The reason is that China is a massive country, whose influence almost rivals that of the US. They're buying up land and companies everywhere. They are pretty much taking over Africa right now.
And the developed parts of China are extremely impressive and a lot more advanced in every way than European cities. Their total GDP is going to be the largest in the world soon, and they produce so much cool shit! Not only is pretty much everything with a western brand built and assembled in China, they have a lot of their own brands now. And that stuff is high quality at a decent price. Huawei, Lenovo, Volvo, etc.
It's just an incredibly fascinating country. It's the up-and-coming great power. They still have a ways to go, but they are getting there.

I liked this one. Chinese movies tend to be either extremely sophisticated (Raise the Red Lantern, To Live, Yi Yi, etc.) or extremely crude. (Hero, Red Cliff, etc.)
But this one is just a fun and enjoyable little movie.
Chinese cinema is actually pretty good. There's a lot out there, it's just hard to get hold of without resorting to illegal means. Which is why I haven't watched a lot of it.
I can recommend "To Live" and "A Touch of Sin", too.
