Thunderbird is only slow if your antivirus scans in realtime as you download and index your inboxes (especially IMAP).
Add an exception in your AV for the Thunderbird profile folder. It's a HUGE difference.
Default is usually something like %AppData%\Thunderbird\Profiles

Claws Mail is lightweight enough to handle tens of thousands of mails on a Pentium 2 @ 350 Mhz with 512 MB. That was my main setup in 2005. It flies on a Raspberry Pi.
PGP support is decent too.
The only nice-to-have feature it lacks is IMAP IDLE.
