>Detachable touchscreen with pen is fun to browse with
>Fulcrum hinge is sexy af and no it doesnt gather dust inside.
>light af
>2.5 gbs read speeds

Cons:
>Screen is basically a mirror
>If there is any scratch it's pretty noticeable
>Comes preinstalled with non-generic Microsoft "optimized" Windows & OEM drivers
>Storage is 128gb
>More likely to get stolen than a Macbook in public
>iGPU HD 520
>Microsoft has stopped updating its graphics drivers since Sep.
>Come pre-loaded with more botnet than any other laptop
>Doesn't come in black
>No usb c; uses proprietary Surface connector and those are expensive af

Ok, I'll play. 2013 i7 Macbook Air.
>Screen a bit glossy, but generally fine. New hidpi screens are nice but 1440x900 feels ok.
>512gb ssd, still runs great, nbd
>Rarely use the speakers as I'm either on headphones or use them on a desk with externals. Wouldn't mind them being a bit less tinny.
>Pre-butterfly keyboard so feels pretty good when propped up on my lap. Use a super clacky external keyboard for when it's on a desk though.
>Battery's pretty knackered but I can get 4 hours out of it even now
>Bezels, yeah, eurgh. Wish they were black.
>No issues with the weight

>2 3.0 ports and a TB3 port with charging support
>also has a seperate charging port
>charger connector has a funky white LED
>specific to my product, no coil whine, so yuy
>there's a small metal cover on the bottom, held in place with a magnet, underneath are all the electronic device labels
>mfw Dell made a cover just to hide the ugly stickers
>NVMe just because I wanted NVMe, 256GB is easily enough even with per-package ccache
>very loud speakers
>wireless card is Killer Wireless AKA Atheros with the in-kernel open-source ath10k driver, plays nice with Linux
>Intel UHD Graphics 620 is pretty fast for an iGPU
>the ideal Gentoo machine
Cons (mostly just tingling autism):
>second white LED at the front of the laptop acts as a charge indicator, slightly different color than the one on the charger triggers my autism occasionally
>pieces of dirt get stuck at the edges of the screen a lot and are very hard to get out
>hinge feels kinda loose when closed
>8GB RAM is not enough for 8 make jobs holding a fuckton of dependencies running at once (chromium)
Fixes (or other things):
>Gentoo ~amd64
>btrfs root
>EFISTUB
>minimal ck kernel with low latency and barely any drivers for anything

>extremely well built
>keyboard is the best ive ever had on a -modern- laptop and i've owned quite a few thinkpads, elitebooks, etc.

>Battery life is decent, I squeeze 5 hours out of it daily
>it's become my primary machine for programming
>i get compliments from macfags all the time

cons:
>ChromeOS stock
>have to open it up and take out a screw if you want to overwrite the bios and get google botnet out (dont need to overwrite bios to install linux though)
>ghosting on screen (may be just an issue with my own though)
>audio drivers for linux require some configuring if you want headphones to work
>High DPI screen means that you're also going to have to fuck around with pretty much any DE you install. XFCE and Budgie are the only ones that really get the job one perfectly IMO, KDE works decently, and i have not tried out gnome on this thing
>If you don't want to remove the google bios, then you'll have to hit CTRL+L each time you boot it (really never bothered me to be fair)

MacBook Air 2013
pros:
> OS X really is an extremely comfortable OS once you get used to its quirks. Things like github.com
> 16:10
> battery life was far ahead of competition when it was released
> one of the best laptop keyboards I've used, and that includes several ThinkPads
> touchpad is very good, customizable
cons:
> OS X is now an afterthought for Apple, maintained by pajeets
> screen is trash: TN, awful viewing ranges, low res (in an OS based around HiDPI)
> many build quality issues despite the reputation: I had to replace the keyboard (stopped working), the screen (dust speck) and just recently, the Thunderbolt/miniDP port died and I can no longer connect this
> fixing the miniDP port involves REPLACING THE ENTIRE LOGIC BOARD
> miniDP is a piece of shit connector designed to force you into dongle hell
> dongles die after several months, every single time
> RAM is soldered
> no dGPU
> unnecessarily difficult to fix because the ultrabook meme, requires proprietary screwdriver

Cons:
>Shitty Samsung LCD
>Shitty touchpad
Im thinking about buying one as a secondary machine.I have a few questions:
-How long is the battery life?
-Would it be decent for light photo and video editing?
-Does it come with a surface pen?
-How hot does it get under load?
-How durable is it? (I work in a STEM field)
Thanks fellow Anons !
>I get around 4.7 hours
>Yes
>No, bought mine when it was cheap on ebay, broke and the Microsoft Store replaced it for free.
>about 77C
>Not durable at all, buy screen protector and skin, or case.
In heinsight I shouldve bought it with a dgpu
Would recommend this
True.
But touchpad and LCD is OK.
2015 Chromebook Pixel LS here

>Dual boots GalliumOS, highly functional, and HiDPI settings not needed if resolution is turned down as font rendering is immaculate even when compared to equivalent resolution on other screens.

