computer didn't have a filer for the PSU. 2. That's not just dog hair.

Go home Louis Rossmann.
Ayden Miller
I've been fixing so much Apple shit lately I might as well turn my channel into a repair one like Rossmann's
Thomas Sanders
How do you deal with clients that look like they are under abstinence syndrome when they are away from their iphones and macs for one hour? I stopped fixing them thanks to it, they get mad and want them back way too often.
Dylan Cruz
>burned a hole through a four layer board So it's fucked, yeah?
Jeremiah Mitchell
I don't deal with the public, I just fix discontinued models on the side for an authorized service center. Have been approached by mac users and they're pretty much like that though. They're also extremely scrutinous about the outside appearance of their machines. They spilled an entire soda can in their new MacBook Pro™ and don't give a shit, but God forbid you leave a scratch mark in the head lf the tiniest screw visible. Actually the PSU and the panel seem to be fine, and all the rest of the board (which does USB and audio) looks fine. The panel seems to take an eDP signal, so I'm fairly confident the thing could be brought back to life with some creative hacksawing of the mainboard and a chink LED backlight controller.

That's some next level shit, man, if you made a thread showing picture progress of something like that I'd be all over it.

good luck getting put out of business after Apple stores require you to bring your broken stuff to them and not a 3rd party neighborhood repair man.
Owen Martin
It's not like I haven't done it before. Pic used to be an iMac with a dead GPU, now it's my main monitor. Maybe I should do videos about this stuff. Meh.

shit that didnt happen for 300
if the case got that much higher than ambiant temperature then they case itself would have signs of over heating. Plastic would be melted, paper of any kind discolored.
Aaron Nguyen
There isn't much. He mostly posts pics of new cars he buys every year, the 3 houses he bought/sold during the past 5 years, and all his vacation pics. He does make good money but thats because in the area most people are morons when it comes to computers.
Anyway, here is a pic from his backroom/work area of the shop.
Luke Reyes
never going to happen
Aiden Gray
She didn't set the heater right smack in front of the thing. Just close enough for the computer to suck in a shit load of hot air.
Gabriel Mitchell
plastic would deform long before the cpu fried itself.
Gavin Allen
unless the case was METAL.
Ian Gomez
I made both my Spitfire and Morgan Durons release the smoke.
Never released the smoke on an Athlon though.
Hunter Butler
Find me a case that has no plastic in contact with it at any point. (protip: buttons and wire insulation are plastic) if its hot enough for the cpu to burn, the cpu fan would have melted, and as per your story "the cpu cooler works"
Robert Cruz
I'v seen this happen to, though it was someone leaving a computer next to a radiator.
Justin Russell
Lol same
Angel Campbell
60°C isn't enough to melt plastic. It's enough to kill CPU when it's effectively ambient temperature.
Austin Bennett
no its not. cpus can regularly get over 70C Ive seen them at 99C and still work.
Adam Reed
Was working in PC service, and we had rly retarded costumer, he was bringing his desktop PC almost every week, with bent cpu pins, he says he was changing thermal paste and clearing dust, but 3 out of 4 times he was coming for help because "after cleaning pc won't start", we explained what's the problem is many times, but he is genuine retard. Those amd pins are extremely durable because we had to straighten them about 8 times and shit keep working. I don't know whats happened but he stopped coming, maybe he realized how you need to insert cpu.
Matthew Bailey
Temperature increase behaves in a linear fashion, if you get 60C core temp at 20C ambient you would get 100C core at 60C ambient, assuming similar airflow, older AMD CPUs have their max temperature around 70C and prolonged use above thermal junction temperature will lead to bad things, although practically all post-2000 CPUs should power down on overheat.
My friend told me about his friend having trouble installing his new ryzen CPU. The story went that he heard a screech during HSF installation and then some pins were bent, and in the pic he sent there were a few bent on the edge of the CPU, we speculated for a moment on how it is even possible to bend pins after the CPU is secured in the socket and eventually found out that the guy had screwed on the heatsink with full retard strength, eventually the torque got so great the heatsink rotated a bit dragging the CPU along with it in the socket, the guy insisted that was what the instruction booklet told him to do.
Daniel Thomas
>99°C >70°C above ambient in a hot room Imagine your CPU worked at 130°C
Cameron Ramirez
idk what youre trying to say with the math and and all. the cpu sensor read 99C, the cpu still worked fine after the issue was corrected.
Gabriel Hughes
>tightening a heatsink like youre putting lugnuts on a car wew lad
John Carter
Not him, but >60C AMBIENT >+70C of CPU heat

update bios of my Asus P5Q3, freeze in% 64 forever.
John Russell
I got similar Mobo from my neighbor with dead bios due to power load on update. LPT programator into SPI header, and some program I forgot the name made by Czech dude named Rayer. Now I have good Mobo for my Xeon. The programmer was made by some local hack and he used some wrong put I couldn't find the name of, and put too long wires which made me and neighbor fail reviving this board many times. It's not actually that hard to fix if you fuck up bios update on lga775

Explained how his backroom is setup.
His shop is built up on hand me downs, stuff he got for free, or had on hand at the time of starting up. He doesn't invest much back into the business (besides for random shit not related to the business). He doesn't have pride on what he started or do for a living.
Other stuff he has in his shop is an Ice Cream machine in the far back of the shop. His dad (lol his dad doesn't know shit) hooked it up. They had it inspected because he wanted to sell Ice Cream from the shop. But they failed because his dad used garden hoses to supply the water to the machine.
His workbench area, how its wired up, is a bit of a cluster fuck. He has cheap power strips plugged into extension cords. Since there are no outlets close by, his dad drilled holes into the basement, cut the extension cords to run them and taped them back together. All of them are plugged into on outlet in the basement.
The garage area of the shop is just full of shit and all of his sisters pottery shit that her dad/mom/brother spent money on for her. She only did this for less then a year before giving up.
Noah Moore
What the actual fuck
Jacob Stewart
what about it?
Cooper Green
>first time I built my computer >not sure what to plug where >plug the front fan power cable into something (still not sure what it was) >light flash blinds me, smoke, flames, cable burnt, hear a "CLACK" and room fuse blows >somehow the mobo and the rest of the computer didn't get anything
Second biggest fear of my life. First one was after the shock I received by touching some part of a VCR seconds after unplugging it when I was 13.
Ethan Kelly
I had a friend that had his inkjet located directly in front of a heater and just didn't accept the fact that that made his ink dry out. Some people have weird concepts about how the world works.

be careful with these. apple might sue you if they find these posts.

this reminded me that i should check what is inside this laptop. i dont usually use it and it was stored under my bed for almost a year but at least it works.
