/tpg/ - ThinkPad General

Old one turned into a cancerfest. Fuck you, idab namefaggot. Go away.

Old Thread: If you're looking for purchase advice, state your budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
>>Don't buy anything OTHER THAN IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad T, X, and W/P Series if you want the Real Business Experience™
>>Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

Recommended IBM models:
>600 series, IPS T4x or 755 series
Recommended modern models:
>X220 - 12", 768p, cheap and light
>T420 - 14", 900p, widely available, socketed CPU, Ivy Bridge installable w/ Coreboot
>W520 - 15", 1080p, Desktop Replacement, 32GB RAM on quadcore models, USB 3.0
>T440p, T540p, W540 - last ThinkPads to have replaceable CPUs, IPS displays available, chiclet
>P series - reminiscent to old build quality, top-of-the-line specs, better than most current mobile workstations, but very expensive.

thinkpad pricing getting too absurd for me. let's note aka japanese thinkpad time.

check that i/o...

>that keyboard
>no tracknipple
Fuck off.

>implying your not a brainlet

>implying your shitty craptop is as cheap or durable as a ThickBad
It's more like a Let's Not, you fucking weeaboo.

the worst thing about let's notes is the absolutely abysmal fit and finish
it looks much less expensive than it really is, and that's not a positive when the lowest end model costs upward of 130,000 in anime bucks

the lower end used ones are actually cheaper than the equivalent thinkpads in japan.

the build quality is definitely worse, and no trackpoint is shit, but the screen res is better at least.

Anyone here with a T460s - if so any thoughts?

Wanted an upgrade for my x230 and was looking at the x series for size, but it's impossible for me to find a used x series around me that has a higher resolution screen. T460s is like the same price as an x260 here, and I didn't want a T series because of size and weight, but it's like 0.04lbs heavier than my x230.

>gibs me dat
No.

age

How do I replace the cells in the lelnovo byttery?

You have to very carefully cut the battery open. There are some guides out there.

I bought a T430 with an i7 and it's probably the best purchase i've ever made.

I think it was around $300 too.

X250 with 52 days warranty left. 5300u, 8GB RAM, 240GB SSD

Was planning on bidding up to $400. Is the warranty worth it?

My T530 has an i7, and I got it for $100. Been Thinking about flipping it, but it is so goddamn comfy.

>Want Tbolt 3 for external GPU
>Don't want to shell out $1800 for a decent t470
I like my 430, should I just do the Express card eGPU meme for like 50$ and just hold off

EC/MiniPCI eGPU is fine if you have external monitor

It grew on you. Swap the keyboard if you can and enjoy your /comfy/pad

Mostly just for a LAN setup, Overwatch and Dota2 would be the main ones. (I doubt PUBG would run lmao)
I just have a 780 lying around and wanted to put it to use.

It'll be fine for DotA and OW

Yeah I've just heard mixed things about the bandwidth overhead. So I wanted an opinion

Use an external monitor, that mitigates most of the bandwidth issues.

I finally replaced hinge in T400. good as new. now to install XP/POS to run Sim city and AoE

next up is installing wifi card in X220 and installing High Sierra.

>installing high sierra
ISHYGDDT

How well does hackintosh run on the W520?

Poorly. Install a Linux distro (preferably one that isn't slaved to the GNU GPL) and go on your day.

I got my i7 t430 for $180USD, no hdd but i had a spare one anyways
honestly my only complaint is that the main hard drive bay is about 2 or 3 millimetres too short to fit my 1tb mechanical, but I was planning on buying an ultrabay sata adapter anyways

take the bracket off, should fit snugly without it if its 9mm thicc

amazon.com/Thinkpad-T430-LED-backlit-Certified-Refurbished/dp/B0733H5YZY/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1516260517&sr=1-1&keywords=thinkpad

Is this a shitty deal?
Need a durable laptop for school and League

It's not a great deal. Just find one on eBay. "Refurbished" is just marketing bullshit. The thinkpads on Amazon and New Egg come from the same place as thinkpads on eBay.

You should be looking at spending 150-170 for such a laptop. DDR3 is $20 for a 4gb stick, throw one in yourself if the unit you're looking at doesn't have enough.

If you really want a bargain, I think the t440 or t440p is the best value right now. You can get one for $200 in good condition. If you want one for cheap that has a FHD screen, buy one that has a broken screen and buy the screen separately. You can pick up a AUO B140HAN01.2 for 40-60 dollars, and the t440 for 130-140.

Why are T61 and T400 holding their value?

New to Thinkpads but I remembered my friend having one growing up.
If I was to take notes in class on one, would the fan bet obnoxiously loud?

How is the graphics card on a t440p?
thanks for the response

There's a minimum threshold for a modern computer that works. Even old Asus computers that function go for 40-60 dollars.

Fan noise isn't an issue. If you use an SSD, the entire rig will be near silent, even under load. I have a t520 with a brand new SSHD in the ultrabay and it's at least 4x as loud as the fan.
There is a noticeable jump in GPU power between the t420 and the t430. The jump between the t430 and t440 is slightly less, though it is an increase. The t440p has a rather rare variant that has a GT 730m in it. Even the model with only integrated graphics is a great buy for $200. The keyboard is the chiclet one that everyone shits on, and there's no way to swap in an older version. The trackpad is unusable as well. I use the trackpoint, so its not an issue. If you do need a trackpad, it's worth the $15 dollars and hour of your time it takes to replace it with a t450 trackpad.

taskhost is using up a lot of cpu

Did you update Superfish yet?

Thanks again user for the response.

