All I want is a clamshell 4g device with a physical keyboard and good web browsing capability. Why the fuck does this cost so much.

>Why the fuck does this cost so much.
-developers are dumbfucks
-isn't mass produced
You cannot sell freetard hardware with applel pricing.
STOP SHILLING THIS PIECE OF SHIT
Yeah it's a disaster.
Good question though, why aren't there qwerty keyboard clamshell android smartphones? I'd buy one in an instant.
just use a gpd win with a 4g dongle
Not very portable. The idea is to replace my smartphone entirely with a tiny laptop that goes in my pocket.
>Why the fuck does this cost so much
Because only a few people actually want a device like that as most people are fine with a smartphone or tablet and because of that there is no real reason to mass produce it.
Take a look the GPD devices even there spendy for what they are and is purely chinese made and it's all because there a niche product
>4G device
Why the fuck would you pay extra for botnet?
...
Wait for chinese clones.
Because economy of scale is a thing, stupid goy.
>linux distro with no games
>gamepad
pick one
Might as well pick a 7" smartphone with a bluetooth keyboard/gamepad over this
by something that isnt a complete piece of shit you fucking retard
GTFO with your chink device,
burn em with their shitty design flaws
Doesn't change the question. Why would anyone use SIM cards in 2018? You do realize your ISP can remotely execute code on your device and wiretap you whenever they want?
There were phones with qwerty keyboards user. Back in 2008. They weren't very good to carry around since the entire numpad had to be included along with the keyboard and the screen itself
pyra is Austrian
and it's fucking trash
the better alternative is the gpd win 2 or the upcoming pocket 2, which ARE, in fact, chink devices. You just gotta make the difference in your mind that Hong Kong is a westernized good part, and Shenzhen is right on the border of Hong Kong, so it's basically the same culture just with the benefit of Chinese slave labor
>The idea is to replace my smartphone entirely
No. Doesn't work.
>Wait for
uhhhh, living under a rock?
Win 2 seems fine, but it's just overpriced by 15%. If it were sold for 150$ less just without windows I'd buy it.
IT'S OBSOLETE
> 5 screen
> Desktop Linux
> good web browsing capability
>Replacing my phone with a tiny laptop on my pocket.
That's a really good way to commit social suicide.
This thing looks like a retarded DS. Get a smartphone and a slimtype keyboard cover or equivalent.
literally a ds
Have you heard of the Planet Gemini PDA? It's the size of a large smartphone and has a full keyboard. Some good videos on YouTube about it youtube.com
Gemini PDA? Price went up a few days ago, though.
>ARM
>R
>M
Thanks man, that's pretty awesome. I'm all over this.
Nothing wrong with it, just wish they'd use something more powerful than whats on a raspberry pi 3.
They just need to make it more ruggerised/more able to be thrown in a pocket without it getting fucked up.
>You cannot sell freetard hardware with applel pricing
You can, but it has to be good. I mean I bought a Talos II workstation, since it's marketed towards professionals and enthusiasts, not retarded numales that only care about "muh gamez". That Pyra thing is a failed abortion of a handheld device that can't decide if it's supposed to be a laptop, a game controller, or a glossy brick. The game controls are honestly the worst part. What do you do with them when it's running Linux? Play Ninja Turtles in a GBA emulator like a soyboy or try to use Tux Cart Racing on the damn thing? Absurdly retarded. Absolutely incredible how gaymurs manage to ruin even freetard hardware.
You do not want that. Nintendo patented the clamshell hinge design so the hinge on these is SHIT and locks very poorly.
t. Pandora #644 owner that waited 4 years to get this piece of shit only for the LCD cable to fail after 10 hours of use.
Wtf. Then what u are left with
raspberry pi zero + small keyboard + aliexpress display + glue = 50eur
it'll probably function better anyway
Get a fucking Psion Gemini (on the left).
Fuck German autists who can't deliver.
It's been done.
WiFi + portable 4G router.
wow i will be definetly buying this if the reviews are decent when it launches. reminds me of my old hp jornada 720 and i loved that form factor
+VPN
Are you a fucking 10 year old or something who thinks this is cool and le nerdy? Its expensive because its a very niche autistic thing that has a high barrier of cost to produce for startup shed tier companies who bother to pander to you losers.
I thank god that I'm not a sperg, normal life must be painful for them.
nice ironic post ending