>Keyboard and touchpad are superb and repsonsive
>Two USB-C ports, one on each side, and both able to charge the battery which lasts me near 9 hours even on Linux
>Two USB 3 ports on left to boot
>Excellent WiFi card, able to squeeze the most speed out of any router compared to other laptops
>Dead quiet and cool at all times
Cons:
>$1000 price tag used, not cheap
>Small SSD (SDCard helps) with little room to share between ChromeOS and Linux
>Chromebook dev mode warning on boot, can easily wipe machine with an accidental space bar press
>Driver trouble for audio and external monitors
>Speakers somewhat hollow sounding
>No longer in production, no warranty, repairs not very feasible, lots of soldered hardware
SNSV T100
Good:
>small
>atom cpu isnt that bad
Bad:

>not full hd
>32gb emmc
>2gb ram

Worthwhile purchase?
Alienware MX11 r1 - Refurb - Purchased in 2011 (I think)
Pros:
>Was fast at the time
>Dedicated graphics
>Can switch between integrated and dedicated to save battery
>Could be used for gaming
>Keyboard is surprisingly decent to type on, less so now but still
>Can change backlighting for keys, logo and other parts

>4GB RAM is no longer enough
>Glossy screen is terrible in the light unless brightness is 100%
>Battery isn't the best (Still get 3.5 - 4 hours out of it though)
I want to upgrade to something else, was looking at the surface pro, hp envy/spectre x360, dell XPS but not sure which one to go for. Would also take a few months to pay it off so its a hit to my credit card and thus a big decision.
Use it as a melee weapon and rob a best buy

Con

Never buy consumer laptops.
I've had the HP Spectre x360 13 inch for a month and a half. Got it for $1k on Black Friday. I chose it because I use the Home, Pg Up/Dn and End keys and this is the only laptop in this size that had them.
The specs speak for themselves. The fans are quiet. They've either fixed the coil whine or I caught a lucky break.
The HP Stylus is kind of shitty but I never planned on using it, and it can run a little hot,
but all in all it's a good machine. My other issues with it seem to be the fault of Windows. not HP, so there isn't much to say there.
10/10
You wouldn't treat your MacBook like this

>Screen is meh
>idk why but computrace is enable when i check the bios
>shit trackpad
why would you lie
>Gamer Notebook
>32GB DDR4 RAM
If you are only doing gaming on that, you obviously don't need that much ram. Such a waste. You don't need more than 8GB of ram for any kind of gaming. What are you going to do with the rest of the ram? Create a massive RAM disk, photo editing or video editing 4K? Programming?
I don't get the meme of laptops supplying with enormous amount of ram, unless it is for programming and doing media creation. 8GB is perfect, but if absolutely need 16GB, then that is all you need.
>But, I just want the ram just incase
Incase of what? If you don't end up using all that ram then it is a waste. I don't even use all of 8GB. I might just create a RAM disk on my Hackintosh system.
macs have great,if not the best touchpad
Surface Laptop 7th gen Core i7
Pros: Screen is probably the best you'll find at this price point, especially considering the fact that it's 4:3.
>Battery life is good

>Light
>Thin
>Trackpad is good
Cons:

Literally, if they'd just have added a USB C port with Thunderbolt and used the 8th Gen CPU's I would have given it a 10/10, but it doesn't so I gotta give it a 7.5.

> load and clear beats(tm) speakers

> the only vesrion of windows that runs smoothly on this mf is LTSB. any Linux distro works like a charm
I have the same laptop as the op, bought new, and I'm about to get rid of it. Keyboard isn't good. Bezels aren't good. Hinge is bad and it gets slightly bent carrying it a bag. 2 in 1's are a meme. The only good part was the screen and battery and now the battery isn't holding as much juice as it was before.
surface pro 3 i7 8gb that i've been using for like 2.5 years, recently replaced the screen and battery, and redid thermal paste while it was apart about a month ago.
>> i fucking love it so much, i have the type cover (mandatory) as well as the pen and arc touch mouse, and it's just so god damn convenient.
i have the dock and have it hooked up to 2 47in tv's infront of the couch with a wireless keyboard+touchpad for when i'm at home, and i take it literally everywhere and use it in portrait with the pen, and in laptop mode with the type cover and mouse depending on what i'm doing and where. i have a decent desktop and another laptop and i haven't touched either in over 6mos...
my desktop is basically just a NAS for my surface at this point as i don't game much anymore, and when i do it's only forza 6 on xbox, and even then i stream that through the surface more often than not.
its old af but still runs well enough to be worth fixing after all this time, and i'm glad i didn't buy a sp2017 yet. although i probably will at whatever point i break this thing again
heres a pic of the mobo from when i had it apart. kinda neat to see this type of cooling in a tablet form factoe

