Apple has always been at the forefront of unicode. The issue isn't with how they implement unicode, but rather with other UI elements. Like the max characters in a notification based on character width. That caused a lot of crashes back in the day. The software will get both the idea that it can display the full message and also that the message is too long for it to be displayed, so the phone just freezes or crashes.