I found this
ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T440p-240GB-SSD-Intel-Core-i7-4600M-2-9GHz-8GB-Laptop/122920011734?epid=206993787&hash=item1c9e9a87d6:g:CecAAOSwEW9aX8os
But I dont like that it doesnt come with a charger but other then that it seems pretty clean

Seems like a good deal. You can buy a used charger for $11. I wouldn't sweat it. Don't forget to budget 30-40 dollars towards replacing the battery.

Sweet thanks user, think I'll go with this

hopefully I'm not too much of a brainlet to figure out how to switch it out

The t440p doesn't have the ridiculous internal+external battery setup. Swapping in a new battery is as easy as flipping a release switch on the bottom.

Also, when you purchase a charger, make sure to get a genuine charger. Those chink chargers are prone to melting and they're only a few dollars cheaper than a used genuine charger.

Snagged a T530 w/ 8GB RAM, 1600x900 panel, 9 cell battery, and dock for around $200 a while back. Also threw in an SSD.

Getting Linux to play nice with Optimus is proving quite challenging and generally means tearing.

so is this what I need for a battery?
battdepot.com/us/model/notebook battery/lenovo/thinkpad t440 70046/lln241.aspx

any estimation on how long the battery life on those are?

The t440p is the worse of the line for battery life. It's geared to sacrafice battery life for performance. With that 6 cell you linked, you could expect 4-5 hours. the 9 cell offers 7-9 hours.

That battery you linked is the wrong one. It's for a t440. eBay is probably going to be cheaper. I would wait until your laptop comes it before you buy a new battery. Check out the battery that comes with it, then buy a replacement if it isn't up to par.

I'm looking for a laptop/tablet x230t type device for reading textbooks and taking notes in class.

I've been looking at a few different x2*0t models on eBay and offer up, but haven't had much luck.

My budget is around $500.

what problem are you having? He's a x230t in good shape with a new battery for 200 burgers. Throw another 4gb stick of ddr3 for $20 and you'll be fine.

ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X230t-12-5in-320GB-HD-i5-2-6GHz-4GB-RAM-3/162845549633?epid=140723488&hash=item25ea59e441:g:P38AAOSwf15aVuBH

Are there no better devices than the x230t in that price range for what I'm looking for?

I don't know that market very well. An x220t is roughly the same price, and there is no tablet for the x*40 series. Maybe look at a dedicated tablet for taking notes.

What's a good laptop briefcase/bag for my T460? Preferably professional-looking.

what is that?

damn, I,ve broken intern in my x60s.
screen replacement costs more than "new laptop"
RRREEEEEEEEEE

Don't solder the new cells to the battery. Soldering takes long enough that the heat transfer is greater than if you spot-welded. It damages the cells.

Why are X1's so cheap on ebay?

Are they as durable as other Thinkpads?

>Why are X1's so cheap on ebay?
Not really. Gen1 have a TN, and a 8GB of a soldered RAM at best.

Looking to buy
newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4GH62K2764&cm_re=Lenovo_Thinkpad_X1-_-9SIA4GH62K2764-_-Product

What are the down sides?

>newegg
Just buy it on eBay. You're paying a 150 premium for no reason. Why don't you idiots at least read the fucking sticky?

Thanks user but are these as durable as other Thinkpads?

If it's anything like the T25, there'll be fuck-all ports on the other side though

We're all hoarders here

>1440 x 900 is 16:10 ???
Obviously - 1600x900 would be 16:9, so 1440x900 must be narrower than 16:9
Plenking and multiple exclamation marks make you look tarded in English btw

They're a bit thinner, but they seem to hold up fine.

X220 and X230 intake cool air from the bottom and exhaust through the left side and rear. But the bottom air intake looks so restrictive, there are only a few tiny slots and even then they have some filter material on them that further restricts airflow.

Has anyone so far tried cutting out a large portion of the area below the fan to improve airflow and temps?

Pic related.

Ok I will just ask:

> 1.
I have a t440p, is it worth to unlock the advanced menu ? What settings did you change in the Menu ?
> 2.
I just bought a 170 Watt AC adapter because it was cheaper than the 135 Watt AC adapter. Can I already benefit from the 170 Watts or do I need to change / modify something ?
> 3.
Whats a TouchPad Sticker ?
> 4.
What are possible mods you are aware of, but you didn't do (or not listed) ?
> 5.
Not a real question but I want to unlock AES-NI as well, do you have some advise to do so ?
> 6.
How hot and loud does it get ? How is the battery life ?
> 7. I thought about replacing the mobile broadband modem with a PCIe M.2 to PCIe Adapter and then put a PCIe Card into the Ultraybay.
But what Card? A USB Type C 3.1 Card ? Thunderbolt ? Expresscard ?
I thought you are maybe interested in this idea.

I want to upgrade from my x230, thinkpad or not, while spending around $700 and essentially all I want is slightly better performance and a higher res screen

Is a newer T series the best option? There's a decent t460s for sale near me but I hear the trackpoint on that is shit. And no used new X series ever have above the minimum trash screen res so that's out of the question.

>watching animu on my bed

My Thinkpad came with Windows 10 Enterprise edition installed, should I downgrade to Windows 7?

yes

you could try an x1 carbon
the keyboard's kind of shit, but they're light and have decent screens

I need XP drivers for a T400. currently can't get it to connect to wifi.

HNNNNNNNNNG. Got any more?

>should I downgrade
why

Is there anything the t420 can do that the t430 can't? Is there a point to get a 420 when the 430 exists?

Is it really necessary to turn off my thinkpad x220 and take out the battery to disconnect and reconnect the screen?

>Turn off
Yes, unless you want something sparking and fucking up your screen
>Disconnect battery
Not really. It's just a failsafe. In case something fucks up.

>calls someone else a liker of japanese things

not even him, but are you ok there mate?

Ok, thanks for the info

By the way, is this normal on a x220? This cable going outside of the screen section.