>nVidia gpu was outdated for gaymes even >back then
Thinkpad X230

>matte screen
>feels very solid
>God tier battery
>two drives
>thinklight
>great keyboard
>expresscard for pcie expansion, including egpus
Cons:
>loudish but shit speakers
>soldered dual core cpu

That's your fault
2011 15” MBP - 2.2 i7 - 16gb ram - 512ssd
Pros:
>Still does everything I want it to
>Fast brought for what I want
>Decently upgradable but have maxed it out
>Non glossy display
Cons:
>Heavy and big
>Beat up and dented all over the place
I don’t plan on getting anything new until it just doesn’t run anymore
>mono speaker
>in 2014
>even the X230 has stereo speakers
Wtf Lenovo
Thinkpad x230 8gb, IPS, SSD
Pros:
>quality and modularity make for a solid and lasting purchase
>trackpoint
>battery life is super with a 9-cell
>reasonably thin and light
>has both DP for my home monitor and VGA for school projectors and anything else
>usb3, and enough of them
>ethernet for that tiny edge in lan games of quake etc
>sd card for "emergency" raspberry pi setups etc
>very affordable
>has great support for all operating systems
>pretty decent performance considering it's price
>GPU has Vulkan support
>dual sodimm
>last generation of thinkpads that doesn't have massive mysterious hardware problems
>can get coreboot
Cons:
>smallest resolution screen I could settle for (displayport hack displays possible but difficult)
>shitty color accuracy (but good contrast and viewing angles)
>usually have to tweak and buy extras to get a solid setup (ram and ssd, tear down and clean, change thermal paste, etc)
>no really thermally suited for any gaming but usually possible, especially on minimum settings and older titles
>can have problems with the lid (sleep) sensor
>has Intel ME
how painful was it to take apart? The one video i saw the guy broke his screen trying to get it off.
the glass is basically impossible to take off without mangling, but the new screen went in easy after tediously cutting adhesive tape to fit all the weird spots. even though the bezel is all fucked up, the display still worked for 2 days like that (i had to order a t3 screwdriver after it was open to disconnect battery)
Yeah thats what i've seen happen and keeps me from getting one of these. Probably going to get a yoga instead after I get bored of my x230t.
my thinking is why would i ever have to take the display off if it isn't broken anyway. its not like you can upgrade anything but the ssd, and it's a weird half length one, anyway. i excised the hinges, and cleaned the fan when i had it apart and redid the thermal paste but theres not much else you'd be able to do in there
What case is that on your SP3?
I wish somebody just sold a modified MBP base with nice, neat air intakes cut out already.
It does wonders for the cooling system but it looks like such shit like that.
UAG one on amazon, i paid 70 but they're like 50 now. its thicc af but it protects very well and i prefer the integrated kickstand to the built-in one. i actually ripped the OE hinges out when i had it apart because they were getting sloppy and pushing on back of display
Thinkpad x240
runs GCC
good keyboard
screen's ok for 12"
If you need your laptop for something else get a desktop
nice job and thanks for the info!
Lenovo IdeaPad Z5070
Core i7 4510U
GeForce 840M (4 GB)
8 GB DDR3 RAM
240 GB SSD Kingston HyperX SAVAGE
Pros:
>Discrete graphics card is better than nothing
>8 GB RAM is good enough for normal use
>Upgradable (can replace RAM, hard drive...)
>Numpad
>15.6" FHD screen
>Almost not heated during normal use
Cons:
>Crappy TN panel
>Shit battery life (2-3 hours of web browsing)
>Shit keyboard
>Heavy af (2.4kg/5.29lbs)
>Fan loud af
Fixes:
>Replace optical disk driver with 1TB HDD
>Upgrade RAM to 16 GB
clevo bro, p650-hp6 here
PROS: 120hz monitor, picked all my core components. Did own OS install. no forced crapware.
2 available 2.5" hdd slots for upgrade, 960pro nvme screams for audio/video processing. Bought with no branding on it, no gay labels.
CONS: still looking for major one after 6months of use. It's heavy?
I am thinking of getting this exact laptop. How is the build quality and is it easy to tear apart and upgrade?
MSI GL62M
7700HQ, 2GB 1050
2TB SSD, 5TB HDD, 64GB DDR4
Good:
• Thin
• Lightweight
• Loud speakers
• Conservative fan speeds even under heavy loads
• Bought it for $199
