Why do Americans say "Oh my Gosh"?

Why do Americans say "Oh my Gosh"?

Who is this Gosh?

It's how they call the dried up shart residue.

It's the sound the shart in mart does.

Gosh darn it

GOSH
O
S
H

Because Christians actually have a commandment not to take the name of God in vain, this is how in their minds some Americans keep to it.

Must be short for Gosher

British say "by jove!"
Canadians say "whoops a diddle fiddle"
Australians say "Oi!"
Southern Americans say "well gadzooks!"
Texans say "hwhut in tarnation!" Or "hwhut in sam hill!"

>heck = hell + fuck

My gosh honey, I'm having a humdinger of a time

Nah. It's just a more polite word for hell.

dad burn it, cool yer jets!

Heavens to Betsy!!!

because lutherans literally used to believe that saying "god" would physically hurt jesus

Because saying "oh my god" is a sin

You're a piece of poop
Gosh is gonna darn you to heck, mommyfreaker

>British say "by jove!"

YOU JUST WENT FULL PAGANISM

It's a minced oath to avoid taking the Lord's name in vain. Similarly
>hell -> heck
>fuck -> flip, fudge, etc.
>damn -> darn
>ass -> butt
>shit -> shucks
>Jesus -> Gee whiz, Jeez Louise, etc.

You should never use G*d's name in vain because G*d is very self-conscious and you could hurt his feelings. Saying gosh to mean G*d is okay because, despite carrying the same intention, the word gosh sounds different and therefore tricks G*d.

We have many words that are nicer replacements for bad words despite meaning literally the exact same thing as the bad words that they are nicer versions of.

These. It's essentially mock profanity, almost.

What's the fucking point when the intention is the same
It's not like God's name is in english or something

It's essentially to mask the profanity, although "Oh my God" is only really profanity when uttered by/to children or religious folk 2bh.

>Gee whiz, Jeez Louise, etc.
I really, really hate these

>Jeez Louise partner, you really gotta find Jesus in your hearts or else you'll go straight to heck

But actually, as , "God"/"Jesus" is only really profane around children or the religious.

>Gee whiz, Jeez Louise

Doesn't sound very respectful towards Jesus (or shall I say Gee Whiz) tbqh

Why's G*d such a gullible dumb fuck?

Indeed, but not taking the Lord's name in vain is also inferred to refer to not taking Jesus's name in vain as well.

Why don't they say "Oh My Goyim"?

Oh my topkek

>religious words are consider swear words
I remenber seeing an AVGN episode when he was shocked because there was the word "hell" on a videogame.

"Hell" and "Damn" are the only words that are considered outright profane (and even they're treated on the same level as "ass" or "shit", nowhere near as offensive as slurs or "fuck"), the others are just impolite/ profane for children and Ned Flanders types.

Video game adaptation of Dante's Divine Comedy:

>Heck
>Burgatory
>Baradise :DDD

>Who is this Gosh?
Are you retarded? He's the God of Sharts. Gosh for short.

Because Christianity

>taking thy Lord God's name in vain

Is this just a southern thing or nah?

Yeah it's a Bible belt thing. In the northeast at least, we say damn, hell, and jesus christ all the fucking time

It's funny because they think it's "don't take the name of the lord in vain".
But god's name isn't god. It's Yahweh. No body uses it because "don't take god's name in vain". Then people who don't know their own religion thought god's name was literally "god".

Sounds cute though you heretic

>i'll name this hitler-disgusted.jpg because this guy is hitler

aww, shucks!

"Oh my Gosh, they killed Kenny!"
"You buzzards!"

Gee golly, gosh darn it
