If there is one thing commercial software has historically gotten right is minimizing the amount of time between wanting your computer to do something and actually getting on with it.

I have gimp instead of photoshop because it's smaller and I don't really use it all that often.

I use photoshop more, since it has features GIMP does not, but GIMP is pretty good once you get used to the initially weird shortcuts.

I've never found a program that can really REALLY do good cutouts. The line tool and time is where it's at.

No, once I get done I go to the paths tab and use the "stroke path" option. Line thickness as these image sizes is a pain so I have to make do by adjusting the color of the outline instead. Also those Hideri ones are rushed. The Tats I did are better, but also took twice as long.

I didn't think of using stroke path but it seems obvious now. Good stuff, I'll keep it in mind when I do cutouts in the future.

You can see how some areas can be done simply. Two points, the right curve, and it's perfect (Tats' left shoulder for instance). Other spots have to have point after point placed. Oddly enough the former gives much better results. Finding where to place the point on certain curves is probably the most important bit of outlining.

Blender isn't THAT bad. It's more aimed at power users who just use shortcuts for everything, so there's no ramp up period where you ease into it. That said, when asked whether Blender foundation would consider improving the UI one of the developers told the person that they basically didn't want everyone getting into Blender and the blender community agreed, which is pretty fucking retarded for a tool meant to take on proprietary software. Now THAT said, it might not necessarily be as powerful or well supported in the industry it's by far more stable than proprietary solutions that get meaningful updates. Maya and Modo go from stable to unstable to barely working with every update cycle. Blender I've found is generally very stable and won't crash too often at least.
