Managing your own NAS may be a good hobby but for those who just want a NAS that works, QNAP and Synology are good choices.
I think QNAP and Synology were under the NDA, so they would have had a few months, but I do question whether this change was actually motivated by meltdown.

I bought a Synology NAS and don't regret it but I think I'll setup an old workstation with FreeNAS and do an rsync backup overnight. Hopefully it isn't so good that I regret the Synology purchase.

ZFS on freeBSD will always be superior simply because it's much more mature and integrated with the rest of the system there.
I would not be surprised if compatibility of zpool is not guaranteed when migrating from one system to another, in the same way it used to happen with Solaris ZFS version.
If you want to use linux and you have big files, stick to XFS instead.
