>How a confused, defensive social media giant steered itself into a disaster, and how Mark Zuckerberg is trying to fix it all.
Entertaining wall of text about facebook and its (mis)handling of news. Now i get why the EU is trying to pass link tax law to help online news sites.
> facebook launches news division > censors non left articles, spies on own employees > gets threats from murdoch > adventurous clickbait outlets post fake news, facebook now comitted to delete fake news
How can we promote open news aggregation platforms Sup Forums ? Why do normies use social media when stuff like RSS exists ?
Normies don't know that RSS exists. It also doesn't have the whole like, comment and other social signaling shit that normies adore built in. Nice digits btw.
Adrian Morris
fuck facebook, fuck zuckerkike, and fuck normies
Alexander Foster
still dont know what rss is and how it works tbqhwy

> and also where Macedonian teenagers could connect with voters in America, and operatives in Saint Petersburg could connect with audiences of their own choosing in a way that no one at the company had ever seen before. god wired is such a soy company now. how the mighty have fallen
Joshua Miller
> doesn't have the whole like, comment and other social signaling shit You still can post links and comment on them to social signal, finding the links on a closed platforms to begin with is the problem Normies are obviouly clueless about this and probably wouldn't mind being brainwashed however their platform of choice decides if it saves them a couple clicks, but this fucks even us as big publishing companies like fb now get to decide what news the majority of the population gets to read.
We need open platforms to be more prominent.
Kayden Thomas
Exactly. The problem is relying on aggregation systems that are either user driven or sponsor driven. With RSS you can just combine all new articles and choose for yourself which ones are the most important.
I think the best way to organize RSS feeds are by parent company. They don't want you goys to know you can do it this way.
Dominic Harris
> Outlets like Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal depended on paywalls to make money, but Instant Articles banned paywalls; Zuckerberg disapproved of them. After all, he would often ask, how exactly do walls and toll booths make the world more open and connected? This from the gigakike who blocks off whole swaths of the internet if you block his IPs
Colton Johnson
How does rss fix the problem if all the feed sources have gone to shit?
Brayden Flores
> Executives remember panic the first few days, with the leadership team scurrying back and forth between Zuckerberg’s conference room (called the Aquarium) and Sandberg’s (called Only Good News), trying to figure out what had just happened and whether they would be blamed lol its like a fucking ministry of truth.
Isaac Cruz
god damn that article was faggy, never once did they mention that fucking fake news was invented as an excuse for why hillary lost

Isnt an RSS feed just like being in a botnet?

i like how young alpha kike gets bullied by older yet still stronger at least for a while kike for its share of goyim mindshare territory

An rss feed is a xml document

What's some good rss software that's cross platform (web/androis
What do you mean by parent company
Ryan Hall
well for starters, RSS resides in the alphabet spaghetti realm, so that's like 98% of the market gone.
Ian Moore
>RSS resides in the alphabet spaghetti realm wot u m8
Carter Nguyen
he means alphabet as in non marketable technology names not as in google's parent company
Gabriel Roberts
>What's some good rss software that's cross platform (web/androis I like tt-rss because it's self hosted, otherwise you can go for botnet solutions like feedly if you don't mind being data mined
Colton Rivera
Thanks - am reading about it now

tt-rss and its android app newsbeuter in the terminal
Michael Nelson
How many feeds you subscribe to?
Easton Morales
i curate it with my interests, plus I sub youtubers. I have about 200
Henry Lewis
It's highly ironic isn't it
Isaiah Miller
Feedbin. You can host your own server, and then use any number of consumer apps to get it on your device
I use press on Android
Ayden Reyes
RSS really is the way to go. You get the freedom to choose you own news providers, although some sites tend to spam a lot and don't offer any automatic filtering options.
The major problem with RSS in my opinion is the lack of well-designed standalone desktop applications. You either get some cloud-hosted solution, an ugly local program or you have to host your own server to access via a browser. Obviously, that's not as user-friendly a solution as just opening Facebook and scrolling down.
I myself mostly used Facebook as a news aggregator. It worked fine, even though they filtered a lot of stuff. Since Zuckerberg's recent revelation, however, my nice news wall turned into skiing pictures, baby pictures, idiotic posts from some gaming pages and nothing more. All of the news just disappeared.
Asher Rogers
good analogy lol
Lucas Bell
Spidr.today is pretty good if you want to catch up to the news of the day fast.

Where can I buy a pair of RSS panties?

Leftists are by default lying, since they always avoid the truth.

While RSS was always going to be a niche technology, you shouldn't blame normies for the decline in it's usage. It's Google's fault with their Embrace, Extend, Extinguish strategy. It's exactly what they're trying to do now to adblockers, with their built in Chrome ad """""blocker"""".
Andrew Brown
>Embrace, Extend, Extinguish strategy. You just opened my eyes user Holy shit this all makes sense now ...
Mason Harris
>How can we promote open news aggregation platforms Sup Forums ? >Why do normies use social media when stuff like RSS exists ?
Because of their egos.
Brayden Cooper
the Chromes adblocker is more about killing competition to adsense, not killing adblockers
Grayson Sullivan
I wanna post this over those cave signs.

I haven't log into facebook since the days it was a platform to find old friends from college. Should I log in to see how has it changed or do I save myself the time and chance to get cancer and don't bother?
Cameron Rodriguez
Don't do it.
Thomas Perez
I did it out of curiosity. It is just a news feed and it keeps suggesting me to make friends with people I don't know. I still do not see why people use this site so much.
Adrian Long
nigga what
Christopher Cook
>I still do not see why people use this site so much They don't, teenagers use instagram/snapchat/whatsapp/fb messenger and people in their 20s have moved to those and don't log on anymore. Only boomers use FB daily, all of my mom's friends waste their time there and she's told them like a dozen times to fuck off cause whatsapp is enough facebook botnet for one person.
Brody Murphy

Since the topic or RSS came up multiple times in this thread, I wanna dump YouTube and juts setup RSS with mpv. Is there some sort of guide to doing so on Linux?
Gabriel Scott
its going to be hilarious once that EU bill comes in. imagine how many database issues/bugs are going to occur when they have to permantly remove data or face a 20m fine per case.
Thomas King
>I wanna dump YouTube and juts setup RSS with mpv That's what I use. There is two ways to get an rss feed out of youtube, either uid or username, ex. Here is starting strengths youtube sub url. youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?user=AasgaardCo [\code] you change what is after the ?user= to the name of the channel
I also have a script in newsbeuter that calls mpv when the feed comes in macro y set browser "mpv %u"; open-in-browser ; set browser "firefox %u" [\code] So I just hit ",""y" and mpv plays the video.
Oliver Russell
Supporting RSS is the opposite of supporting good journalism. That's just a selfish desire to get news for free in a format you chose. If you want to support good journalism then get out your wallet.
Jason Turner
Most RSS aggregators suppport basic authentication, so you could in theory pay news sites to access paywalled stuff and still gather articles centraly
