Is the Phenom II 910e still a viable CPU on 2018 for basic tasks and entertainment?

Is the Phenom II 910e still a viable CPU on 2018 for basic tasks and entertainment?

Absolutely.
For internet videos use youtube-dl and it works fine.

Probably.
My i7 920 still works great so I would say if you OC that phenom like crazy it will handle basic stuff.

It'll do perfectly fine.

Yes, anything C2D and Athlon X2 is perfectly fine for almost everything

Should be fine for web browsing and HD videos, just make sure you have at least 4 GB of RAM

no, but the 2500k is.

I had one of these OC'd to 3.6ghz with 8gb ram and a 6950 2gb as my main PC until Ryzen came out.

>i7 920
muh nigga
same here

question is the w7 "patch" out yet?
did we got fucked by intel?

dont want to replace this fucker....

Nehalem chips are fucked by the patch. The 32nm hex cores not so much, so you might wanna pony up the $20-$40 to grab one off ebay.

How did it fare in games? What did you play with it if anything? I'm trying to assemble a poorfag build for a friend because his fucking laptop is driving me fucking insane when we're playing shit and the games keep crashing on his end because his pc can't handle basic shit like divinity original sin. A friend of mine just offered to hand me over a phenom with a mobo.

I'm not really going to patch it because not only that exploit is pretty hard to apply in the real world, no one really tested on hardware this old so we would be going into some nasty uncharted territory here which will either end in BSODs like the anons with the AMD cpus where microsoft fucked them or straight out insane performance losses because no one really would waste time optimizing for the first gen core cpus.

btw I will buy a X5660 from ebay to give the system maybe another year or two before I blow my money on a threadripper. This little guy served me well for many years.

gonna go back to phenom ii x4 955 after selling my ryzen machine.
i think depends what you'll be doing, for the most part having an ssd will make anything run decently, baring games and shit like that. even my c2d chinkpad runs well enough for my usage with an ssd.

yes, everything past 2008/2009 is good for consumer pleb tier computing like browsing fagbook, youtube and HD netflix.

well AMD, Intel with a 30% reduction not so much.

So your phenom 2 is good

This my dad used a Pentium 4 hp desktop from early 2000s til late last year (in the final few years it was running linux mint) and it was just fine or even YouTube and other video streaming sites for him the (man loves his porn). Still would using it if I didn't give him an old Athlon ii x4 something another hp desktop I had laying around (still using linux mint though)

>This little guy served me well for many years.
me too, since 2008

but I thought the update will come you like or not, I turned off automatic updater long ago like always so Im good?

>I turned off automatic updater long ago like always so Im good?
Most likely yes.
been using 8.1 myself without any updates for a while too, don't give a fuck and never had any issues.
Whenever I need to run anything shady I usually stay on a linux VM anyways (that one I keep fully updated so it's technically patched).

NA OP its time to upgrade soon
as soon as am4 APUs drop for 100$ to 130$
and it runs under 65 watts!
average 40 - 50 fps with radeion apu

you could build a new pc for 300$
ditch this potato ASAP

ARM processors like the Apple A11 are incredibly weak and yet the seem to have good performance. This is because they are assisted by hardware decoders etc for video.

Just add a new video card to your computer like a rx560 with support for Hvec and H264 decoding and you will be able to view 4k videos.

If they keep making hardware accelerators for these kind of tasks, your bitch machine will still be usable in 10 years.

hell you can find a dead pc with this shit cpu for free at a lot of repair shops

I'm still using an AM2 I built ten years ago, fine for everything.

your point?

It cand do well for regular work yes.
I have old athlon II x64 chips (2 core) and a sempron (1 core) with experience gaming on a phenom x4 955 black edition.
Trust me your phenom is great enough for regular use. Just remember the 212 evo cooler for it

Dont, just do fx 6300 trust me. I started with the exact same cpu before upgrading to fx 6300.

no gpu needed!
and yes i have had several of these though my hands and its just too weak for me just for basic Internet usage it hits almost 100% usage just on web pages in my tests.
just because its cheap does

not mean the electric bill will be

I'm reading this post from a 19 year old 400 MHz system that used to design and model aircraft engines, I think a 2.6 GHz quad-core can still watch porn and shitpost on imageboards.

What is with all of the idiots here who totally lose their shit at 65W TDP desktop chips like they're going to cost you as much to run as an air conditioned datacenter? Unless you're some yuppie faggot living in a city that charges you out the ass for power or your mom deducts directly from of your tendies allowance, it's fuck all.

Yeah, nice that it has the lowered TDP too.

I have a phenom II that I play battlefield 4 on with 40 to 60 fps.

I don't play pubg so I can't tell you how well it runs that shit.

I still use a Phenom II X4 955 just fine, it's going on 9 years strong.

its so cheap, but at that point theres a lot of cpus in the 40$ range

had a phenom II till ryzen

for video, it would do 1080p without issue no matter the bit rate,

for games, don't even fucking bother if you play anything modern from a AAA, that shit will at best be console fps or at worst be so fucking bad its not playable, I had a 7970 3gb ghz with it, the cpu held the gpu back fairly bad.

for web, some sites will take the cpu out entirely, but those can be mitigated through extensions.

for daily use, nothing really bad with it.

personally, with ryzen putting out an apu for 100~$ I would just go with that and 8gb of ram in a bottom end motherboard, shit WILL be significantly better.

bullshit, by the time I got my phenom x4 my p4 was not even able to play youtube videos in 480 without using 100% of the cpu.

>even YouTube and other video streaming sites for him
A P4 would struggle with 480P.

my X3 720 did fine with 720p so dunno mang

They're talking about a Pentium 4.
A Phenom II X4 will handle any YT video you throw at it.

ok that makes sense then

I'm still using a Phenom II X4 965 as my daily desktop/workstation. Still feels plenty fast running Debian, although I doubt Winblows 10 would feel the same.

yeah me too man great cpu, works fine with winblows 10 8gb ram and some aymd hd6850 and i have absolutely no reason to upgrade for my home use (have a company laptop for work additionally)

I remember choosing the 9550 over the q6600. My friends laughed at my "poor single core performance"

you waited a decade to laugh, congrats
