What are good IRC channels?
IRC seems like the place to go to find a programming/cyberpunk/etc community.
It just feels like I missed the boat by being born a little too late.
How does one get started with IRC?
Downloaded the client, installed it, joined #salt, but i swear I don't know what the hell I'm looking at and what to do.

Join #templeos on Rizon for occasional Terry or general tech discussion. #Sup Forumspunk is pretty active but it's basically just shitposting. Last time I was on they were having a 25 minute long political "debate" about transgenders.

I don't know what happened but at some point in time it became cool to be on irc 24/7 and not say anything.
Why not starting your own irc channel where inactivity gets booted ?

Its even prevalent in discord servers,people are online but they never say a word.

That seems more of an issue of the servers you join. For discord I've noticed either people all tend to get on around the same time depending on the time zone most people in the server are in or they are always on and talking but its fill with degenerate kids.

All of these retards in this thread saying that IRC users only idle are probably only using huge channels on huge networks like freenode or something. Regularly converse with channels of around 15-75 people on various niche topics, especially on the niche networks. Just gotta know where to go, and it does help if you've been there for awhile.

IRC by itself is fantastic. Low resource requirement, you can send and receive files. But you have to essentially run your irc server by yourself and talk to people you know in real life. Otherwise it's just a bunch of fucking retarded monkeys that never talk to humans IRL and have no idea how to communicate.
I'm thinking about creating an IRC for my university, where should i host it for free? I will share the server on the wall with only the address of the server and the name of the channel to filter the normies.