What aspect ratio is this
Pretty sure you can run a full Linux distro on any Android phone. If you want a key board get blackberry passport or something like that.
this. it's already in production and everyone who backed it is supposed to get theirs before the end of april. fucking shame for anyone who missed out on this thing when it was $200 off.
looks nice but there has to be a catch
also pic related, anyone own this bad boy back in the day?
dude just get a smartphone. its way better and less expensive.
holy shit Sup Forums is dumb. lol.
all you need is a otg hub for hdmi to plug into your tv and charge at the same time.
Pointless
Any idea what the price range will be?
No you can't. Most of the hardware won't be properly supported.
The Pyra uses an OMAP, which has decent Linux support.
(although I'm guessing they're mostly using fairly expensive OMAPs because it's one of the SoCs that gets sold in low volumes)
I'm so angry that they made this stupid thing.
You stupid bitches, just make it horizontal and put a qwerty keyboard on it.
Main motivation, at least for the older Pandora model, was to create a portable device that could fully emulate Amiga games. Therefore it needs a keyboard and a joystick.
Legit, this is what I want. Especially if it was inexpensive and had a replaceable battery. I'm done with bezelless "design award of the year" aircraft unobtanium $1000 smartphones.
I use my smartphone for:
Porn
Web browser
WhatsApp
Facebook
Email
Calla
Google Maps
YouTube
That's it. That is literally it.
'Smart' phones are the mid 2010s netbooks that are smaller and more retarded.
Nintendo DS on steroids
500$
too much. I bet you can't remove the battery either.
It was 200$ cheaper not more than a week ago. It was 300$ for a whole year, your fault for not getting it while it's hot.
>can't remove the battery
You can always remove batteries in any device. But yes, they aren't easily replaceable on this unit.
Shit, i bought into the hype 10 years ago as a teenager, and when several years had passed i gave up on it. It was outdated when it finally was readily available, and now you're saying they made an upgrade, dear lord.
How old is this Pyra thing? (wiki doesn't say) shouldn't they just have used Raspberry Pi compute modules for their "upgradeable flexibility"? It's not really an efficient path, to develop a new board for under 10k machines, without guarantee they'll all buy a new board.
>"that's it, that's literally it"
>as if that's not already a shit load
>How old is this Pyra thing
4 years
>shouldn't they just have used Raspberry Pi compute modules for their "upgradeable flexibility"?
No
Thanks for the info.
And, why not? Why would you need 4gigs of RAM in that thing? I fell for a "raspberry pi killer" board, with a proprietary GPU and more RAM than i could use... yay.
Hold on, i'm gonna look a few things up and might kickstart something better. We'll see.
It's confirmed that you can open it up easily and replace the battery; however you void your warranty by doing so.
Moto Z Play/Force with keyboard mod
It's completely open source, unlike rPi "killers". The community would properly optimize the device. Look at the old one. This is why odroid scores better in benchmarks than rPi, but is worse irl since it's significantly less popular and it's community and devs don't give enough shit.
And yes, 2GB wouldn't be enough. 4GB opens it for more possibilities and a non-laggy desktop. I have an rPi 3, it's very sluggish when browsing and multitasking. rPi isn't made for desktop use or gaming in mind. The point of pyra is to be a portable desktop + gaming device or whatever you need it to be. Similar to GPD Win 2 except without windows (and twice as less RAM, storage and computing power). If you like the idea of Pyra but don't like Pyra itself then you can buy GPD WIN 2. It costs just as much but it'snmore than twice as powerful. And it will probably come out sooner. The pre-released builds are shown to run Linux just fine out of the box (with the exception of the touch screen which needs a script to adjust). It will also be compatible with android soon after release.
>925 USD / 745 EUR
>Why the fuck does this cost so much.
Admittedly, discoverability is shit, but what can ya do when using forums without having a "dev highlights" page:
pyra-handheld.com
Skim the actual post before criticizing based on my shitty summary:
>1. Development of the PCBs
>Designing the PCBs has cost 75,095.89 EUR so far.
>Not included are the costs for the produced prototypes (which is another whopping 52,639.32 EUR).
>Total so far: 127,735.21 EUR.
>2. Development of the Cases
>The costs for the cases take the second place: 61,920.00 EUR
>That's actually quite cheap (I've checked with some companies in Germany and their offers were about 180,000.00 EUR and higher).
>The downside of course is that things weren't going as smooth as I had wished and it took quite a long time.
>But well, the price difference was worth it... we could've never afforded it for 180,000.00 EUR!
>Still, once the Pyra sells well, I want to work on improving the case. Making it thinner. And of course I'll sell in the shop as well, so everyone can upgrade if he/she wants to.
>Total so far: 189,655.21 EUR
>3. Development of the keyboard
>Third place goes to the development costs for the keymat (design, molds, changes, samples): 19,220.00 EUR
>Total so far: 208,875.21 EUR
>4. Development of the LCDs
>Next up: Development costs for the LCDs: 9,371.25 EUR
>Development costs? Weren't those existing LCDs?
>Well, yes. Except for that they had no touchscreen.
>So custom touchscreens had to me made. We needed to test various ones and they needed their own tools to fit perfectly on the LCD.
>And of course we also needed samples of the LCDs
>Total: 218,246.46 EUR
>Yep, those are the final costs so far... with 1000 preorders, 218.25 EUR of each unit are just being used to cover the DEVELOPMENT costs.
>If we had 10,000 preorders, the development costs per unit would break down to 21.83 EUR.
(cont'd)
>I hope this shows the reasons some things move slow. Sure, we could've increased the development speed by creating multiple molds in parallel for tests or pay express costs - but development costs are already pretty high.
>Increasing it just to get it done faster sadly isn't really possible (unless you find someone who would like to donate 100.000 EUR or higher
>No wage for me is included, as I don't really get anything.
>For those who want to know: I'm getting paid by my company (OpenPandora GmbH) which basically consists of the shop and some development and productions (Retrode, Pyra, etc.).
>My wage is the allowed minimum for my position (CEO), which is 800 EUR per month (though thanks to taxes, I only get 642 EUR per month paid out).
>Based on the average time I work on the Pyra and the shop, my wage would be about 2,40 EUR per hour... and I also have to pay insurances, social system fees, etc.
>It's pretty clear that I can't live from that, that's why I also have my other main job (TV productions).
>That hopefully also explains why I can't work 24/7 on the Pyra and sometimes I am late with news or some tests I need to do.
>But right now, I want to keep as much of the profit of the shop ready for the Pyra
>Fuck German autists who can't deliver.
you realize that said German autists took OpenPandora from the non-German cunt who was massively failing to deliver and actually turned the project around?
>it'll probably function better anyway
about a good comparison as
>fakeduino for like 5 bucks
>it'll probably function better than a rasPi anyway
>GPD Win 2

