Reposting Arch explanation
Arch has never been a minimalist distribution. Splitting packages is rare compared to other distributions, and dependencies aren't made optional whenever possible. Arch has *never* been minimalist... a Linux kernel with every module available and every feature enabled at least when there's no non-bloat related cost, feature-packed/complex GNU tools, nearly all optional features enabled across all the packages, etc.
>pacman is fast but not safe, it tends to break shit and config protection is implemented in a terrible way >there is no official process to verify that a package is stable within the distro, in other distros a lot of packages are in a testing repo despite that specific package's developer claiming it to be stable on its own, because it might not be stable within the environment of a specific distro >a lot of AUR packages pull from upstream, which means they could be very unstable >(arch vs gentoo related) arch users complain about muh compile time when it comes to gentoo, while in fact they compile a lot of AUR packages themselves, namely the *-git packages that pull the source from a git repo >but it gets even better: they only compile a handful of packages, and those not being libraries mostly, the self-compiled packages get linked against precompiled libraries from a different setup (e.g. different optimization levels), which can then cause even more instability because it's a clusterfuck of unequal shit >arch uses (((systemd))) and switching to something else is hard >apparently the vim package on arch pulls in X, so if you want to have a fancy terminal text editor on a headless server, you to install a shit ton of GUI stuff you'll never need nor use >maintainer told the guy who complained to just symlink vi to vim (vi is inferior)

Reposting minimalism rant
The thing for me when it come to this is that I'm kinda disgusted by the amount of bloat in popular applications and environments.
Let's take the picture viewer as an example. What does it do? That's right! It views pictures! We have also seen picture viewers that can run with very tiny amounts of ram, and do their job pretty well. Why then should we be using a picture viewer that does the exact same practical thing as this minimal picture viewer, but is 10+ times heavier?
I've heard this a lot, the whole "lel just get a newer computer grandpa!" I'd like to let you know that I use minimal setups both on a 2012 Fagbook Pro, and a Xeon workstation being used as a desktop. Both of these have 16+ GB of memory. What you have to understand is that just because we have the resources, doesn't mean it's right to use them to the limit. Why should we artificially use more resources for the same tasks just because we have the capability to do it. That's retarded. At that point we should just rewrite the kernel in electron because clearly anyone who has a problem with that just needs to download more wam.
Another key component for me is that achieving a high level of minimalism often involves switching to a vey terminal-heavy lifestyle. This is good as it provides a universal interface. The interface used to shitpost, consume content, and whatnot, is the same interface that would be used when administering a server, when configuring my NAS, when working with Amazon EC2 installations, etc.
Why do you hate keeping things simple? Why do you want things to use more resources than they have to to complete their function?

>Reminder that Arch isn’t minimal. But you can setup your desktop the way you want without preinstalled bloat. Sounds pretty minimal to me.

they are still stored when you sync the package db, probably not bad with asmall distro like alpine but the portage tree is bloated as fuck and stored locally. also not using a custom kernel is bloat, using an initramfs without full disk encryption is useless and bloat. then there is all the useless gpl licenses shit that they have to add to each package, the useless foreign languages and much much more bloat. distros ate bloated by design except maybe for alpine which is more like broken by design

>they are still stored when you sync the package db dont know if youre talking about a specific distro, but on apt based distros you can delete the db with apt clean i believe (i dont know the size of it, but it cant be that big) grant you this one though, it could be made better, something like the google play store does on android if you want something search for it remotely, dont download the world >there is all the useless gpl licenses shit that they have to add to each package yeah, think thats dumb too, but thats part of the license, not the distros fault >foreign languages not sure what youre refering to here, programming languages (like bindings between different languages) or actual human languages? >programming doesnt happen on debian afaik >human languages does happen if you install a DE like gnome/mate/etc you can safely remove then, the package manager doesnt even complain >distros ate bloated by design but they serve the purpose well, it makes a stable (it should at least) base for many different ppl with different HW

Okay minimalfags, I'd appreciate an explanation on why bash is bloat, what's the best alternative and why, and then also how much less disk and ram usage is it actually providing or is it all just a drop in the ocean and lacking features like decent completion and vi mode? To me it seems that installing some other shell just makes the system bigger overall, and trying to maintain the dependencies of uninstalling bash could be bad (I haven't tried, though).
I really love minimalism in computing but I also love meaningful convenience- and aesthetics features. And believe that there is a limit on how far one should enforce ideologies before it becomes autistic, headache-inducing and the returns diminishing.
Especially dwm is something I can't wrap my head around, why the hell does 3MB less RAM compared to i3 matter when it has worse documentation, customization, and failed to resize tiling windows last time I tried it. (Could also be that I tried it on OpenBSD and I grew overly frustrated at how hard it is to get stuff like ext4 and mouse wheel emulation to work compared to average Linux, and now I just associate it with that frustration. Maybe I should revisit it some day with plenty of time and patience to study the dwm docs)

tfw tired of ricing and configuring the OS and just want to get things done but can't stand bloated DE's. Is there such a thing as a minimal distro sensibly preconfigured with device management, power management (hibernation, suspend..) etc. but no other software so I can just install a WM and few programs that I'm used to and just get work done?

Bash performs worse than both zsh and dash but unfortunately is required by many packages so fucking with it isn’t a great idea. What I did was relink /bin/sh to dash and change my login shell to zsh. It might take up some more megabytes but the decrease in ram usage and increase in speed is well worth it, imo. This is more of a ricer’s approach than a minimalist’s though.
