Just a variant of Neumann "Newman", common all over.

Did it originate in a specific region?

My great grandpa changed his name from Schmidt to Smith. From what I hear my relatives came from Bavaria. Is Schmidt a common name there?

>muh heritage

>naumann

naw, man

no, it's one of the most common names
Schmidt is also one of the most common names all over Germany

I call myself American, I don't go around saying shit like "I'm a German" or "I'm a Latvian" because of muh heritage.

From what I've heard Bavarians are unique among the rest of Germany. What sort of differences are there, if any?

Since it's somewhat related: are there ethnic germans with arabic last names somehow? Do you think this guy is german? Can't find a picture.

I don't think the differences are as pronounced as they are made out to be, if you compare Spain for example with the Catalonians who have their own language and names, you couldn't compare that to Bavarians. In general they are more rural and catholic and they have the Alpine influences. Though Bavaria itself is also pretty diverse as it's made up of 4 groups of which Bavarians are just one.

No, in that case the guy is from Bohemia and has a surname of Czech origin.