Very interesting

I'll skip supporting Jewtel and their business practices with my wallet if I can avoid it.
I feel the same about Microsoft which is why I won't buy the device.
Expensive as shit.
Goddamn it.

looks like active cooling, another pass (unless it can work in force-passive+throttle-when-needed mode under linux)
would buy if it was at least 10" but that thing is just too small to be useful and also too expensive.
Reminder that pic related is what we had before iPhone came.
>good web browsing capability.
buy a modern smartphone you fagget
You can run GNU in Android so that original Android still handles hardware.
whiteboard.ping.se
Have you used phones with horizontal keyboard and with vertical keyboard? I've used both and don't get why people want horizontal keyboard (especially after trying out Blackberry's keyboard). I think that the perfect keyboard would be about 8cm wide. Make it wider and your thumbs cover less keys and keys themselves are unnecessarily big.
This kills the circlejerk
Implying I'm stupid enough to use phones for any comms needing security instead of a liberated Thinkpad.
>active cooling
Oh god. All other m3 computers use vapor chambers, why couldn't this as well. With a fan you know the heat sink won't be big so passive cooling is impossible, unless you remove the fan and mod a big ass aftermarket heat sink.
Talosanon, how about a review after you've had it a while? That's the only interesting device ITT and few of the rest of us know much about them.
WOW OP THAT'S AWESOME
I'm gonna install Fedora Linux on mine LMAO cuz i wear one too. And I can emulate my favorite FOSS games. Everyone at school is gonn abe playing on their nintendo switches but I'll have this sweet bad boy to look at BLACKED.com AND play retro games. Fucking EPIC.
The modem doesn't have DMA so it's a lot better than having a Qualcomm device
>last time they never sent people that bought it the device
>maybe they will this time
Overpriced garbage is LATE now that literally there is a much cheaper overpriced android option, the windows one aside.
>Unironically wanting to buy this piece of shit
Kys.
>game controls
>on a linux device
funny
>upcoming pocket 2
am I missing something? I thought this was just a rumor.
the guy who runs that company has run another UMPC vaporware company not even 2 years ago and he disappeared with everyones money and never delivered a product lol read the comments on any youtube video about this product. dude is a known conman scammer and this device will never come out.l
Seems like a foregone conclusion to me that there'll be a pocket 2.
they're pushing the 2nd gen of their successful devices. WIN 2, XD+, and /possibly/ Pocket 2. There's no reason not to make pocket 2, they're literally swimming in customers. But I also doubt they'd make it, since the original pocket already had 8GB RAM and plenty of storage the only thing they can upgrade without doubling the price is the CPU (and the keyboard), which won't be worth it for a lot of people. Since they're mainly targeting gamers they probably won't push a second mini-laptop when it would be identical to WIN 2 except without a gamepad.
If they do make it it will either be over 1000$ or not have any significant improvements. This means that it won't have even half the buyers the original did. People are still complaining about win2 costing too much. Pocket was more expensive than Win, so unless Pocket 2 is also priced at 650-750$ it won't be successful.
But we will see.
Why the hell is no one mentioning this
Imagine that but with this keyboard/trackpoint
That would scare away the fucking gaymerfags
Jeez i really need such device in my life
I mean it's nice but it's not durable by any means
Plus i would really prefer if it had a 720p screen
Bad keyboard, obsolete now that WIN 2 is out. Gemini is cheaper and does pretty much the same shit.
>GPD Win 2 is $649
I didn't know it was that expensive. I thought it was pretty much in the same price bracket as its predecessor. Yeah, that might not bode well for the pocket 2.
Anyways I'm pretty happy with my gpd pocket anyways.
That is the win 2
But gemini doesn't have a damn trackpoint
I love mine.
