That was just a geek toy with no good product/market fit. It didn't even support mobile network connectivity. I bet Nokia was afraid it would cannibalize it's other market segments if it was actually useful.
iPhone was released just a few months later and was an actual consumer oriented device with phone, music player and browser rolled in one device.
I'm not even an Apple fan. Just disappointed at how shitty Nokia was being run.
That's not really true. Back in the days when Maemo and the community was alive, it was a really nice tool.
I remember buying it second hand when I started my first job and it was really powerful back then: email, Skype, YouTube, jabber, and pretty much any Linux software was running on it.
You could get your Debian chroot for the software not present in maemo repos or you could port it yourself.
When the original iphone came out 2G connectivity was already too slow for decent Skype calls.
I owned both n800 and iPhone 2g but I so much preferred the n800 as it was much more versatile and functional.
>just a geek toy with no good product/market fit
Not true. I used it when travelling for work. It saved me once when my phone wasn't working in a foreign country and I had to make a Skype call from my N800 using the airport wifi to the person who was picking me up.
It was also great as an ereader before ereaders were a thing and to browse the web.

>neo900 announced 6 years ago
>not a single unit shipped yet
>still at the partial funding and asking €500 for a complete device that might not be shipped in the next 5 years
feels so fucking bad man.

>also a piece of shit in terms of hardware AND software
Goddamn freetards are ruining this board
oh yeah
It was essentially a PDA, and PDAs were smartphones ahead of its time
I warned you fuckers not to fall for that asshole's scam. If the project leader is an asshole with a toxic personality aka know-it-all then steer clear.
I'm a huge Maemo fan and I was one of the first people to get the N800, N810, N900 and Jolla phone and I could see by the way that guy was being aggressive in in forums and pushing good technical people away that it was going to fail right from the start.
1996 Nokia vision for their future phone.
>you will never use Nokia Communicator
You're just saying it was a great geek toy. Sure it was useful if you were skilled enough to utilize its potential but only few were able. Especially so as it couldn't replace your phone for normal mobile phone calls an SMS.
General populace wasn't interested in that kind of a device.
If N800 was N900 the game could've looked much different.

...
Not really ahead of it's time but first phone that had it all, wifi, gps and so on.
Most people today don't use their smartphones
who is this semen demon?
Man I wish Nokia would have gone with meamo instead of Windows phone. It was such a good os, had it on my N900 and it was the shit.
I loved this phone, used it for 5 years until it snapped in half when I sat on it.
