No, Richard, it's 'Linux', not 'GNU/Linux'. The most important contributions that the FSF made to Linux were the creation of the GPL and the GCC compiler. Those are fine and inspired products. GCC is a monumental achievement and has earned you, RMS, and the Free Software Foundation countless kudos and much appreciation.
Following are some reasons for you to mull over, including some already answered in your FAQ.
One guy, Linus Torvalds, used GCC to make his operating system (yes, Linux is an OS -- more on this later). He named it 'Linux' with a little help from his friends. Why doesn't he call it GNU/Linux? Because he wrote it, with more help from his friends, not you. You named your stuff, I named my stuff -- including the software I wrote using GCC -- and Linus named his stuff. The proper name is Linux because Linus Torvalds says so. Linus has spoken. Accept his authority. To do otherwise is to become a nag. You don't want to be known as a nag, do you? Be grateful for your abilities and your incredible success and your considerable fame. Continue to use that success and fame for good, not evil. Also, be especially grateful for Linux' huge contribution to that success. You, RMS, the Free Software Foundation, and GNU software have reached their current high profiles largely on the back of Linux. You have changed the world. Now, go forth and don't be a nag.
Thanks for listening.

GNU/Linux. Linux is the kernel of the GNU/Linux operating system. Hope that helps.
Angel Thomas
you should email him this, he will read it and he will be really buttmad. I emailed him one time basically calling him a commie. He will not actually respond to anything though, he is basically reddit tier and he will just act superior and call you dumb in a very roundabout sarcastic manner.

i thought he responds to every single email he gets

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Since Linux is the part that's communicating with hardware, it's appropriate to say either "Linux" or "GNU/Linux" depending on your personal preference and views on credit honoring. The real problem are the idiots saying the operating system is just GNU. Those are the ones people should be after. GNU without Linux fills none of the requirements of an OS.

Linux'
Argument disregarded
Levi Diaz
Nobody asked to call the kernel Linux GNU/Linux. Linux is the correct name for Linux, but the GNU operating system's name is GNU and you shouldn't change it to Linux. The combination of GNU and Linux is GNU/Linux, just like the combination of GNU/kFreeBSD and other variants.

Hooo? Then why is it called Android even though it's using the Linux Kernel and why do you call it Linux if it's actually the GNU Operating System with a tiny part called Linux?
Parker Hernandez
The Linux operating system is named Linux because the man who wrote it, Linus Torvalds, named it.
William Lewis
The GNU operating system is named GNU because the project that developed it, the GNU Project, named it.
Matthew Sanders
the combination of this is gnu+linux
James Foster
except he didnt, it was his friend who hosted the ftp server. Linus was gonna call it minix.
Jackson Davis
Arch Linux is an operating system based on Linux kernel.

100% agreed OP. I've been calling it Linux and will continued to call it that. There's no amount of things anybody can say or do to make me say it's not Linux.
Ryan Adams
Agreed. The kernel is called Linux. Just Llinux, no matter if it's used in the GNU operating system, in the Android operating system or anywhere else. Linux will always be just Linux. Linus named the kernel Linux, so be it.
Christopher Phillips
You can have a Linux system with zero gnu utils, core libs or compilers so no, it's not a part of the gnu system
Jonathan Jenkins
Linux is the thing that matters. A device that comes with Linux is what I would choose over something that comes with something else instead. No matter if it's a laptop, a router, a phone, a car or a consumer robot. If I mention my laptop to a friend I'm only mentioning that I have Linux instead of Windows on it and my friend will know what I mean. If my friend then wants to know more I'll mention the distro name, skipping GNU anyway. There's no point in people's lives where they would actually need to mention GNU. It's a fine project though, people should use GNU tools if possible.

Finally someone that understands. All these RMS lovers need to seriously take a seat back and relax.
