Text Editor Thread

What's your favorite text editor and why is it Atom?

>JS the editor

Cross-site scripting the editor

Vee Sual StooDio Codhe

It's vim, actually, don't assume my editor

VS Code because it's just like Atom but much faster and better.

> Using a glorified website to edit your code

End yourself already

Notepad2

for me it's Visual Studio Code

Visual studio is really nice actually. I really like the drop down menu for when you put in functions and classes.

sublime

nano

It doesn't concern me how my text editor works under the hood. Why does it to you?

I just
echo "" >> myProgram

Line by line

micro

Kate.

my nigga

You misspelled notepad++

NetBeans

VSCode, intellisense is the best
Sublime for quick editing
Atom looks nice but is heavy

Notepad

gedit ;^)

Use cat instead, then you can do single or multiple lines and don't need the quotes
$ cat >> myProgram
#include
int main(void)
{
^D
$ cat >> myProgram
puts("Hello world");
^D
$ cat >> myProgram
return 0;
}
^D

Microsoft Word

text exitor != IDE (or something close to that)

text editor is a software that edits text in a file and does it well.

so:
>fuck hilight
>fuck VCS support
>basically fuck Atom, VSCode, etc..

text editors are:
>Vim
>emacs
>medit
>gedit
> ...

Try to open 1.5G file in VSCode or Atom and u will get the idea.

dont make me post the latency chart

Sublime Text a best.

Sublime text m8

samefagging

You're an user of culture

...

Vim and emacs both support hilighting and VCS though

Does this website support C++? Honest question.

i only use vim because i'm in first year of cs, never had to write code as a job and i heard that is so l33t
also you all fuckers using anything else are fucking retarded

>puts

Please do.

Emacs.
Anyone here use Spacemacs? How is it compared to Vim and Emacs?

brackets, super comfy and easy to use.

emacs everyday

Vim. It's the only text editor that has the power required to hack text files at my level of expertise.

sublime is too comfy

>Atom
>Shitty sublime #12412412

Why does a text editor take up several hundred megabytes of disk space? Other editors have the same features but at sub-20 MB folder sizes.

>built-in Google Analytics surveillance
Oh, right.

Vim

I unironically use gedit when working on C or any kind of scripting stuff.
You're on your own anyway in terms of being able to jump between definitions in source/header files, so anything more than syntax highlighting and regex search&replace is placebo.
Only use IDEs for OOP trash since I can't remember 200,000 library methods.

Atom is bloated electron shit.
Sublime text was, is and will be the best.

When I log into my Xenix system with my 110 baud teletype, both vi and Emacs are just too damn slow. They print useless messages like, ‘C-h for help’ and ‘“foo” File is read only’. So I use the editor that doesn't waste my VALUABLE time.

“Ed is the standard text editor.”

Computer Scientists love ed, not just because it comes first alphabetically, but because it's the standard. Everyone else loves ed because it's ED!

And ed doesn't waste space on my Timex Sinclair. Just look:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root 24 Oct 29 1929 /bin/ed
-rwxr-xr-t 4 root 1310720 Jan 1 1970 /usr/ucb/vi
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root 5.89824e37 Oct 22 1990 /usr/bin/emacs

Of course, on the system I administrate, vi is symlinked to ed. Emacs has been replaced by a shell script which 1) Generates a syslog message at level LOG_EMERG; 2) reduces the user's disk quota by 100K; and 3) RUNS ED!!!!!!

Let's look at a typical novice's session with the mighty ed:

golem$ ed

?
help
?
?
?
quit
?
exit
?
bye
?
hello?
?
eat flaming death
?
^C
?
^C
?
^D
?

Note the consistent user interface and error reportage. Ed is generous enough to flag errors, yet prudent enough not to overwhelm the novice with verbosity.

ED IS THE TRUE PATH TO NIRVANA! ED HAS BEEN THE CHOICE OF EDUCATED AND IGNORANT ALIKE FOR CENTURIES! ED WILL NOT CORRUPT YOUR PRECIOUS BODILY FLUIDS!! ED MAKES THE SUN SHINE AND THE BIRDS SING AND THE GRASS GREEN!!

When I use an editor, I don't want eight extra KILOBYTES of worthless help screens and cursor positioning code! I just want an EDitor!! Not a “viitor”. Not a “emacsitor”. Those aren't even WORDS!!!! ED! ED! ED IS THE STANDARD!!!

TEXT EDITOR.

Ed is for those who can remember what they are working on. If you are an idiot, you should use Emacs. If you are an Emacs, you should not be vi. If you use ED, you are on THE PATH TO REDEMPTION. THE SO-CALLED “VISUAL” EDITORS HAVE BEEN PLACED HERE BY ED TO TEMPT THE FAITHLESS. DO NOT GIVE IN!!! THE MIGHTY ED HAS SPOKEN!!!

i do, and i am not ashamed