• Great battery life (4.5 hours)
Bad:
• Flimsy chassis
• Fingerprint magnet (even the slightest touch)
• Way too much keyboard flex
Ugly:
• Insane screen flex
• Hinges were made to break
• Mediocre IPS display
It was $199 so whatever
It's got one huge panel on the bottom. Build quality is solid. You can find the service manuals online easily.
almost everything can be serviced on it.
Thinkpad T430
Pros:
>fantastic build quality
>everything is upgradeable/replaceable
>keyboard
>trackpoint
>very sturdy hinges
>good battery life
>can have 3 drives
>thinklight
>hooks hold it closed
>clamshell lid
>aesthetic
Cons:
>higher res 1600x900 screen still bad
>speakers suck
>speaker grilles impossible to clean, save replacing the entire sticker
>throttles on heavy cpu+dgpu loads
My meme machine is a 2017 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar.
Pros:
> Fantastic Screen amazing color display
> Best laptop speakers on the market in my opinion
>Touchmeme is decent, having it change based on what you're doing is neat.
>Looks nice.
>Feels sturdy
>Good battery life
> Touchpad is amazing, best thing ever.
>OSX feels nice to use after you get used to it.
> Does everything I need it to do, fast, doesn't heat up easily.
Cons:
>Keyboard travel ridiculously small, makes you double guess your key strokes.
> TouchMeme needs tactile feedback or something
> Only USB-C.
>No Magsafe
>High Sierra is probably the worst MacOS release.
>Bootcamp doesn't recognize APFS. So you can't boot into MacOS without selecting the disk.
>`Screen a bit too glossy
hp elitebook 840 g1
pros:
>great keyboard
>pretty good io
>great trackpad
>good cooling system, near silent fan
>decent battery life
>good hackintosh
cons:
>shitty stock screen, bad viewing angles
>trackpoint is shit
kys
>2017 Laptop
>PRO
>Doesn't have a single USB port
The absolute state of Apple, they used to set trends by including ports, now they think people are going to think they're revolutionary for removing them.
Lenovo thinkpad x200
Pros:
>Cheap
>Small and compact
>Easy to service
>Good keyboard
>Good linux support
>Libreboot
>No camera
>No touchpad
>Good battery life
>Replaceable battery
Cons
>Dim screen
>Bad speakers
>High pitched noise
>Can only play old games such as quake
You sound mad. Everything okay user?
X1 Yoga 2nd Gen
Pro:
> dank rise/fall keyboard, fun to show off and will probably be remembered like 701c
> OLED 2k display is lit af, probably the last OLED in a laptop for a few years since they're removing it in 3rd gen
> intel integrated graphics really aren't so bad anymore
> decent linux driver support
> trackpoint
> performance is good enough for most of the stuff i do: ricing, reverse engineering, text editing, occasional big compiles, shitposting on botnet social networks
> pretty nice build for an ultrabook
> USB-C charging is decidedly not a meme
> fully charges in like 30 minutes
> LTE modem is cool but haven't used it in months
> got a maxed config for free because lenovo is retarded and stopped stocking 1st gen keyboards after they released this one
Cons:
> convertible/touchscreen is a big meme, i barely use the pen for anything ever since i got the first gen a year and a half ago
> OLED burn-in paranoia if you're autistic like me
> tiny battery, like 4200 mAh, so you really need to squeeze what you can out of it. trying out a #000000 heavy rice right now to see if it helps any
> USB-C ports only on one side, so you don't get one of the best benefits of meme charging
> speakers have good sound quality but amazingly quiet. not really competitive in 1949+69
Mkay I'll join in. This is my first laptop so let's see how much I fucked up.
Samsung Notebook 9 Pro 15"
i7, 16gb ddr4, 256gb ssd, rx540 dgpu
Pro:
> keyboard is really good surprisingly, feels sharp(?) for me and good layout
> comes with s pen integrated into the body. (digital art so useful). Surprisingly useful when taking bio lecture notes
> includes rx540 dgpu so I can gayme in it, plus helps with some programs.
> can (optionally) charge with USB type c, so I can bring only one charger for my phone and laptop when I go to school.
> battery life pretty decent, last me the school day so sometimes I don't need to bring a charger.
> thin enough (.7"~) that it feels thin but still has heft.
