Voltage is monitored and controlled in the device. If the battery voltage dips too low the device will shut off, correct, but just running the phone at full speed won't cause it unless the battery is really on its last legs, in which case it should be made abundantly clear to the user that the battery needs replacing.
This "feature" was implemented to mislead the user into believing their device was performing badly and needed upgrading, which isn't the case, only the battery needed replacement.

I have mixed feelings. It's just a power management policy...that said, they should have been honest about it. I wouldn't have a problem with it at all - IF Apple allowed rollbacks so you could return to iOS 10. But they don't. I still have an old 5s that I use around the house on wifi, but I haven't updated to iOS11. Glad to know that I was right to avoid the upgrade.

It’s essentially a choice between a slower phone or a phone whose battery randomly dies. Apple went with slightly slower phone, android went with dying battery.
Anyway after 2-3 years when this starts to take effect, the android isn’t even receiving updates anymore while the iPhone is. And the iPhone is still faster than an android even while slowed down. So which one is really planned obsolescence?
