When the charging port is either in the corner or on the side really sells a phone to me. Shame most aren't like this.
I have not hands. If it's in the middle or regular spot it's not as comfortable. Especially for the occasional gaming session.

Btw this phone is the Sony Z3. And I have the Huawei Ascend XT where the port is in the bottom corner :)
Having phones on the side takes up valuable circuit real estate. Instead of some chips being closer to the processor, they'd have to be moved to the bottom of the phone, further away, to compensate for the chargin circuitry taking up a large amount of the space. It's put at the bottom after the battery, where there is free space because of the speakers and because if it were up to them they would do away with the charging port all together. Phones with ports on the side, in my opinion, are not well thought out.
Sony stopped doing it after the Z3 though

I had a phone before (htc sensation) where the charging port is on the right side. It's really annoying to use while charging.
My Q10 has microUSB and microHDMI on the left, if the headphone jack was on the bottom instead of top it'd be perfect