> 2-in-1 meme isn't totally a meme. Other than drawing, using the touch screen to scroll and tent/presentation stuff is pretty cool for watching videos while laying down or with other shit crowding up desk space
> 15" is a sweetspot for screen real-estate but not a big laptop
Cons:
> I missed out on the 8th gen. Just three months after buying this exact same model with a quad core processor takes its place.
> literally nobody cares about this laptop so no skins or accessories like a compatible/alternative pen.
> included s pen is too short for long drawing sessions. Bought straelder or whatever alternative pen for it but loses the ONLY button for erasing so I deal with it.
> cpu area can get uncomfortably warm if I push it.
> battery life can be hit or miss.
> s pen isn't perfect. It isn't completely compatible with all programs like SAI.
> Samsung apps are annoying sometimes and I don't use them anyways.
> speakers are bottom facing and not super loud.
> screen is super reflective but that's touch screens for you.
> USB-c isn't thunderbolt but instead only able to charge?
XPS 15 9560
Pros:
>Small frame and weight
>Great build quality
>Gorgeous Display
>Decent 525GB Samsung SSD
>Good port selection
>Unironic 12 hours of battery no problem
>i7 7700hq with GTX 1050
>Paid only 950$ slightly used but in perfect condition.
Cons:
>Shit speakers
>Shit webcam
>Shit keyboard but meh I'm not a typebeast
>Shit temps, had to repaste it with liquid metal >and add some thermal pads to make it run under 70ºC on stress tests
>Slight coal whine but honestly my fault for being so careless when repasting.
>No option for an HDD drive unless i give up on my 95W-H battery (which sucks because I'm a media hoarder but what can you really do with an ultrabook form factor?)
>No pen support which the homologous x360 and Yoga 720 provide which would come real handy for a media producer.
>SHIT SHIT SHIT wifi card
>Only 2 lanes PCI-e lanes for the thunderbolt port
>New model that fixes every single one of my complains just came out
I'll keep my physical escape and power keys thanks
Surface Pro 2017
Pros:
>delicious screen with 3:2 aspect ratio
>decent battery life
>super comfortable keyboard
>solid build quality
>being able to take it off the keyboard and stand it up for watching movies in bed
Cons:
>unrepairable if broken
>has a high rate of failure
>is actually a bit heavier than you'd expect
>no USB-C/Thunderbolt
i just gave my mom my 2013 MBA and picked up a max spec 2015 one. "max spec" equates to "slightly better cpu" but i couldn't be happier. i had a 2015 13" rMBP for a week before returning it. the MBA is the godking of light and comfy.
yeah there is lol
Samsung Chromebook Pro:
>High Resolution Meme Ratio (3:2 3200x1600)
>Stylus support (pen included and slots inside a la Galaxy Note 7)
>Relatively lightweight
>Can be charged from either USB-C port on the left side or the right, which is great depending on where the charger is plugged into
>USB C charging combined with the weak m3 processor means you can charge with external battery packs ezpz
Cons:
>OOTB resolution is scaled 2x to a very small feeling 1200x800 (I have it set to 1500x1200, pretty comfy while still allowing lots of space.)
>No backlit keyboard
>Keyboard is cramped because of small screen size, especially terrible are the backspace and the tab keys which have both been shrunk in size by more than 50%
>Like most 2-in-1s there's a good amuont of wobble when using the touchscreen
>Only USB is two USB-C ports, meaning that you'll need a dongle if you want to use legacy devices
Other:
>It's a chromebook. Don't buy a Chromebook if it's not for you.
>Can natively use android apps and that's pretty cool (I have had none of the issue intially felt when the x86 m3 Chromebook Pro was released.)
MSI GL62M 7RD 077
Pros:
>stupid fast ssd
>pretty good price to performance for laptop($700 for gtx 1050 and i5 7300hq /w 8gb ram)
>long warranty
>High end TN panel(1080p screen with supposedly 94% color accuracy)
>good keyboard
>SIX COPPER HEAT PIPES and two fans
>Cool when gaming(gpu is 60-70 celcius on load)
Cons:
>less than average battery life(4-5 hours)
>fans can get a tiny bit loud when gaming (just edit fan curves if you want it quieter)
>5.3 pounds and an inch thick(not a con for me as I can carry it just fine, but if you want a 3 pound .5 inch thick laptop, this is not for you
>meh trackpad
>ok build quality
